Thanks to all who've posted here with useful info. Just finished my first trip to CR in some 18 years. Posts: 10272-hour trip to San Jose in early October
Thanks to all who've posted here with useful info. Just finished my first trip to CR in some 18 years. The great incentive was a short-lived sale on Spirit Airlines that dropped the RT airfare all-in to $189 from some eastern airports including mine. Was also nice to get midday arrival and midday departure, so I booked a Friday-to-Monday stretch.
Spirit has the infamous baggage policy with charging for carry-ons, but they do allow a "personal item" about the size of a rucksack for no cost, so I decided to try that as my only baggage.
Immigration at the airport was quite a long line, taking some 30 minutes or so. I changed only $10 at the place with poor rates. The bus service from the stop in front of the airport worked well, with costs of only 450 colones to get downtown. Was glad to be light on the bags, though, as it turned out to be a fair walk from the bus stop to my hotel.
Had booked the Hotel Vesuvio via the entertainment.com, which uses the hotels.com engine. The all-in for 3 nights was $124, but $50 was rebatable through the special rebate deal for Entertainment members (which I know works), so the net was around $25/night. The place gets mediocre reviews on Trip Advisor, but it's just a few buildings down from the Sportsman's Lodge and in the nicer part of Barrio Amon. The walls are thin, but my room was nice enough, and the place is GF. Would rate overall a low 2-star, which means it might not be good value at $55 but is fine at $25. (One ding: They want $4/day to use the in-room safe)
An added plus is that the big building with the Jade Museum is on the walk between the Vesuvio and the Del Rey. That building has three ATMs on the outside wall, including a Bancredito one that didn't surcharge.
As for mongering, costaricablush.com was an invaluable resource, especially for poorly-signed hole-in-the-wall locals places. Went down soi 7 (oops...avenida 7) the first night and checked out Taberna VIPS. It's popular with locals and the crowd grew as the evening wore on, but if you're used to places like the Windmill Club in Pattaya or even the places in Angeles, it could come as a letdown. It reminded me more of the divy Tijuana places. Maybe half the time one girl would dance either on the bar or at a pole in the corner. The Tico guys were super-cool about everything and girls weren't putting on the pressure to buy lady drinks. Customer drinks were C1200 and up for the beers and C2500 for the canned Cuba Libres (or Bamboo, another canned rum + Coke brand).
There were maybe 7-8 girls on a Friday night, mostly in the 5-7 range with a bit of pudge factor. I did zero in on a darker-skinned one who turned out to be from Colombia. She was taller than the others and had very little body fat & said she was 19. Went to the adjoining pension, where the lady at the window collected the C11,100 fee ($22-23-ish) for a half-hour (an hour would be double). The cuarto you got was very basic and reminiscent of many places on a similar business model in Thailand.
Still, few things are finer than a horny young Latina in full flower. I did a bit of oral and she seemed to really get into it, returning the favor briefly. I could tell she was trying to stay detached and businesslike, but it didn't take much foreplay to bring out the wild, more animalistic side, and soon she was kissing on the mouth and not trying to hide enjoyment of the other activity (and I've seen the fakers). The energy level also was incredible. As often happens, my orgasm depended on hers, as the condom (mine, brought from the U.S.) reduced sensitivity enough that the extra muscle contractions ultimately made the difference after 3 positions or so. I gave her C2,000 as a "propina."
It was a great feeling to get that bit of business out of the way. With that done, I popped into some other places for research purposes. Club Krysis near the Lipstick appears to operate on a "fishbowl" model with supposedly nice rooms and the girl of your choice at $40/hour, but none of the 6-7 possibilities really appealed. Jet Set 70E was a bit like the VIPS Taberna but more downscale, albeit also friendly. Lipstick was probably the only place I went that resembled an American strip club in interior decoration. They had a 2-drink minimum, a few cute girls, but not much of a crowd. Management didn't seem happy that I just wanted to watch the (1-dancer) show rather than invite someone over and buy a lady drink. I guess the business model depends o'ermuch on that link in the chain. I finished the beers and the damage was C5,000, if memory serves.
Then I headed to the better-known Gringo Gulch places. I remembered the Key Largo from 1992 but not the Del Rey. Both had nice atmosphere and could be good places to just hang out...they remind me of L.A. Cafe in Manila ("Best bar on the planet"), only less crowded. Key Largo has the nice colonial feel, and it was great to watch the live salsa band while dolled-up freelancers paraded through the connected bars.
I did some basic touristy stuff by day, like seeing the Teatro Nacional (which they had closed on my trip 18 years ago because of earthquake damage). A guitar festival was there, and it was a great unexpected treat to see the closing concert one night. Also saw the gold museum. That area was about 15-20 minutes' walk from the Vesuvio. The Teatro cafe was nice for a light meal. Looked at the Grano de Oro restaurant but decided the C15,000 and up entrees were too rich for my budget, so as a second choice I tried the Oasis at the Santo Tomas hotel. Great vichyssoie, good tenderloin in Spanish sauce and kahlua parfait washed down with 2 Imperials at about C17,000 total damage.
Also checked out the Mercado Central and central post office during the day, including the Cafe Teando location there (some great coffee creations)
The next day I hung out a bit around the gulch places, watching football games on the TVs at Chubb's while trying the different beer brands. Tona from Nicaragua was good. Went over to the Del Rey. One of the FLs there, Laura, was good at pushing the right buttons without being too aggressive. Too many girls are too quick to hit the buy-me-drink point of the conversation, at which point if you don't they assume you're not interested, are too cheap or otherwise not a good prospect. I'm happy to let those go, as they're usually not good at the hotel.
Laura was patient and personable enough, though. Maybe a 7 on looks, big boobs, dyed blonde hair and maybe 25 or so. It was afternoon and I'd have to finish the session in time to change and go to the Teatro (which was strict about not letting latecomers be seated). She opened at $80 ST but I got it down to $50 without too much problem. Got a passing taxi that actually used the meter and got back to the hotel.
She was good in bed, not the "natural" that the Colombian was, but enthusiastic and, thankfully, also orgasmic, as again that made for a happier happy ending on my part. She was very much a pro, but in the good sense of the word, i.e. trying to apply know-how toward a better customer experience. As elsewhere in the world (Amsterdam, L.A. Cafe, soi 6 in Pattaya) the best girls are the ones that try to please the guy well enough to get repeat business, whereas the worst ones become hardened and take a more slash-and-burn approach and are always trying to land the overpaying newbie.
Was able to find the terminal and catch the bus back out to the airport. Spirit check-in was a disaster...a 60-90 minute line mostly because of arguments over the baggage policy or whether someone had already paid or not, understaffing, poor training and slow computers. My chck-in could have been done via a kiosk, but they don't have any in San Jose.
Of course there was the $26 departure tax, and the banco on the departure level has much fairer exchange rates than the ones in arrivals. Security lines also took maybe 10 minutes (some 18 years ago that was a 1-hour line). Airport food and concession prices were high even by U.S. standards. I got the impression they were trying to do the airport too much "on the cheap" by trying to sock passengers and having it pay for itself. Which sounds nice at first, except if you look at airport development around the world there's often a huge payoff for the first place in a region to "go big" on the airport (Atlanta and Singapore are examples). SJO is still quite a bit undersized to its potential, and by being so it leaves the country vulnerable to another place, like PTY, someday becoming the big regional hub. It's penny-wise and pound-foolish.
Overall I know I didn't break much new ground, but I was very pleased with the trip and would certainly do it again if I got a similar deal on the airfare and hotel.

IDEM
Very quiet bar where the girls do not approach customers. Closes at 9:30PM, at least on weekdays. High quality chicas, 10 of them for 3 mongers when I got there at 8PM. Had a very enjoyable experience with a girl with long black hair who was very motivated and sweet, paid 28,000 COL for 1 hour, well worth it, will return, there were several sexy girls. Too bad I can't remember my girl's name, starts with L...
RELAX across the street from IDEM
They close even earlier at 8:00PM, only 2 girls when I got there at 6PM, picked one and lucky me it was Jenny. Great 30 min BBBJ as reported by others, I did not expect it but she is 7 months pregnant and lactating, quite a treat. This was her last day for now, she is taking 2 months off work before coming back. Best of all she actually likes sex. I paid 18,000 for 1 hour, outstanding quality/price ratio thanks to Jenny and in spite of the not-so-nice room and stained bedsheets.
SL
Very disappointing selection both in the afternoon and evening, was attacked by a 200 lb tuna who insisted to come to my room, no way, I left as quickly as I could. To me SL has gone down, the last 3 times I went there over a 9 months period it was the same scenario in the evening.
However on the day I checked out I was shocked to see the very nice morning selection at like 9AM, including a pretty young thing who approached me while I was checking out and kissed me, saying how sorry she was that I was leaving before we had a chance to know each other. She broke my heart, I must come back!
HLH
At 6:00PM on a weekday. 3 customers, 6 average-looking (or below) girls, place was dead.
KEY LARGO
I like Key Largo for the music, but for the most part have had bad experiences there. Tonight was no exception, 2 good looking and sexy Ticas one brunette and one blonde, started chatting me, I bought them drinks thinking I should not but oh well the drinks are inexpensive. Tried to sell me a 3-some for the "special" price of 160 USD, which I politely declined even though I did not doubt this was a special (gringo) price, talked about their kids, ex husbands etc, and all the time about money. I understand that is why they are here, but it is not pleasant. After I made it clear I would not go with 2 girls today the brunette tried to get me to give her 5K for her taxi, I already bought her drinks and told her no. She said she was leaving but 30 minutes later she was still around and came to ask again. Ended up going with the blonde for 40K, she was considerably more sexy with her clothes on than without, everything was falling and mostly her p*ssy stunk big time. I had trouble getting her to take a shower but even that did not do it, she smelled of used condoms, I sent her back to the bar with her money, the smell was too much of a turnoff and not expected from the nice looking girl she was at the bar.
HDR
Way too aggressive for me, and my limited experience with HDR is the same as Key Largo, normal since for the most part the KL girls also work at HDR. Yes there are some gems, but it really takes a lot of work or luck to find them and a lot of disappointment in the meantime. I met a really good girl there once, but she knew it and when I returned a few months later she wanted $200, claimed to get $300 LOL. Anyway I would much rather return to IDEM or RELAX for sex, KL only for the music and note to self, no more single mothers.

Usual exchange rates are in the 500-550 range in USD. The Colon fluctuates a bit, so check it out the day you're going to go there. Recently it's been near the lower 500's.
