Remember that if you are in China and especially in CP to be extra cautious of your surroundings and don’t let your guard down whether you are out and about or inside your hotel room with your girl. Use your “big” head and you should have a fantastic time here in CP.

Perhaps because I am a Laowai, I am acutely aware of my "different" nature in CP but I would advise those who are ABCs to realize that they are as vulnerable as I am (or was) in many ways since the locals can immediately tell who are "real" Chinese and who are not. I too know enough Chinese to get by (most ABCs know much more than me) but I know that being paranoid is better than being trusting. My rule of thumb was

1. Stick strickly to what Big Swinging Dave or Bruce Tea tell you to do. They showed me which BBSes were safe and NEVER, NEVER go to any other. Those places might be safe but never run take the risk just in case.

2. Even if you know the Mami (Mamasan), be very leery -- VERY LEERY -- if you are led to another room that you do not know.

As for taxi scams, if the driver starts talking in quick dialect (Some backcountry hillbilly talk) and does not want to communicate in good old Putonghua, get out and get another cab. If they claim not to understand your Putonghua, get out. It worked for me.

I was more than extra cautious in CP but I had a great old time. This is why I am so grateful to people like BSD and Bruce Tea.

Hit by a bicycle on the sidewalk in Tianamein Square area at night. Came from no where. No real physical injury in this case.

CP is no Tiananein Square and the risk would be greater with lot less riders on hazadous broken sidewalks.

I was sitting in the front passenger side and the goal was to be at GZ airport.
The delay and second slow taxi ride and long ride from East GZ station resulted in a missed flight. Damage 7460 RMB. Both the cab driver took advantage of me being in a rush situation.

Reticketing at the airport before flight departure would have saved 6460 RMB instead of being sent to the wrong counter of CA and suggested to return next morning at the "Customer Service counter." The flight had departed and the duty manager was unable to help other than make a note. Morning duty manager indicated the ticket is null and void next morning. New one way ticket price 7460. The original roundtrip ticket was 4200 RMB.

Chalked as a lesson in misssing a flight !

Problem is that the guy was mongering at the the time and that is always not a good idea to admit to the LE why you got yourself in this situiation.

Similar thing happened to a buddy of mine in Shenzhen where some guys robbed him on the street saying the gal from the BBS was a girlfriend. I went back to the BBS to find the ***** a few days later and mommie said she did not work there anymore (BS) but I saw her later in the week. Got a friend of mine to take her out. Funny how a ciagarette burn to the face jogs peoples memories regarding boyfriends and phone numbers!

Thing is are you going to hunt down a pack of deadbeats and spend money to give them an asskicking. The LE isn't going to do anything about it if there is nothing in it for them.

Clarification:

Master locking taxi locks all doors and the passanger is unable to open the door under any circumstances. It had no mechanical override at the door. the knob was flush. The cab driver is in a complete heavy gage cage with just small openings for interaction and the driver is in full control of the situation. The heavy metal cage is typical of DG taxi system but not the master door override system.

A hostage situation in this particular Dongguan metered taxi cab occured.
A real danger in DG being in a master locking door taxi without an local door override. Out of all the cabs only this had an unusual door modification causing a hostage situation.

The taxi driver was identiified to the local train police. The local train police riding in the golf cart near the taxi station.

Is the bus station taxi location north or south of DG Train Station ?.

did you see my riding my bike on the streets last month? well i did not ride on a fold up bike though, it was a regular bike with no gears with pink handle bars.

one of the things that you should not be doing in cp as cars have no regard for bicyclers. no, it wasn't my idea. but i had a girl who rode around in a bike and she fell asn scraped up her knee pretty bad while on her way from her house to the dessert place to meet up with me. i felt bad so i actually had her sit in the back seat of the bike and i pedaled her back home. it was pretty intense considering the pollution from the car exhaust going into my lungs and the hot scorching sun beating on my back. not to mention that i almost got hit by a small car and a bus that coul dhave ran me over, drove only inches away from my handlebar. so here i was biking away while my girl was hugging me from behind, from pedestrian outside mall all the way to jiayi ktv area. you should have seen the expressions on the mommies faces when they saw me on a bicycle with one of their girls behind me!

i should have just paid for a taxi to drive her home, but she was worried about her bike. the things i do for these girls....

when you become old like me, you do stupid things like this to reclaim some of your youth back.

You know if I ever get caught in any type of situation, I would want Dave to come bail me out. This Canadian guy is really damn lucky that you were around and free to handle this situation. If not the situation really could have gotten really ugly. Usually consisting of a lot more beating, more money stolen and a lot more mental trauma inflicted.

I must commend you for your quick thinking. Your gamble on apprehending the girl and making the right threat at the right moment really paid off. I hope the police has apprehended the culprits involved. If they have not arrested all of them, I would recommend the Canadian guy to stay away from CP for a while to let things cool down. In China it really is the wild wild west, anything goes and anything can happen.

It's good to know that someone like Dave has got your back when you need help.

I'm happy that you're happy. A lot of the saunas are really getting quite lazy these days. It's no wonder that the top Saunas like Virgin and meiBao are doing so well- they put a lot of emphasis on service and the quality of service they provide to customers. I haven't gotten good sessions in saunas from Hui Hua, Hui Mei and New Century in recent times. However, I have to admit that Hui Hua does have some decent looking girls. I spotted a few before, but then again their service isn't all that great. I ended up liking a supervisor, the girl who brings in and introduces the girls to you. Cute girl from Jiangxi- she's not hot or beautiful per say, but she's just got this really pretty smile, straight white teeth (not always easy to find in China) and these phoenix eyes that I like. BigBoobman is the one who introduced me to her. I ended up staring at her more than the girls walking in.

Anyhow, Sauna's all about service. what's the point of getting a gorgeous girl at a Sauna, when the service is going to be bad right? I found a few more legitimate 2nd floor BBS in apartment buildings. There are some in the alleys of the Dongxing Road past Yue Hua before Swan lake Road. I followed the mama because I knew her from other shops in Yalan area. Otherwise I would never follow any new mama to unknown alleys especially at night.

She showed me 2 different BBS in an alley off Dongxing Rd, quite scary looking apartment both on 2nd FL, with monitors and cameras at the entrance door. Both places with 10 or so quite fresh looking gals. She said they recruit themselves from their home towns. I ended up taking several in a few days. Sometimes these apartment BBS mamas hang out with other Yalan mamas and try to take customers from there, because no one know them. If you see these off the track BBS mamas talking with other regular mamas, at least that's a good sign. If they are loners, that is very risky.

Be careful when offered beautiful young girls in some unknown apartments, unless you know the mamas. That is now a CP rule. In my early days hunting in CP, I had been very lucky I think following quite a few unknown mamas all over the city into many dark alleys behind steel doors, but I would never do it now. i totally agree with you. i have tried mr. ken's services and its great. always takes extra care and goes that extra mile to make sure you are safe and have a great time. i visited him just by myself and with a few people. even if he makes a little bit of money because i am just alone, he still does go out of his way to make sure that everything is good. and he even picks you up from the train station.

also, i tried the lucky hotel room 508 services that was mentioned here a few months back. they are great too and its true, they do have that all you can drink deal. it seems like they have some special agreement with the ktv's in town. the all you can deal starts at 250rmb to 320rmb depending on what you are drinking and depending on the ktv house. fuhao, tao yuan, mayflower and etc. mainly does the white wine and red wine deals. the deal with them is you pay up front when you make the booking. and you don't need to bring any money with you later during the ktv. i tried their service a few times and it was great. a few times i was alone and they hooked me up with some american guys and some taiwan guys. most spoke english.

for anyone coming in town, i would definitely recommend ken and i would hundred percent recommend david from (tao yin in chinese pinyin) lucky hotel room 508. both offers great service. i have asked david to post here many times but he hasn't yet. i have asked ken to post here as well but he hasn't either. i guess they already have a lot of business.

one thing i have noticed though is that david (130 8888 9937) from lucky hotel room 508 handles a lot of people so you get to meet alot of different people every time. most are business people from hong kong and taiwan, i think. hong kong people must be hurting with their dollar dropping everyday against rmb. no wonder they like this all you can drink deals. haha.

as for mr. bsd that is mentioned here. i have not tried his services, so i do not know if its good or not. but it seems like other people have tried it.

and last but not least, thank you guys for helping me with hotel hookup's. a while back, several of you commented on my post in helping me out with the chipper hotels in cp. it all worked out great and i had a blast in cp. already made my 8th trip since the first time. by the way, if you are thinking of staying in clipper, don't. stay in swan lake hotel instead. the rooms are exactly the same and its about a hundred rmb cheaper. (nothing wrong with clipper though, i have stayed a few times there, breakfast is good)

been a while since i posted a report here, but the experience i got definitely worth sharing! it is a long read, i am sure you guys going to enjoy it..

i am a sole traveler, although i have some chinese heritage, i cannot speak chinese at all beyon the usual "tuo sau" heck i don't even know the word for left and right, and barely remember how to say "zhi so cai na? " or something like that. okay, i actually can understand a bit more when were spoken to, but i can't easily made myself understood. also, i admit that i did not go out on leisure much and most of my experiences are done overseas with different stype of services. so bear with me as i relate my after reports.

even though i am a member here for a long time, i did not post much because i do not go out much. browsing on web sites looking for some indications on how to find leisure, i happened to the ********forum and took the initiative to contact ken. right away, under my request ken arranged for my accommodation at miraton, he sms to me the name of the hotel in chinese so i can show it to the taxi drivers (well ken did offer to send a car for me but i refuse at the time. heck i did not know him at all at the time, so how would i know if he won't send somewhere bad?)

as i arrived, i called ken and were told that he have an office in miraton, so, great. lets see him. i went down to 1st floor and sort of wandering around looking for the office, then at a likely place, i entered. inside, there are a few people in computer and a bunch of girls sitting in sofa. i am not sure what i expect but whatever it is the atmosphere is like a regular travel agent.

well anyhow, to cut the story short, ken who were waiting for me there, explained that his services are free to the punters, he get his fees from the places he booked the guests to. thats great methinks, but i admit i was a little skeptical as to what kind of services are free. being from society that believe in tanstafl, free usually means lower quality, i have my back up plan planned before i went there, i have a map of changping city with saunas lists marked just in case.

as we arrived, xiao ho took us into the side passage of some building, go upstair, go behind a fire exit, into a courtyard, walk up a couple filghts of stairs, pass through many right angled corridors and right smack into a waiting room. holly smokes!

there are a few other punters around apparently waiting for a "showing", i was offered a cola and were asked to sit for a while.

act 5 (11pm. 2am) xi aa in hotel room.

well, after i was done with the little girl in hui mei, i look into my phone and saw chinese text sms to me from xi aa so, i call her and we decide that she will came to my room at about 11pm. came she did. and without makeup on her face, which incidently i prefer her natural look more than the made up look. she came up and got on qq with the courtesy computer in my room. she shows me the pictures of her family, home and dogs. many many dogs. again she described what she wrote to her friends, and one particular guy were messanging her from taiwan talking about a visit. so on a hunch, i starts to type in english to him. well. that is hillarious! the guy is flabbergasted!

after about 30 minutes of qq she turn off the computer and say up, go to the shower with me. she wash me as i was in the sauna, doing all things as energetic as she was the day before. we do the nasties, and again i was serviced as good as i get in the sauna the day before, then she left about 2am, she wishes to stay but because i cannot sleep with someone in my bed, and i am cranky if i do not have at least a few hours sleep, i sorta kicked her out my bad!

all during the episode we never talked about the price for her to came. at the end i just gave her rmb 700, which i heard to be a long time rate for average overnight service.

man, i feel bad to kick her out like that, but i have to work early the next day. oh well. work came first.

i checked out from the hotel the next day to go to another one nearby to the canton fair. i will resume the experience after the fair.

as an aside, i highly recommend services from ken to anyone who happen to visit chang ping dongguan. ken delivers what he promised and his assistant is understanding and patient with my fumbles in the language. for a free service, it is a great service indeed! i will definitely return for more in the near future.

Chinese New Year (CNY) is fast approaching and in China it is the biggest and most important holiday of the year. Millions of migrant workers will be returning home to celebrate with the family but without bringing sufficient funds home, they will lose face and be ridiculed by family members. From now until CNY (The year of the Rabbit will start on February 3, 2011), people coming to China should especially be careful of theft, robbery, pick-pockets, and most dangerously… kidnapping.

On Tuesday, February 26, at approximately 3pm, I received a call from Worldguy saying that his friend is missing as they were supposed to meet at 1pm. I called the Clipper hotel manager and asked them to enter his room in case he was just sleeping or something may have happened to him medically but he was nowhere in sight and his belongings were inside the room untouched. Worldguy was quite alarmed because he himself was kidnapped once when he was in Beijing so he told the hotel manager to cancel his friend’s room key in case someone other than his friend has it and try to enter his room and low and behold about an hour later, I got another call from him saying that a couple girls were trying to enter his friend’s room. I told him to call security and immediately headed to the Clipper hotel. En route to the hotel I received another call from him and was advised that they have caught one of the two girls and instinctively I told him that no matter what, do not let the girl go; otherwise, we may never see his friend again. Once I arrived at the hotel, I was led to the security office and immediately I asked the girl where they were holding our friend. The woman disguised herself as a tout and said that our friend was at their shop looking at the girls and would not leave at his own choosing so I told her to call her friends at the shop so I can speak to our friend. Once connected, she spoke in some dialect I could not understood so I said to her in a loud voice to let me immediately talk to our friend, she gave the phone to me and 10 seconds later a scared timid voice came on the line speaking Chinese asking me to speak to him in English but at that point, I was speaking in English so I knew immediately something was wrong as our friend was so scared and nervous he didn’t even realize I was speaking English to him. Once he realize that it was me on the phone, he starts speaking English and said, “please help me, help me, they kidnap me, they have beaten me, they say let the girl go and don’t call the police or else, they will kill me…”, at that moment, I told him to stay calm and assure him that we will rescue him, I then immediately told the girl that I know the truth, told her that our friend has told me that he has been kidnapped and that if we don’t see him in 10 minutes we will call the police. The girl panicked and started talking fast on the phone and once she hung up, I told her again that if we don’t see our friend in 10 minutes, she will be royally screwed. I told her that our friend is from overseas and if he is hurt in any way, she and her assailants will be put away for life. The next 20 minutes was excruciating as in my mind I don’t know if I had handled the situation properly under the circumstances. Fortunately, after 20 minutes, I got a phone call from our friend saying that he has been released and is on his way back to the hotel. Once he arrived at the hotel, we could see that he has been beaten up badly.

We were advised by the hotel to not call the police until our friend has been released as they have had experience in the past and that once the kidnappers know that you have contacted the police, we may not ever see our friend again. It took only about 10 minutes for the police to arrive and they took the girl, and ask the 3 of us plus one of the maid and two security guards to go to the police station for statements. Once we were at the station, we found out exactly what happened to our friend.

At approximately 1:30pm, our friend was shopping in the Pedestrian street area (this is the main shopping area in CP) and was approached by two ladies offering girls in a BBS type of setting. Our friend is Chinese who grew up in Canada but speaks fluent Putonghua. He has been to CP many times and have mongered throughout the world so he is no newbie. He was led to an apartment building nearby and one flight of stairs to the second floor. Once he enters the apartment, 3 guys jumped him. He tried to fight his way out of the apartment but was beaten badly. He was forced to give them his pin number for his ATM card and his room card at the hotel with the combination code for his safe. They force him to strip naked and took pictures of him and his documents and told him that if he cooperates with them, they will let him go and if he goes to the authorities then his pictures will be published on the internet.

This incident of course could have been avoided if he used some common sense, i.e. don’t go mongering alone especially to places that he is not familiar with, all the BBS except the one on top of the mini-store across the street from Yue Hua Hotel is on the ground floor. For most of us that has been to China, we all know that people are always running scams here praying on the unsuspecting tourists, so extra precautions should be taken, always trust your gut feeling and if you feel something is not right, then stay clear and return to your hotel as soon as possible.

Our friend was extremely lucky and last heard, the police has a full confession from the girl that was captured by the security guards, and she has cooperated fully with the police, and has given up all her accomplices and the location of the crime scene.

Remember that if you are in China and especially in CP to be extra cautious of your surroundings and don’t let your guard down whether you are out and about or inside your hotel room with your girl. Use your “big” head and you should have a fantastic time here in CP.
