I can now access this site without a proxy within China but I am aware that I am identifiable to anyone listening in on my internet. I would prefer to use a proxy. However "slyuser. after having spent two weeks between shanghai and beijing, i thought of providing some info on the scene, as seen from my point of view.

first of all, rtff is an absolute must for every respectful monger. the forum contains enough information to find the places where the action is, and the reports are sufficiently precise.

in both b and s, action is available practically everywhere. i was offered services in bars, on the streets, in sauna's, at the hotel. plenty of offer everywhere.

for a foreigner like myself (european) , i i think there are a few main rules to observe:

1. china is full of scammers. it is a fact. it remembers me of nigeria, for the level it reaches at times. particularly, one should dismiss without a second thought any offer provided on the streets. the forum is full of reports on this matter, but be aware. you will be offered services by a lot of people while here. they come to you with a kind of visit card in the palm of their hand, flashing to you. the promise is the obvious one, nice girl, massage, etc.

2. there are sw in china. they can be found around major venues and bars, and they cater to those who are hungry enough and who had no luck at the bars. another big avoid, old ladies, dirty, and highly suspicious.

3. prices are not cheap. as a foreigner, you will be offered 'gringo prices' everywhere, including shopping for clothes. chinese love bargaining, and they are very good at it. they also love milking tourists and foreigners in general, so if you discover you 'overpaid' for something, do not be surprised. the price differential between local prices and gringo prices can be huge. unless you are very experienced, you could easily end up paying the double after bargaining.

4. when both b and s, i used mostly pick up bars to find fun, in s, if you reach the manhattan bar you have reached many other venues in the area, you can just walk around. in b, i have looked at both maggie's and chocolate. b is organised in a different way, venues are more rep001tered around. thankfully, taxi's are plenty, cheap and reliable, so going around is not a problem.

5. chinese people do barely speak english. communications are very challenging. you need assistance to find a place, if the address is not written in chinese, the taxi driver will often be of no assistance whatsoever.

6. stay away from girl drink bars. there are plenty of them in both cities, and unless you enjoy spending a lot of money offering drinks to ladies, with maybe a chance to score them later (for additional money) , they fall straight in the 'scam' category for what i am concerned.

on venues, i can confirm several reports related to pick-up bars in both cities. prices oscillate between 500 (st) and 2000+ (lt) rmb, with the former a rock-bottom price. a fs sauna in a local establishment in s costs 480 rmb, but you tend to get what you pay for. plus, there is the inconvenience to look for the place and the time you have to spend in the whole process. similar places (one in s just in the same area as manhattan) quoted almost 900 rmb. special prices for unfortunate punters.

on time, in china it has a different value than in europe. locals can spend days without doing anything at all, hours discussing cooking, and 15 straight minutes thinking, at the restaurant and while holding the menu, what they will be eating. the waiter will be happy to stand there, forever if it is needed, waiting for the order to arrive. for you, this all means that you will find yourself out of synch the whole time v. local habits. be prepared to have endless patience. be also warned. a rushed foreigner is probably the single best thing can happen to a chinese trader, being a lady offering sex or a merchant selling anything else. they will skin you alive.

all sex services in china, as long as i can see, are very much hit or miss. in sauna's, since they do not understand english it is difficult to let them know that the lady offered to you is not good and that you have different requirements. in bars, many of the girls will speak only basic english, but they will be happy to nod to every single question you ask, if they believe a yes is what you are looking for. even hotel bar hookers have only a basic of english. so establishing and agreeing on services is a matter of luck. they say yes, but that does not mean yes. it means 'yes i hear you'.

my experience, although very brief, lead me to conclude that the best bet in both s and b is the bar scene, unless you are assisted by a local. when arriving, just hop on a taxi, give the driver a prepared paper with the name and address of the place written in chinese, keep your cardkey holder in your pocket (there is the chinese written address of your hotel) and go with the flow.

price wise, china is not on the top of my list. with 500 (50 euro) you can get fs in a sauna, if you find the right place (not all sauna's offer fs). you will get the lesser girl, the one chinese men do not book. in bars, if you wait till very late (1 am and later) you can score a girl for 1000. but she will again be a 'leftover' after all the best girls have already left, escorted by wealthy men able and willing to pay 200 euro a night.

many of the girls in bars are hard-nosed pros. in b, i interviewed several ones, and none of them will be interested in offers below 2000. i had to look for a considerable time before eventually settling with a 1500 offer, and she was not a top model. in s, it is very similar. the market is filled with foreigners working for blue-chip international companies, loaded with cash and keeping prices high. also, depending on the evening, it can be a seller market, and especially at weekends prices tend to go up and stay there. if you go for bars, be prepared to loud music, smoke and overpriced beer. sometimes, you will have to hunt without the comfort of a seat, like at manhattan when it gets a bit late.

if you are out with the precise plan to get a girl, they will feel it a mile away and they will skin you alive (again). if you drank too much, as above. if you look as you just arrived, the same. best is to go there with the idea to have a few drinks (few, i said) , set yourself a maximum amount of money you are prepared to spend, and get out not later than a certain time, without prey if unlucky, but with the finances to try again the day after. if you do not do so, you are at serious risk to get on the airplane back home, make some basic calculations, and discover that with the amount of money you left in china you would probably have more fun on your turf.

now, the price range 100-150 euro per night is not comparable to european prices, where this kind of services can cost a lot more. however, considering what you get and the time you have to spend to get it, plus the chance to be scammed, china is far below other destinations in asia. if you are touring for sex, china is not the right place to be.

personally, the thing that annoys me the most is the scamming culture typical of this place. 'returning customers' seems to be an unknown concept here. service quality, reliability, trust in agreements, and everything else that represents 'good commerce' in the west is not present here.

for short time visitors, my recommendation is to find a local expert to guide you through the local opportunities and to bargain for you. if you are on your own, i recommend you do your math carefully. china, despite what a lot of people believes, is an expensive country, and with a twisted culture for what concerns foreigners and commerce. it is a bit the same i found in many other places in africa or south america. only, here the double (gringo price) cost as much as it costs back home, while in other countries the prices remain very competitive.

keep your expectations low, do not trust anything you hear from local people, and guard your budget very carefully. and as soon as you have a chance, travel to better places.

I remember when SARS hit China and Hong Kong around 2003, people didn't want to travel to China and Hong Kong. SARS was extremely contagious. If you caught it, there was ONLY around 35 to 50% chance you will surive depending your age. The doctor who discovered the disease died from it.

I know people who did NOT monger or punted at all during this period. Friends in China and HK told me there were girls around but NO Johns around.
