I am planning on a trip to Brazil but I don't know so much about the country so I thought I'the post a few questions here and hope for the best.

- When is the best time to visit Brazil?

- What places (cities) do you recommend? I'the like to stay in a town with a beach. And also what places do you recommend if one wants to have a good time with the girls in this city?

- My budget is around 3000 to 4500 US dollars. How long do you reckon I can stay in Brazil with this kind of money? (I want to stay in hotels of average class. If one can say so.)

If you think you are going to find cheap hotels or apartments in Rio anytime soon you can forget it. As for airfares, they do for the most part follow the season and are cheaper now than they have been. São Paulo is not going to be hosting the World Cup and Olympics and it does not have oil platforms right off its shores like Rio. If you are willing to stay in a hostel and eat at the cheapest places (not McDonald's where a Big Mac meal costs around $8.75) then you can still do Rio on a budget. Otherwise, even if you spend most of your time at the downtown casas it still is going to cost you.

Habitually it's cheaper in Winter (June, July, August).

I don't know for the flights but for sure the hotels are a lot cheaper on the North Litoral of São Paulo (sometimes it's even 45% less). I guess it's the same thing for Rio and the resorts near Rio.

I was in Rio 1980 to 1987 and then again 1997 to present. In 1997 the dollar / Real was almost about 1 – 1, I found it very expensive but it is more expensive today. Also in 1997 I did not see many tourists / mongers similar to today but that changed as the dollar strengthened against the Real every year the dollar got stronger more and more tourists would come.

Cardoso came in and initiated the Real at par with the dollar (1995) after which it gradually went down to nearly 4:1 just before Lula was first elected. In 2002 and 2003 Brazil was a tremendous deal as everyone remembers. But, the early years of the real, I don't recall being especially expensive and the tourists were always coming. Except the bad times late '80s to '91 or so: the transition from Military Government was chaotic at times, we wouldn't go on the beach day or night and tourists were staying away from Rio. But things were still cheap. Now, is the most expensive I can remember since first coming in '85. From '92 on, there was always a big crowd of foreign guys in front of Help every night. Girls on the street and beach in the Lido section Princess Isabella early and mid-90s.

I used to stay at the Rio Palace (Sofitel) and at night went to the Café next door Pigalle. That Café was full of girls, just like La Maison and Mabs and Meia Pataca, they were all over the place.

But when I returned in 1997 everything seemed to be more concentrated around Meia Pataca, Ho beach and the Help area day and night with some activity at Mabs and across the street from Mabs at the beach.
