Tardiness - Can we hear from a Brazilian?

All this discussion of Brazilian tardiness by Gringos reminds me of the Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon is lecturing Raj on Indian culture. Surely we have a few Brazilians who visit here. What is your take on why Brazilians seem to have no respect for the time of others?

BTW, one of the things I have learned from Brazilians regarding why most are so short-sighted, always looking for the quick payoff and not interested in building repeat business is the experiences they had with hyper-inflation. Had I asked a Gringo I would have gotten 10 different answers.

Just curious how much were they expecting to be paid on the days they were late or didn't show up? What did you tell them you would pay them to come visit you and how long did they have to stay with you?

If you already have an entry visa to Brazil, then

You are good! You can stay up to 90 days in one shot at least on this trip. Check #6 on the link, it should give you more details. I think someone wants your $$$ for doing nothing for you. The FBI can't help you, the Brazilian Counsulates and Embassy are the agencies you shoud contact. Check the link below:

I think it's a shame Bravo's holiday time got so fucked up, but I agree with Sperto that that's not how Brazilians show disrespect. While Westerners find Brazilian lackadaisical view of time infuriating, the only lessons they might learn is not to trust North Americans. (You could also say North Americans shouldn't trust Brazilians, especially if you're dealing with a couple of lying money-minded putas, but mutual mistrust won't improve anyone's future experience sadly).

Brazilians view time as something flexible. *They put more emphasis on people, relationships. While some North Americans see the Brazilian perception of time and acceptance of tardiness as disrespectful, many Brazilians wonder why North Americans are so hung up on schedules and time keeping rather than to human needs. I listen to the 'connection' carefully when making an arrangement in Brasil. I am listening to see if I think they care, if they want to do what I'm asking or they're saying. On the other hand, in North America, I listen to the actual words that are said.

It's horrible when a holiday ends on a sour note. It can put you off a country. I've travelled with people who declare that such-and-such is 'rude in any country'. But rudeness is cultural, sorry. Better luck next time.

I don't think the girls arrive late out of disrespect as it's normal behaviour in Brazil.
I can understand your anger as you only had one week in Brazil.

There are many cities in Brazil where the girls are ten times worse than Rio-girls when it comes to arrive in time, e.g Manaus. In Manaus you should be happy if a girl is only 1 hour late. Sometimes there are good excuses; heavy rain, long busride etc. If I date them at my place I use the waiting time to take a nap. If I date them on a public place I use the waiting time to flirt with other women. I can't let a late girl ruin my day.

exactly! someone who sees my point! when they thought they were going to get a few hundred dollars in vs and some money, they got the lead out of their asses and broke speed records to hit copa! when they don't show up or don't call it means they do not respect you or your time. fuck all that "its their culture, you should just roll with it". thats 100% bullshit! because they can be on time when they have to be at the hair salon for an appointment, they can be on time when they have to be at work at a terma (or they get fined). so they know how to be on time when they want to be!

now if you are one of those guys who do not mind being disrespected, then more power to you. far be it from me to tell you to change, please allow the females to treat you however they want to. i on the other hand demand respect from people i deal with, especialy if i am putting money in your fucking pocket! i gurantee one thing, these 3 females will not forget this learning experience anytime soon. and the next time they are supposed to come over, i will bet 100reais they will be on time! i have already had 2 of them apologise for their behavior and promise not to stand me up again. 2 out of 3 aint bad, as far as i am concerned, mission accomplished!

Brasilians have a different idea of what "on the way means". I have had girls in my bed and overheard them saying on the phone "I am on the bus, I will be there in about 20 minutes". Knowing good and damn well, that she is at least an hour and a half away and that doesn't account for the time it will take her to take a shower and get dressed. I am sorry, my time is important and I stress to the GDPs, that when they deal with an American you can't treat us the same way you do brasilians. Time is very important to us and when you waste it, it pisses us off. When I was staying in Brasil for 3 months at a time, I dint mind if a girl was late or didn't show up (Well, I did mind, it pissed me off. But I was willing to let it go and move on). When I am only in Rio for 1 week, one fucked up date, can throw off my entire trip!

Rain messes up travelling time big style in Rio. Not everyone lives on a metro line. Add to that social etiquette allows Brasilians to be late (with each other, not just with gringos). The same doesn't usually go the other way round because Western etiquette is to be mostly on time, which is what we are likely to be judged on. I think a degree of caveat emptor comes in. If you don't allow for Rio time and GDP unreliability, you are likely to be easily disappointed. If a girl is travelling some distance to see me I a) keep on her tail, and be) have a plan be.

It can also work to advantage. A girl was two and a half hours late for me one night. She was travelling from the edge of town by bus in heavy rain. Even if I meet a gringo I'll usually say something like, I'll be at posto x at such-and-such a time for a while, then I'm going on to such-and-such for dinner. It gives people a fix if they are held up and also means I am not going out of my way. To me, that's a normal way of making arrangements in Rio unless it's the theatre or something (in which case you have to know that the other person can cope and anticipate delays and so on).

'Getting even' might sound righteous, but it still means you lost out or wouldn't feel that way. Never mind right and wrong, it's about practicalities, succeeding in getting what you want. Thinking Brazilian will get a higher hit rate, that's all.

    GDP's being late.

Getting any woman from Rio to turn up on time is a challenge. I am actually sitting at home now waiting for a girl to turn up, well sort of. Once it started to rain today I just knew she wouldn't turn up. So, she is due in about 30 minutes but there is no way she is going to turn up. Raining pretty hard outside and cold!

My current "girlfriend" (not the girl I am waiting for now) is one of the rare girls that actually turns up like clockwork. In fact I don't really like her that much, but I REALLY like the fact that she turns up on time, hence I have been seeing her for the last 6 months!

I have been back for a few days now and all three girls have sent me multiple emails crying about all the problems they had when they didn't have the money to pay for the cab. Or that they had to find money to pay for their transport back home or whatever BS they were complaining about. I gave each one a song and dance abut the fact that "I had to go to the airport early and I was trying to change my ticket but they wouldn't let me. And then my pone wasnt working, so I couldn't get in contact with them." I also added in "How did it feel when you wasted your time and money trying to see me? Didn't feel nice did it? Well now you know how I feel when you fuck up my vacations! TOMA!"

"REVENGE IS LIKE THE SWEETEST JOY, NEXT TO GETTING PUSSY!" Tupac Shakur.

They will be alright, nest time they'll know how to conduct business, because this is a profession.

O do not know whether you have an Amex, a Visa or a Mastercard, but this is "priceless".
