Recently spent a few days in Shanghai with a few good mates. All westerners in our mid-late 30's. We were well researched, but generally had very little previous Shanghai experience. After RTFF we prepared the following list of destinations for recommended activities. I have commented on our experience below.

HOTEL.

Sofitel Hyland Shanghai. 505 Nanjing Road East.

Sofitel Hyland was in a great location for shopping and sight-seeing. Contrary to some reports observed in the Shanghai Hotel thread. This hotel was girl friendly. After about 10pm, the security guy asked to take details from the girl's passport. Before about 10pm, we would just walk through as if we were a couple. There were some good rates at this hotel and we stayed on an Exec Floor meaning that we had access to the Exec Lounge which included free booze and food in the afternoons and evenings, plus breakfast in the mornings.

SAUNAS.

Visited Bodi. The Pudong Soapy Spa at Bodi Hotel. Entrance is to left side of hotel. Arrived at 2pm on a Sunday. Price was 880 RMB. Typical soapy.

Change into the robe in the changing room and leave your belongings in a locker. Then lead to a relaxation room. I waited for about 5 minutes here before boredom set-in and I navigated myself to the line-up. Good line-up of about 20 women of 7's. 8's. Chose No. 236. A tall and pretty Chinese with natural D-cups. Started with an assisted shower, then to the wet bed for cat-bath, body to body, BBBJ, rejected to offer of the anal play and rimming, cow-girl, reverse cow-girl, doggie, mish to finish. Go into the central door and there are two elevators in the lobby. Go to the 5th floor.

General Sauna Prices are advised in the forum as 600RMB 60min. 800RMB 90min.

FREELANCER BARS.

Manhattan was our freelancer bar of choice for reliable take-outs on a couple of evenings. Address: 154 NanYang Road near XiKang Road Jing an &21335; &38451; &36335; 154&21495; (&36817; &35199; &24247; &36335.

Solid selection of talent from Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and the odd Nigerian. The boys did not have much trouble finding 8's and 9's in the 20-25 year age range, however there were lots of 6's. 7's with a general age of about 25-40 years. Prices were 1000RMB-1500RMB range LT.

Other freelancer bars that were on our list are included below, however we never needed to visit any of these bars, so I cannot comment on value:

After RTFF we cautiously proceeded to test Shanghai's shark-infested KTV waters. We made a reservation for arrival at 10pm at the KTV at the Rendezvous Hotel Shanghai Merry, however we received a call at the last moment to cancel. We suspect that a regular customer may have turned up to take the room. Our concierge kindly helped reserve a KTV room for 7ppl at the KTV Business Club 2F 1045 Shanghai Huaihai Road near Fenyang Road. The phone number is 13795441281. We pre-negotiated a 1200RBM Per Person. Included room, drinks, everything included, etc. However, upon departure, it was clear that the staff expected that tips would be in addition to the 1200RMB per person. So this realistically increased to about 1300RMB per person. Line-Up included about 20 women aged 18-25 years mostly 7's. 8's. Some of the boys organised take-out's. The take-out's were not full fee, but rather were simply freebies or a 300RMB taxi fare. Basically, we wanted to try the local KTV experience. And overall, it was a good experience. Previous forum posters advise that you should pre-negotaite costs to try and avoid a massive up-sell and a massive bill. If you do have a problem, call police by dialling 110.

We visited Shanghai during a major event and so the Bund bars were humming. We generally quite liked these bars. There were lots of freebies and a healthy supply of freelancers. The freelancers were from Eastern Europe, Turkey and the odd African. Freebies were from all over the world with a healthy supply of middle-class or upper-class Chinese. We visited Bar Rouge a few times with good results. Again, LT for 1500RMB.

We did not visit BMD Bars in Shanghai. However the key headlines are:

Buy 2-3 Drinks Max at 100RMB Each. Max spend 200RMB-300RMB and all should be good. For this amount, you should be entitled to a fondle, kiss and pantie play with your new friend.

BMD Bars may be found across the road from the Hilton Shanghai (Hua Shan Lu).

BBS PUDONG.

We did not visit any BBS. However, we would have visited the BBS Pudong Century Park (apparently this is supposed to be good for 1st time).

Other posters highlight that Pudong BBS's are located on Yinghua Lu. Street starts at the intersection of Baiyang Lu and Yinghua Lu. Easily accessible from the Line 2 Century Park metro station. 5 minutes walk from exits 2. If you exit Line 2, you can walk west on Meihua Lu to Baiyang Lu. Hang a right and when you hit Yinghua Lu, hang another right. The four BBS will be on the right hand side of the street within the first block. Pronounce 'Chow Bay' upon entering the door. Which directly translated means 'knock back', like the old style fist knocking on back. Apparently this is good value.

SCAMS.

We were warned by members in the Shanghai forum about scams and saw lots of it o Nanjing Road.

Basically, if you get approached by anyone in the street. It's a scam. If you get taken to a restaurant or bar by someone. It's a scam. The standard operation is a 20 year old cutie will start talking to you in the street and ask about your plans. She will suggest a coffee, tea or meal. She chooses the cafe or restaurant and you get landed with a bill from the cafe / restaurant owner with a massive bill. Your new friend will split this 50/50 after you leave with your tail between your legs.

I'm in Shanghai next week for a couple of days, staying at the HI Pudong and wondered what action there was locally. My first time in China so don't know what to expect but a friend said that he found girls always hanging around the bar in the hotel.

One of those girls can move down the street to a massage place or sauna, and work under a different pay structure, but their daily lives tend to be so entrenched in routine and total lack of privacy. Taking a punter home, for instance, entails the rest of your pack knowing you're not coming home, you're earning more, your manager wanting a cut,"face" (not surprisingly, crucial in that subculture) , and safety. Every one of them carries the memory of a nightmare client entrenched and the medical bills alone counter any profit you would be making. Most importantly, it's sometimes hard for us to understand that Shanghai is very much a buyer's market. The average local is not going to pay just any girl 10. 20 percent of his monthly salary for a night with a girl he's already typefaced as a loose woman. The er nai's tend to be a fairly exclusive club and have successfully broken away from the pack mentality in which most of these girls operate. Any of you who go to KTV's with your Chinese clients / managers, you can see the girls in the line ups for yourselves. There are so many of them, and the locals don't see them as much more than lubricants for Anhui businessmen not quite on par with the Wenzhou and Fujian superstars of Xuhui and Jingan.

Anyway, I do hope this has lent a bit of a background to some of what you may see. This is an area of Shanghai that has survived the Expo and seems to still operate under a pre-2008 code. Foreigners are still a bit of a novelty here, so for any of the brothers, come, treat the ladies with respect, play safe, and let me know if you should ever decide to take the trip.

My experience is somewhat different. I've found that many of the girls in Changyi Lu (and similar) bars are available, but you have to go according to the bar rules. As others have commented, their main purpose in life is to drain your wallet by getting you to buy drinks for them, their friends, and anyone else they can find to swell the bill. Changyi Lu used to be low-pressure in that respect but they all seemed to get more pushy last summer, as a result of which I simply stopped going for several months and told the owners why. (Even at its worst it was never as bad as the nearby "Office" complex on Pudong Avenue. Most of those bars and girls seem to have relocated around the corner from Manhattan where they do their screaming harpie act as Aniki88 described). To get back to the point, the bar owners want the girls there earning money until the very last customer leaves. If you want to arrange to take them out you'll either have to wait until close to dawn or pay quite heavily for "lost income". I know one bar insists the girl earns ten drinks before she leaves, so you're looking at a barfine of 500 or 600 rmb. On top of whatever you negotiate with the girl for her time. It is not difficult to arrange this. If your appearance and behaviour are not too scary you can ask one of the girls who is available. Last weekend I was actually asked if I needed a "take-out" as closing time approached, and invited to indicate who I might prefer. As long as you treat the girl well and pay the agreed amount word will get around and you won't need to go home alone too often.

At the other end of the bar scene I was in a high-end hotel bar a few weeks ago and saw a neatly dressed girl sitting at the bar, could have been a business lady but turned out to be a very discreet working girl.
