Ayutthaya (http://wikitravel.org/en/Ayutthaya) is certainly worth a visit. Take an early train to Ayuttaya from Hualamphong station and come back with a late afternoon train (around 4PM if I remember well). Cross the street in front of the station in Ayuttaya; take the ferry across the river and rent a bicycle at the little square. Lots of temples and ruins to visit and a few nice museums. I very much liked the Ayutthaya Historical Study Center Museum (and not only because it was perfectly air-conditioned). While waiting for your return train to arrive, treat yourself to some Thai pancakes with banana (they are made and sold at the food-stalls in front of the station).
