1, 5 millions people / day use vans in Rio.

I live in Copa and I am affected even as a tourist: Going home from Balcony by Van was 2, 50 rs this year without any negotiation necessary. I never got cheated, change was always correctly given back. Since Monday I have first to walk down Av. Atlantica for some 100 yards to avoid the Mafia cab drivers in Front of Balcony and than get a taxis and take care, that the meter and the correct tarif is on. Usually I pay 8 reais. But a gringo can afford it. Worse off are commuters, who have to change the Bus or change from Metro to Bus to reach their job. They have to buy 2 tickets each way and fight their way into crowded buses during rush hour. And the whole mess for Rio's image during FIFA 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

Funny I was just about to recommend the Formula 1, but looked it up and it says,"IBIS BUDGET SAO PAULO PARAISO (ANTERIORMENTE NO FORMULE 1)" Right now it is showing 84. 69 USD.

    My first Balcony experience

    Hi,

I would like to share my first experience with Rio's famous Balcony girls.

After arriving Saturday evening in Rio the first day for some adventure was the Sunday. All Termas seemed to be close on Sunday, except Monte Carlo on Copa, at least that's what the web site told. So, heading to the Monte. But, surprise, surprise, it was also closed. What a frustration for me and my friend, not knowing alternatives. The famous Balcony was only two blocks away. Despite the warnings and negative reviews, we gave it a try. What could happened, I thought.

What happened was a big and positive surprise. Fiveteen girls were around at 5 pm Ok, some crazy sluts, but you can avoid them, by not getting in eye contact.

A MILF at the bar with fairly good English approached my friend. Very nice and good looking. After some time the deal was done. 280 Reais for the night. Not too bad, ha?

Now, I had to find my catch of the day. A good looking blond came in and took her place at the bar. After a nice introduction by one of the servants, I found myself talking to this classy girl. The deal was set after some minutes. Three hours for 200 Reais. Not as good as my pal, but I don't want a complete night, and the rate was still great, compared to home.

The evening went very good. Great conversation at the apartment with some wine, a nice shower (water) and very good entertainment in the bed. After three hours and money for the taxi (I am Old School!) she went away.

My friend had the same luck with his lady. She stayed until 7:00 and got some extra.

What do you learn from this story? I don't know, but that was not my last time at the hunting ground Balcony.

A man who took a van daily, complained he was unable to get on a bus due to overcrowding, and that he was waiting hour and a half. And that's just the Morning rush. I'd bet the evening rush hour will be worse. Demonstration is planned for sometime today in front of the MinistéRio Público, in Centro. Wonder how long this will last.

It can't be 100 million people. Its got to be more like 100, 000 people. Regardless, that is still alot of people.

    P. S Tummysangs request about information about BBBJCIM was made in 2008.
It appears to me that Eduardo Paes did an effective job of communicating the restrictions with the van operators. I haven't seen any vans in Copacabana today and there seems to be an increase in busses, I. E. No apparent overcrowding. The estimated 500 vans serving Zona Sul have apparently relocated to the other zones. The below cited figure of 100 million passengers is a bit high for a city the size of Rio (6 million gens.) I think it is a daily van ridership of about 100 thousand. I also heard they are looking at other (less radical) options to legalize the van operations.

I've never been charged extra for this in Rio. From my experience, you'll get CIM, but no swallow. They'll promptly go spit it out. Had my first CBJ at 4x4, last March. The 2 prive GDP's I met, performed BBBJ with out me asking.

There's a small McDonalds. Machado de Assis, the road you want, is opposite, across the main street. Redway is 10mins walk down the hill, orange wall in left hand side, no signage, just the number (449). Nice clean pleasant establishment, maybe about 20 lovelies (all youngish and decent-looking) , introduced parlour / privé style in a pleasant lounge with video music playing.

That should get your day started. Your question about hotels is too broad (Sao Paulo is the biggest city in the Southern Hemisphere). Decide which area you want to stay in. If you don't know the city, there maybe are people here who might show you around. Or get a metro to Republica. There's a tourist information just outside the station with maps and things. You can also change money easily around there in the daytime.

    Enjoy

I'll be glad to help you, please send me a PM fot details!

Regarding hotels, I would like to suggest the IBIS Budget or the GOLDEN TULIP near to Paraiso Metro Station. Both are very close to Av. Paulista and in a walking distance of Redway. Both are in the R$ 170, 00 / day range.

If you want something more sofisticated go to Hotel Renassence on Al. Santos.

No need to drop trousers. The new body scanners show your package along with anything you may be trying to hide.

Let's wait and see how this shakes out in the coming week. Eduardo Paes says he has arranged for extra busses to handle increased bus ridership. However he hasn't addressed the unemployment problem of the displaced van drivers and fare takers. I hope they don't try collecting fares from passengers in the backs of busses.
