I was recently reading a not very great book about life in Bali by a long-time resident who is obviously more street-savvy than I am. The only thing I learnt of any value from this book was the story of an unfortunate local taxi-driver who accidentally side-swiped a bule on a scooter in the dark. He immediately put the injured man in the back seat and headed for the best hospital only to find that they wouldn't treat him without a credit card that could be charged for medical services.

I will now always carry a cc tucked somewhere safe. Maybe in my shoe!

This is true throughout the third world. No pay, no medical services. Totally different from our privileged lives in our own countries. My GF in the Philippines has a number of small businesses. Her uncle who handles her rural interests in the country (provinces) was severely injured needing an emergency operation. His wife called and my GF had to take the 6 hour taxi ride to hand the cash to the hospital and the doctor and then buy the drugs for the operation. She then had to "supervise" the nurses in recovery as there is a practice of only using part of the (pre-purchased) drugs and reselling to others wanting to purchase similar drugs at cheaper prices.

This, however is totally different to her experience using the private system. She recently had a mole removed and the doctor was trained in the UK and interned in the US. The hospital was brilliant and the after surgery care was far better and incredibly cheaper than I could expect here in Australia. I know this is a thread on Bali but the health systems are similar throughout the third world. If you can pay it is brilliant if you can't you'll probably die.

As TTG says, Nusa Dua is the last place you want to be if you are looking for some action. Try somewhere like the Puri Santrian (not the Griya Santrian) at the southern end of Sanur. I guess it's about a 4 star hotel with a lot of individual "cottages" so you don't need to walk through the main lobby if you have your key with you. Bear in mind though that SHE can walk out as un-noticed as you both walked in! Lock up everything before you bring anyone home. It's only walking distance from many fishbowls which mostly have rooms attached for ST use anyway. You are likely bringing a 2 star girl back to a 4 star hotel so be careful. Typical ST rates are around 200, 000 Rupiah $20 but I doubt you would get a LT girl for under $100 although I have never tried. Maybe TTG or JustBlue could help on this point. There are certainly some better looking freelancers in Kuta / Legian at places like Crusoes Bar but don't expect to take them back to Sanur for much under 1. 5 million ($150) and there's no hope of getting them ST for $20!

Find Barri's map here, study it and print it out (assuming you are alone!) Start with one or two fishbowls before experimenting further. Don't carry more than you can afford to lose although it's not likely. Leave the smartphone and laptop in the room safe and take out say$100 for the evening. You can pay the girl in the morning if it's LT.

The website says: "The Hilton Bali hotel is located in the heart of Nusa Dua, a secluded luxurious resort area in South Bali." You will be in a mongering desert on a tropical island, YG. Go back thru the posts and you will see lots of advice about getting out of Nusa Dua. If you are visiting for a vacation with friends / family, you are going to have a rough time. You are a long way from any hunting grounds, and while taking a girl back to the Hilton should not be a problem, you will probably have to figure out a way to get her out of the Hilton, because taxis will be expensive and it's about a 30 minute ride to anywhere. You might consider getting a "second home" in Kuta. That's been the standard recommendation, TTG

Anyway, all hotels are girl friend in Bali. You might get a frown if the folks in the room next door are a married couple with 2 kids or something, but the staff will be very ok. If you bring your friend (s) to breakfast, make sure she / they aren't wearing the "I'm a hooker" outfit from the night before.

Your location is possibly a problem. You are going to spend a long time in a taxi to get to the usual hunting grounds, although I think you might be within walking distance of the mini-mart (that's an outdoor bar) accross the street from the Marriott Bintang.

You might want to tip the security guy 20k IDR as you come in with your new friend (s). You'll get a smile and your friends most likely won't get hassled on their way out, although I have always dragged my big behind out of bed to escort my bride for the night to a taxi or motorbike.

When I visit Bali next time, I will stay at Bali Senia hotel, Go to Kuta action area around 2:30 am and pay max 1 M. Always try girls from 10X and never visit 11X again. Sometimes I may go 29X to see some fatty fishes, but won't buy. After all, try another places in Barri's map, Bebek Benjil first.

I lived in Bali for a few years about a decade ago, I have been back a few times and while a little of the following maybe a bit dated it is in the most part valid.

I wrote this on a Australian forum regarding Bali. WL = Working Lady (polite term for prositute)

In general in the bars the there are two types of WL, those after sex with some money on the side and those after money. The latter are a lot less fussy than the ones after sex with some money on the side.

There are now some expensive looking hostess bars in Bali that are rip offs. Anything that looks an expensive version of a thai girlbar with lady drinks is almost gaurenteed to be a rip off, though the girls may neg for after hrs work, bar fines do not exist.

The locals let in the free lancers but the locals go to great lengths to ensure Bali does not become like Phuket. The few purly hooker bars that exist such as mini bar in Kuta, are run by or in association with the local council / mafia / village org (all the same thing). Places like the Bounty or Hard Rock in Kuta or santa fe in Seminyak have a mix of tourists punters and WL.

And now add this re the bar girls (in part also applies to massage girls)

In Indonesia there are three types of girls that accept money for sex.

Prostitutes.

Kuppa Kuppa Malam (night butter flys)

Girlfriends.

The difference is.

Prostitutes are expected to sleep with all clients.

Kuppa Kuppa Malam chose their client in bars, night clubs. Massage palours etc. Some refuse men they are not attracted to, while others charge more (it is more fubar than that).

Girlfriends accept money as a form of areshole insurance, while the Boy friend gambles that she is not just sleeping with him for the money. (it is also more fubar than that)

From what I have read of the Bali bar reports, some punters are having fun while other wondering what the fuss is about. When chasing girls in the bars it pays to be a tad realistic, a 25yo western surfer dude is going to see WL everywhere, while a 50 yo overweight tourist will see a much few number of WL most over 30yo and only in some bars. You don't have to be overly realistic you might still get a 22 yo at 30 but not at 50. It's not really about age but physical apparence. That is not to say there are no 20yo pros working but you unlikely to meet them in a bar, unless she is targeting domestic tourists in say the Hard Rock in which case you will need to speak Indo.

Taxi money is the best term to use with the bar girls, play the illusion it's a one night stand from wow to go, open the door for her, make her laugh and pay her cheesy compliments and the illusion will become true.
