For everyone that chooses Cartagena over Medellin, my question is why?

I'm looking to plan my first trip to Colombia and I'm deciding between Medellin and Cartagena. What are the pros and cons for both?

Cartagena:

You have the beach and better nightlife, but double or triple the cost of Medellin on almost everything. Very expensive place for a first time visitor.

Medellin:

Casas and more opportunity for day time action because of the casas. Also better suited for the budget traveler or for a person with little or no spanish speaking ability, as you can stay at the Mansion or whatever it is called these days with other gringos who can show you around. Also has a great transportation system for getting around.

novia showed up night before last from medellin. the beach was kind of dead. ran into locogringo in the small olympica. exchanged some info and laughs i haven't seen him in while. thanks for the lift. 1800 was the exchange rate in centro. buddy was leaving for the usa today so he took us out on his boat parasailing and to a remote beach at isla terre on south side of the rosario islands. went to isla the cholon later had lobster and shrimp for 40k pesos. novia did some snorkling near there. owner of the apartment i am staying in called he was making us up a dinner so we headed back for a fine meal.

damn hillbilly, i need your life in colombia! parasailing, private cruise to islands. paisan novia flying in from medellin, shrimp and lobster for $20, owner of apartment waiting with dinner? when i am there i am scraping together eggs and arepas in my apartment. just kidding, i have to say that cartagena has some great restaurants, and some great chicas. but it sounds like a great time your having!

On arrival I told him I had no intention to use any of services because of his very bad reputation. What I did was that I always asked another guy for a chair and soon it became easy to tell him, or anyone in his punk-ass crew, that I had "a deal" with another tout that I was to respect.

I don't think the fucking guy gets anything from the freelance girls that come to the public beach for a few days, even if they are seen leaving with a gringo. Anyway, to be 100% sure and to keep Tony dealing in scrubby 1000 and 2000 notes, here's what you do: get the girls' telephone numbers and have them coming to your place later on.

I speak Spanish very well, so I avoid him. My problem is that he is counterproductive. Meaning he will extort any freelance girls that do a deal with you on the beach. It's basically, fine ignore me but you will pay one way or another. This is my beach.

Last time I was in CTG was in 2001, and had a run in with this same dude. I can't believe he has been working the same beach for more than a decade.
