Top 10 hotels in the Gringo Gulch

You are on your way to Costa Rica. You need a rooms. Now what to do? Where should you stay? Do I stay at a 4 star hotel with a high Tripadvisor rating or should I go out on my own and find a place in the Gringo Gulch. While you might get a room with a International chain by just walking up and checking in, you might want to do your due diligence and make sure you can bring your lady up to your room. You will notice that some hotels do not allow working girls at all, others set the chica fee so high, you will not dare to take a girl there.

Some of the monger and chica-friendly hotels in the San Jose Gringo Gulch include in alphabetical order.

    1. Amistad http://www.hotelamistad.com Barrio Escalante a block from the Hospital Calderon. Sportsmens is a stones throw away. Best deal going if you like to eat, drink and at. Very nice hotel; rooms start at $79 (less for O. L. D. VIP discount) All inclusive, all you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, off of the menu. All you can drink beer, wine and well cocktails. No chicas working on-site; good wi-fi and free laundry service.

    2. Hotel Castillo http://www.hotelcastillo.biz/ (budget hotel and old timer's hotel. Starts at $50 very basic and basic services. Wi-fi available and a free breakfast.

    3. Del Rey Hotel and Casino http://www.hoteldelrey.com Probably the #1 tourist attraction in all of Costa Rica. A must see. Like Denny's it's always open. Key Largo across the street opens at 10 pm for dancing. More chicha's than you can shake a stick at. The rooms needs a little help and are not up to par. Most would not recommend staying there but is a most see for the beautiful women and over price drinks. $11 chica fee.

    4. Hotel Dunn Inn Barrio Amon http://www.hoteldunninn.com. Close to my heart as this was the 1st place I stayed when I came to Costa Rica years ago. All room have been newly renovated and start at about $70; Rick's Sportsbar opened in 2011 and in my opinion a great waste of space because it is such a great bar and atmosphere. Good food, service and wi-fi.

    5. The Freebird Hotel http://www.thefreebirdcr.com Nice renovated house turned into a hotel. Almost on Avenda Segundo. Close to attractions of downtown San Jose. Only downfall is that most rooms share bathrooms. They do have has 2 suites; rooms start at about $53 a night cash only. No credit cards accepted. Good wi-fi

    6. Hotel Little Havana (HLH) , Bariio Amon. http://www.hotellittlehavana.com Lot of changes coming and is in transition. I really want to hold off commenting on this one until all the dust settles. I personally think good things are to come. (O. L. D. VIP discount providers)

    7. Hemingway Inn http://www.hemingwayinn.com/ Nice place and rooms start at $35 cash but only has 2 of these rooms. Most basic start at $50 but be prepared to add 12% for credit cards, $3 for a safety deposit box and $25 chica fees.

8 Hotel Morazan http://www.hotelcostaricamorazan.com/ Another Hotel for the guy who is coming in on a very limited budget. A single room is $54 and a double is $60. Casino and Sportsbook on the premises. Even though Costa Rica passed a non smoking law, some of the rooms still smell like Lucky Strikes.

    9. Mona Lisa, new kid on the block. Old Clarion. Recently renovated and opened in Jan of this year. Casino, bar, Chicas, restaurant, M. P. And Yorleny for the very best deep tissue real massage in town. Best Texas holdem poker game in town as well. Has a few growing pains. Wi-fi is spotty and not enough safety deposit boxes. Friendly staff and good service. A few of the old Sportsmen bartenders are working there as well. One big plus is underground parking if you happen to rent a car while here. Rooms start at $69 a night. O. L. D. VIP discount provider.

    10. Sportsmen Lodge (SL) http://www.sportsmenscr.com My favorite to party and watch a good football game. Excellent Sports bar and bar food. Moderately price beverages and the staff is #1 in my opinion. Chica's on the premises and are not nearly as pushy as the Rey. Most will leave you alone while watching you favorite sporting event. Rooms start at $65. $275 for the awesome Penthouse. O. L. D. Discount provider. Good wi-fi and continental breakfast of fresh fruit, toast and coffee. Only downside is. It is just about always full and you have to book way in advance.

    Guest / Chica fee hotels:

    -Del Rey ($11)

    -Hemingway $25.

-Sleep Inn (next to Del Rey) ($25)

-Holiday Inn (arm and a leg) they really don't want your type staying at their wonderful establishment

Hotels that really do not cater to mongerers are:

    -Radison.

-Hotel Grand Costa Rica-Working girls not allowed in the hotel at all.

-Holiday Inn arm and a leg.

    -Balmoral.

    -Best Western.

-Hotel Presidente No chica's at all allowed. Too bad because it use to be one of my favorites.

It's not far from Amistad, they pick you up at your hotel and drop you off after. I forgot the name of the clinic, just ask "One Lucky Dogg" he is the one who arrange the appointments for me.

CultureShock, I was using the Haze as an example of ratings given, positive vs negatives on tripadvisor, not directing traffic to that establishment or making it a cross Jaco post.

How else do bust out joints get on the board-One Lucky Dog aka as "If you buy one now you get the second one free". Photo's of shrimps and pork chops from a hotel he pushes, rave reviews of dumpy rip off bars, endless on all CR boards. Advertised he'd pick you up at the airport for free, only a tip, then jacked your for $35. Yep, that's how Morada Haze gets in the SJ section.

With an Orbitz deal and rates as posted now for those dates, I can stay at the Morazan at $43. 38 / night all-in, Europa at $41. 69, Vesuvio at $51. 17 or Santo Tomas at $55. 04. Only the Santo Tomas has breakfast included.

Criteria is pretty standard: good location, chica friendly, not a total dump. Am leaning toward the Morazan on location but am a bit bothered by TA reviews mentioning noise or mold. Also not sure if Santo Tomas is chica-friendly.

Of those four, which one would you pick?
Morazan and Europa are dumps. I suppose you can stomach it if you do not let the actual carpet come in contact with your skin. Owners lost or are losing the properties in a court case and have not invested a dime in the properties for years, all the while milking them as cash cows.

Vesuvio is a bad deal at $51. It should be priced at about $15 considering the thickness of the walls and overall lack of furnishings. If you are really looking for cheap, then maybe the Inca Real. Otherwise the list from OLD is pretty much it.

    Business Model

Come on Jonesie, let it go. I did some research on this site with the pics you posted on your frequent visit to the P. C. Many, many pics. Most all said, fast becoming my favorite. Looks like your were having a good time. Remember, take the high road. My daddy always said,"if you can't say something good about someone, say nothing at all!" I will say something about good about you. You have gotten this Costa Rica section on this forum going again. Looks like it was pretty dead a few month ago.

There is not one business, hotel, Mp, brothel, strip club, private provider, mongering website or tour and transport service, that someone will not find fault with. This includes your site and my service.

I was looking at tripadvisor ratings on the Morada Haze nightclub in Jaco yesterday. 10 ratings. 9 excellent a 1 terrible. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...untarenas.html

My advise to you and others, take it if you want, is to be nice. Always be nice. Your business will grow and grow. Plus people like to do business with good, nice people.

I had a great time at Hemingway which meets all your requirements for $30 / night including tax and a nice breakfast if you pay on arrival.

If I had to pick out of those 4, I'd choose the Morazon. It's the only one that is chica friendly on you list. However, since I have been in business, I have only taken 1 guy to the Morazon. He was an old timer who had been staying there for years. The noise might get you. These are the top hotels I have taken mongers to in alphabetical order. Amistad, Casillo, Del Rey, Dunn Inn, Freebird, Hotel Little Havana, Mona Lisa and the Sportsmen. All are chica friendly. Pm me if I can assist you further.

I forgot to add that I have never seen a little guy eat so much. Dang can you put it away. I couldn't finish the pork chop when I had it and you devoured it in mere minutes. Here's a pic of your Pork chop and your ladies jumbo shrimp I took with you guys the other night at the Amistad. Good times. Thanks again.

    Friday party

We had a great turn out last Friday, great lesbian show in the front room, we had quite a few first time customers who had a great time and will be supporters of the club. We will continue the shows of Fridays. We will always put together a show for customers on any given night.

    Thanks for the support.

You sir are more eloquent then I, old made that comment after my post about La Amistad and the trains, I did stay there for one sleep deprived week. Will never go back, and from that statement of old I won't trust a word out of his mouth or keyboard, I really doubt he has stayed there either, just an agenda to put forward.

    Be well,

No disrespect intended, but you are currently running a business in San Jose / Costa Rica, specializing in "Tours, Travel & Transport." You have an inherent stake in promoting the "positives" surrounding the CR scene. While you have certainly posted some very useful information, you occasionally come off as somewhat of a "shill" (see above) , and I can't help but question the credibility of some of your posts. For example, you recently stated that people who had complained of the train noise at La Amistad mostly hadn't actually stayed there. This was patently false, and I think you know it, as you are also a CRT member, poster and sponsor. This board does not need another pitchman for the various hotel and bar owners in San Jose and Jaco, unless he is willing to report the unadulterated bad with the good.

Having said this, the consensus seems to be that you are a standup guy who runs a reputable business, and I'm seriously thinking of utilizing your services when I return to San Jose in late September for some major dental work. And Matt has taken concrete steps to greatly reducing the impact of the train noise in the morning hours. Nonetheless, I was eating a very fine dinner there a couple of months back and the train roared past, rattling wine glasses behind the bar and vibrating my dinner table, if only for a few brief seconds. People sensitive to this should indeed be advised to seek a room on the other side of the hotel.

You also very recently stated that the water quality in the Jaco area is greatly improving, and, dammit, it appears you are correct! Turns out fecal coliform counts are now well below the accepted level of "240 coliforms per 100. 000 milliliters of water." Interestingly, Quepos tested at 400!
