How did Polícia Federal tell you that you overrun your departure date? I'm just curious because on my last trip to Brazil I enjoyed myself so much that I extended my stay for the first time and therefore caused an overstay. Whatsoever while leaving GIG nobody mentioned it and I got the common departure stamp so I'm not sure if I have to pay the fine when heading back to Brazil in January or if I luckily slipped through.

All the ATMs are in the high traffic shopping and departures areas. I don't recall any ATMs the restricted arrivals area. There might be one in the area of Dufry Shopping but that is beyond the area of the Police Federal passport control. If they insist on payment before you enter then they should accept dollars or euros.

3. A month out of next trip, get in touch with former Airbnb hosts, get a private hosting, rather than through the website. Prices ranged from $36 USD to $90USD per night for great, great places. The two best ones in Leblon and Lapa bear repeating.

Maybe in certain areas it pays to fit in by wearing a Vasco jersey to avoid being a target, and maybe this applies in Copa and Ipanema. Not Leblon and Gavea.

6. Do buy and bring a Brazilian shopping bag, and eliminate one backpack by packing less cloths. Cash is king, and fungible. I can get by in Brazil with one small backpack carry on. Put a shopping bag with some portugese on the side of that, and I can pass for a Brazilian at 50 miles per hour on a onibus. Couch surfing Airbnb is easier done with one backpack than two for 3 weeks. Could easily be 6 weeks at a shot. Do bring a back up 2. 5 pound lap top and store it with a friendly centro biz.

7. Physical fitness. At this middle aged point in my life, the most important issue is injury prevention, hence yoga, pilates; and swimming and biking will make the endurance shagging with the 22 year old brasileira of my choice well worth for many years to come.

Though, the ATMs give still only R$ 100 between 22. 00. 06. 00.
