I arrived in Medellin airport from LAX through Panama on COPA this morning. The migration agent told me I was over the 180 days per year staying in Colombia. They sent me and my luggage on the next COPA flight to Panama. I have been doing this for years, and it is possible that toward the end of the year I exceed the maximum allowed numbers of days, but usually they don't bother to count. My ex-girlfriend in Lima is a manager at an international accounting firm. Every time that she has come to visit me in the USA she has paid 100% of her ticket. And the first girlfriend that I had in Lima had her own radio and TV shows. Whenever I came to Lima she would always pay for my hotel and pay every time that we went out. Once when her car was in the shop and she met me at the airport, she overpaid for a taxi to take us to the hotel. She paid $20 for the taxi. When people hear you use them they assume you have a better grasp on the language than you actually do.

So true. I think the best advice is to know Spanish slang and idiomatic expressions, but never use it. In fact, it's sometimes advantageous to have people think that you don't know any Spanish.
