I didn't see anything that resembles a Calle Sexta. There is what is called the triangle where the few Tijuana type bars are then maybe a few for people into cumbia and banda. Unfortunately I found the city to have ZERO vibe but you do need to see it once.
If you are used to good Chinese food (ME / NYC) you will be disappointed. Although I will say it is 1, 000, 000 times better than the crap they serve you in Tijuana.

I'm dithering between the Lucerna and the Araiza. Similar properties. Not sure which might be the better location.
I'll have a car, so transport, at least until it's time to go clubbing, won't be an issue. However, I have no idea of the cost of taxis or distance to the nightlife.
This is Rocky's idea, probably because she's never been. I definitely believe Tijuana offers more for less, but who am I to argue?
Do you know if there is a local equivalent to Tijuana's Calle Sexta? That would probably be ideal.
Others have said that Mexicali has lots of good Chinese food. I live in one end of the San Gabriel Valley, so I'm surrounded by all the Chinese food one could want or imagine. Just about every major Chinese cuisine style can be found within a 5-minute drive, all is pretty authentic and much of it as good as anything I've had in Hong Kong or Taipei. About the only thing I haven't seen available is roast dog. So, I am always skeptical when a place bills itself as having excellent Chinese food. So I may skip that cuisine altogether. Rocky may have other ideas.
SLC looks interesting from the map. Time permitting, we'll take a drive over there. Thanks for the tip.

There is Hotel Del Norte which is smack dab in centro and within walking distance to the "triangle" with the clubs. That IMO would be your best bet for centro. Others have mentioned La Chinesca but it didn't look appealing to me (YMCA) when I saw it.
Mexicali is hotter than hell and there is NOTHING there that you can't find in Tijuana under better conditions. With that said if I lived in Calexico I would definitely hang out there. Although more than likely I would take the 2 hr bus ride to Tijuana.
I ate Chinese food there but I wasn't impressed at all. If you have a car you might do a lot better than I did. I've been twice already.
If you drive there (depending from where) you might want to look into San Luis Colorado. Tempe John posted his results a while ago. I've been through there on a bus and something sparked my interest even though it looked tiny. I'd like to go back one day.

I know this isn't the correct thread, but the Mexicali thread doesn't get a lot of activity and I don't "know" any of the posters there, if you know what I mean.
Can anybody give me any intel on some 3-star or maybe 4-star hotels? Rocky the Flying Squirrel wants to go there, but she's never been. Nor have I.
I'm basically looking for someplace semi-decent (think Ticuan) that's fairly close to the local nightlife (not the zona roja).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Posts: 121Does anybody know if Ticuan hotel will change reservations for a prepaid online reservation made through their website? I'm kind of under the weather and not sure I want to be there next week. Also, my conference trip to Europe in mid December got cancelled and that might be a better time for me. Any chance of getting that reservation changed?
Otherwise I could still go. Or forgo $80. But, ugh, just ate a fee for cancelling conference registration and don't want another one.

Thanks for the great TRs. Quick question. What club (s) were you visiting on Revu?

Visions of young Anna Nicole danced in my head as I packed up the room in preparation of what lay ahead. So happy with the quality of Similare's Viagra, I opted to pack my generics from India and put another visit to Av Revo on the agenda. I grinned ear to ear, revisiting the memories of the MILF duo from the night before, as I briskly walked to the border. But, a bit of sadness loomed as I knew this was my last jaunt into Tijuana for way too long.
Once in Mexico, I waived past the taxi stand armed with the knowledge that an 80 peso ride to Centro was a mere 1/4 mile away. To review, you just keep walking along the lanes of cars entering the US until there is an opening to cut across that road. There were a few locals doing the same so it was easy to find and follow. A one-way turnstile (a style that I'm now all too familiar with) awaits on the other side. Swim upstream against the few pedestrians walking into the US and at the end of the awning lie a variety of taxis who have just dropped people off. It seems their choices are to either hope for a rider back to Centro, or to beat it back to town with an empty cab. Half of something is better than all of nothing. And "half of something" seems to be defined as 80 pesos. Which is a hair over six bucks.
Riding to Centro, there is an interesting display of hundreds of white crosses with names on each around a huge grafiti sign asking "when will it stop" along about a 1/4 mile stretch of airport fence. I asked the cabbie what it was, and my best understanding is that it's in memory of people killed by the Tijuana Policia. Great. Once back on my favorite block ever, I hoped out of the car, thanked the driver and headed for Adelita. It was a bit earlier than I had been in town previously, and the talent was thin. I thanked the midget in the back of the club with a small tip for being so kind and attentive over the days, headed outside and circled to the back of the block, entering HK from the opposite side. Things were more hopping at Hong Kong, and I immediately gravitated to my preferred vantage point above the stage. I really like the VIP card, in that the night time doormen started to recognize me after I whipped it out a few times to avoid the $5 cover. Between those few covers, and a few cervezas, I probably saved half the cost of the card. I do believe that I received extra time upstairs, which is priceless at that given moment. And, I'm sure I will be back before the expiration in four months.
Monica, the lanky brunette from yesterday was all smiles, and after an obligatory drink we went upstairs for what was a very good, but not great, session of an average BJ and some RCG. I hindsight, she was too obvious in her acting and that took away from my enjoyment. I mean, come on, those porn star winces and lip bites are complete BS. Not that I don't appreciate the attempt, but some other material would have been more agreeable. There were two ladies over the course of the trip that I did not extend time on, and she was one. Not that there is anything wrong, at all, of experiencing a gorgeous brunette with a body made for the beach. But, we really didn't connect, and that was disappointing given the feigned connection that was there until I agreed to go arriba. As is always the case, the best looking ones are rarely the best ones. Downstairs, I bid her goodbye, and after a $3 cab ride I was walking down Avenido Revolucion.
I stopped in the Caliente sports book to cash in a hockey ticket, and settled into a few pony races before I left. I spent a couple of hours walking around Av Revo, stopping at some of the bars with outside tables to enjoy the local talent as they wiggled by. The going rate, if you ask during the day, at one the empty dance clubs is 2 beers (one in your hand, one iced in a bucket) , a complimentary shot of tequila in a little plastic dixie cup, and small bowl of salsa and chips is $5. The same four-pack of viagra at the same Farmacia from the day before was now $17US. Once again, I disappointedly dumped three in the toilet, not wanting to have any anxiety about La Policia or crossing the border. I stopped in Las Puglas for a drink, and really like the club. The sun was just about to set, but there were already a dozen single senioritas in the bar who outnumbered men two to one. A couple were real stunners, and one kept looking at her watch as if she was being stood up. I'm fairly confident that I was catching the eye of a nice looking middle-aged woman with superb breasts who looked like she worked in an office or something during the week. But now it was Friday, and she was getting started by sitting at a table drinking a bucket of beers by herself. My kind of woman. But not in Tijuana, not on my last night. Not while I was lusting after young Anna Nicole's imminent return to Las Chavelas. With that in mind, it was time to return to the Zona Norte, promising myself that I would be back in the US no later than midnight so that I could get to the airport early the next morning after at least a half-nights of sleep.
The two MILFs were in Adelita and reminded my of my promises of a foursome. They mocked me like "ohhh. Tomorrow. Three ladies" making hand gestures of beer bottles to mouth as we laughed and had a couple of drinks, but I wasn't ready. I bid them adios, and excitedly went to Las Chavelas. Anna Nicole was not in the booth where I left her. Or in the seat where I found her the night before. I did the complete walk around twice and she was nowhere to be found. With a sunken feeling, muttering, I headed to Hong Kong. The place was mobbed, and I had to settle for a seat down by the stage, and immediately got some companionship from a flawless blonde. The mesero who attended to me throughout most of my trip, told me he was leaving, and I gave him a tip and a big hug thanking him for such wonderful service and keeping an eye out for me. I enjoyed hanging out with my 25-year-old blonde companion, but the crowds were just too much to handle. I left and did a quick scoot through Las Chevalas to get to the other side of the block. With that trip, it was apparent that young Anna Nicole was not in the stars for the evening. I needed to figure where to go to regroup, and ended up at Tropical Bar. The scene of my first night's passionate lusting after the tall, brunette that I so wanted to take to Las Pulgas.
And, the scene from some other night of kissing and mutual fondling with some chunky dancer at the end of the Tropical bar which emerged from the depths, as she had now found me again and wanted a ficha. At least this one I remembered (unlike the one at Chicago Club). I passed, becoming concerned that time was running out, figuring I needed to make a final pass through Chavelas, Hong Kong, Adelita, Chicago, and perhaps Dulce Gabbana to find my last lady. I hopped over to Las Chavelas and as soon as I walked in saw, from the back, those blonde locks that I so enjoyed the evening before."She's here!"
I told her I was so happy, and grabbed a couple of drinks as we took to a booth. She chatted in Spanish, and I in English, as we knew were this was going. After a half drink, it was upstairs for an incredible hour that I'll never, ever, forget. And then, a beer for the road with my Mexican beauty before I looked her in the eye, and sadly said "Adios." "Adios" she replied as I turned around and walked away. Six hours later, I was in my rented car and heading back to the San Diego airport groggy, red-eyed, and so content.
