But an update to all the brothers who have been asking me in the past and have been nice enough to PM to request further information, the Ximen OFOP is out of business. Thanks for the colorful report, but where was this shop? On which street, near which station? 70 NT is the fare just to get in the cab, so was it close to the station, within a couple minutes drive? Also, not all cabbies are comfortable dishing info to a foreigner on what *some* (not all) Taiwanese locals may feel isn't the most savory elements of their neighborhoods.

In fact once I found the two massage joints, I whipped out my Google Maps and realized I could just walk to one of them in the future. Really I was just paying him for information and saving me time, more than the ride, and didn't mind. Note that I simply asked this guy where there was Thai massage, did not ask about "girls" or "extras". I was in fact just looking for straight massage. I have been to a dozen Thai massage places here over the last 5 years and this was the first time I got a whiff of extras. I wasn't all that needing, but figured it my duty to follow up for by brothers here (and for my little brother).

One time I did ask a driver to show me around SanZhong and once he realized I wanted "xiao jie" he happily pointed out places. A different taxi driver seemed happy to relate to me his experiences in Yilan. Its probably true that not 100% of taxi drivers are going to help. You could even ask them before you get into the cab. I mean I think you can size them up as to whether they are a family man churchgoing type, or just a regular joe. Worst case costs you 70NT yes? I'm batting 2 for 2 so far. I have a taxi driver friend in San Francisco who stops the cab in the middle of the street and makes them get out when they ask him to help cruise street hookers. OTOH I found a taxi driver in Berkeley who called up a girl for me, picked her up, drove us down to the marina, and let us do it in the back seat while he went for a walk. I think anyone in this forum knows that YMMV, and maybe that the hunt is even part of the fun. Kerfluffle, you seem like a senior member, can you PM me if you need the details.

So again, I only have a sample of 2 drivers. But they seemed all to eager to help. Like they thought it was fun and that they'd have a good story to tell later about helping out the horny foreigner. As we all know, Taipei is a lot more effort than just about any other major city in Asia. (Can anyone name an Asian city less accessible for foreigners?) Not saying its not possible to find p4p or to score freebies, or that its not rewarding, but it does seem more expensive in time or money. And the forum here is kind of out of ideas. And people are complaining that the Taipei forum is not much help. Kind of a broken record. 2 or 3 guys bragging about their freebies, and toss in a bit of RTFF, and a bit of "just go to Caesars", plus the odd "the best way to buy sex in Taipei is to fly to the Philippines". THEREFORE I suggest we all try out this one new idea for the last year or two (the other one was OFOP) , talk to taxi drivers who look friendly (half of them start conversations with you, yes?) , and see if we can ferret out any new beaver.

Can anyone advise to the best place to go in Taipei for treatment and testing of an STD? I know someone hospitals seem to play games and don't want to provide the proper antibiotics to fight gonorrhea or chlamydia. Is there anywhere that can get you promptly tested, and dispense the proper medicine in the Taipei area?

I left Taipei 16 months back but had to get tested prior to transfer. I found a place that was quiet and discreet through google, no I'd neede. Its a small totally Chinese place near a big hospital. I think I posted details it here if you care to dig back, but if not search for hiv testing, and its in there somewhere.

Sorry to be away so long mates, been busy slaying trolls in the Angeles City forum. Anyway, the Thai massage places near me suddenly closed. I was just getting vegetarian there, and thought they all were. Until today. In search of a new Thai Massage, I went to the nearest metro stop, and asked a taxi driver, if he knew of any Thai massage. He said hop in, and 70 NT later he showed me one, and dropped me off at a second. The first one, last week, was your generic dry Thai massage for 1000NT, no hint of more, and just an average massage. So this week I thought I'd try the other place he pointed out, just looking for a massage.

Main lesson here is, taxi drivers know the area, if you speak a bit of mandarin or have a photo on your phone of what you're looking for. We really could use this more to ask them where the sex is. Just ask for "xiao jie".

Take the subway, Zhongxiao Road line to Banqiao station. I forget the exit number at the station. Call up the clinic and they will tell you. Good thing is you don't have to give your real name. The hospitals on the other hand ask for I. D. This clinic does testing and will give you medicine first if you have symptoms.

Clinic hours.

Mon thru Fri. 9 am to 1 pm and 5:30 pm to 9 pm.

Sat 9 am to 1 pm.

hate to get down on people who offer up info but agree regarding the poor directions, especially after also trooping around the shin-kong skyscraper-mitsukoshi complex area with multiple 7/11s to no avail in the weeks before daiwan posted. i've also attached a separately searched google map depicting the location of all ten 7/11 stores located in the vicinity of taipei main station to illustrate the point: now if trunner would be so kind as to specify which of the 7/11s he is referring to and/or and confirm the image uploaded in daiwan's post, it'd be great (on my attached google maps image, the 7/11 that daiwan seems to be referring to in his photo is location "b," rather than location "a" as depicted in the google maps image he linked to). thanks if anyone can clarify.

Very much appreciate your input, and please don't hold back if you've any more to add! Every little bit helps to build on a body of knowledge, even if sociological so as to better understand what situations are likely to be encountered and which are best avoided.

To follow-up, I went for a longish walk around the area and neighborhood last week. Damn this rain and cold weather, which precludes a lot of the fun of walking on those streets!

The [not young] ladies on Guangzhou street were indeed very aggressive, and it brought back lots of fun old memories. I also don't think there's much danger; the biggest risk is probably a mismatch of expectations vs. Costs. It seems unlikely you'll be handed a surprisingly large bill at the end, but YMMV.

For anyone who has reasonable Chinese language skills, I suggest you prenegotiate an all-in price, menu, and allotted time before you let someone bring you inside. Once you're inside you've lost a lot of leverage. While you're out on the street there are many other ladies for you to look at, just a few feet away, and your lady doesn't want to let you stray once you've expressed mild interest.

Sometimes I pepper the negotiations with a reference to a historical Chinese character known for his fairness, and I tell the ladies not to worry, that I am like this historical person, and hope that they can respect that, and if they're comfortable, offer me more and I will give more.

A few other things that I ask, request, or insist:

-I prefer not to see any men. Will there be men working there?

-No smoking. I don't want to breathe any smoke or have my clothes smell of smoke.

-Are there other women available too (always) , in case I want to have two women serve me at the same time?

-Is there a shower?

If the weather improves this week I'll venture out again.

I've taken chances and gone to unknown places with unknown people, but looking at the bigger picture, anything can happen to you while ingesting unknown beverages and going into unknown buildings with unknown people. You're safer sticking to street-level establishments, or having a local person lead the way, and its unlikely you'll be missing out on something noteworthy.

That said, the area has been offering the same sorts of activities for 40 or more years, so it's probably one of the safer places in Asia.

Oh, by all means, you're absolutely right; when posting "for better or worse," it was meant figuratively and not literally. Having "fun and funky" cultural experiences does not preclude caution and common sense. Was just trying to convey a bit of color to the 'hood, which you seem to know well judging from your past posts. Understand what you're saying re: sticking to street-level establishments, and don't at all mean for people to be careless and head non-thinkingly into dangerous situations, but it couldn't be denied that on the day in question, the hotter of any available momo girls were to be found in the off-street 7th floor location in one of the structures on the south side of Guangzhou St, even if the dicier-type establishments shared the same building. As you note, wading into such environs comes with responsibility for one's own safety, but when posting, relevant questions were raised for everyone's benefit (what are the local practices, systems, traditions, expectations, etc when wandering around the area and considering partaking of momo shop services, etc, and knowing that they're a fixture of the area for decades). The post was aimed at appealing to the adventurer in all of us, but with the assumption that mongerers have some relevant living experience and street smarts, if not in Taiwan, then elsewhere in this general part of the world.

In any case, it's interesting what goes on; lots of activity in the neighborhood. Even the street-level momo shops in the lanes to the north of Guangzhou St have provocatively dressed middle-aged (if one's lucky, upper 30s at the low end, but often in their 40s and 50s, etc.) women in the middle of the day, but they often are straight-up serving tea in the open to elderly male customers (as are the shops in the lanes south of Guangzhou St). Maybe that innocuous activity sustains their business between more mongering-oriented episodes? Who knows. (That's why, as previously mentioned, a FAQ / cheat sheet on the LS neighborhood activities would be helpful. Still, as previously mentioned, the area scene is friendly enough and receptive to foreigners, but it would be helpful to know better the expectations, even if unspoken, that the momo shops have of their customers, and vice-versa.) For better or worse, it's all definitely a cultural experience and a funky chance for local fun!
