Yes, that is an old trick. Even Lonely Planet warns against it in some editions.

It happened to me in Moscow in 1995. I insisted that I would show my wallet only in the broad daylight instead of where I was led, a dark corner of an old apartment building. At that point they no longer pursued my wallet.

Or they were not as good as those who tricked SamLondon.

that's why i prefer staying at good centrally located hotels where i can speed interview the girls in the lobby. not to my liking, then 50 uah taxi money and on their way.

hotel security on my side and my taxi driver waiting outside. anyway they will need 2 ukrainian heavies to tackle me.

i knew about the oldest scam in kiev even before landing there in 2009 by doing a lot of research here & on virtual tourist trpiadvisor, lonely planet etc.

    kiev: scams.

    http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/travel-...ne:scams.html.

"beware a favorite scam that is frequently encountered in main tourist areas, especially if you are a solo traveler walking alone. a large packet of money will suddenly appear on the ground in front of you. almost immediately a "local" will appear exclaiming, usually in english,"hey, look at that!" he'll pick it up and flip through it. his enthusiasm is infectious. he will look around and see no owner. the line that follows may vary from "come on, it's our lucky day!" to "in my country it is traditional to share good fortune". shortly thereafter the "owner" of the dropped money will appear. by this time the happy stranger will have concealed the money on his person and claim no knowledge of it. the owner will then demand to see your wallets. the money-finder will happily show his, whereupon the owner will demand to see yours. while your wallet is open for inspection, the finder will do his best to distract you. while this is going on, the owner will swap out bills in your wallet. leaving a ten for your hundred, or a five for your fifty. it's all about speed and distraction. you won't discover the switch (if you do at all) until much later. so if you see a wad of money on the ground. just keep walking and ignore its "finder".

Maybe its better to try to vk. Com instead of mamba, there are more profile, more legit profiles, more photos, girls post their last names, their friends. Its probably safer

Why would you want to even give somebody 100? How about buying a fucking baseball bat or taser / pepperspray and going out and standing your ground. Fuck that giving them money, I had it happen in st Petersburg when a girl I had just done came back with a boyfriend and tried to get money out of me, I head butted him and broke his nose, that was the end of him sat there on his arse claret poring down his filthy t shirt and crying his eyes out. Don't back down to that, it just breeds more of it.

    Perfect Scam. Kiev Style!

Location: Outside a hotel next to Rio Striptease and across the road from Club Avalon / Club Ajour. Time 6pm.

Walking back to the hotel. Just pass entrance to Rio and in front of nearby alley, a respectable looking guy bends down and picks up a pile of Euros in a travel exchange plastic wallet and pretends he has just found it there on the floor.

Makes eye contact with me, makes out all innocent and asks "not yours?"

At this stage you feel compelled to do the same, so I take out my wallet and allow him to ruffle through it. While he is doing this, the 1st guy takes out some other loose bills from another pocket and allows 2nd guy to examine this also (This is the clever bit). This is timed perfectly so that your eyes are drawn away from your own wallet and towards what the 1st guy is giving to the 2nd guy.

Everyone is given their wallets and money back whilst the 2nd guy is threatening to call his girlfriend to who he now claims saw us pick up the money.

In this commotion, we are drawn back out the alleyway towards the main road. When we get there, the second guy suddenly notices the end of the plastic wallet sticking out from the 1st guys pocket. Reaches out and snatches it out of the pocket. A minor scuffle breaks out between them before the 1st guy rushes off accross the street persued by the 2nd guy towards Club Avalon / Ajour.

You obviously make a hasty exit from the scene.

Its only afterwards when you have your presence of mind back again that you reach for your wallet and go through to see if anything is missing.

He had left me a few $5 bills that I had but lifted all by $100 bills ($600). He has obviously done this whilst I was distracted in the alleyway.

As a Londoner, I thought I was pretty street-wise and couldn't be conned but these smart and slick Kiev lads have shown me that there is more than one kind of talent that Kiev has to offer in abundance.

Enjoy your visit to Kiev but as with visits to Casinos, only go with money you are happy to lose.

How quickly you lose will depend on the talent that seeks you out (aka. They saw you coming!)

    Enjoy

It would be very dangerous to hand over money and show weakness. Just wait outside somewhere and scan the scene. Don't look through windows because the guys will always stand back if they have a girl.

In Kyiv right now there is a serious lack of police presence. I recall during my trip to Kyiv in 2010 there were police everywhere. Not so much now. In truth the police are nearly useless anyway. Mongers must be aware of the current situation in Kyiv and Ukraine.

    Kiev

Hi mongers, I have been to Kiev and one should just hit Khreshatyk Street (near mcdonalds) to find truck load of beautiful girls. Please do not get in touch with dating sites and others things similar. They are all a scam.

Just see a local on the street and ask her if she needs money. In some cases they will say no and in some yes. Its hits and misses. Some ukranian girls are conservative so getting them is not so easy but they are very nice girls. Extremely pretty on an average easily 7. 5-8/10. Tell them you want to go to Odessa and don't mind paying them for their company. This is what I did. Book a room and fuck them happily. They can invite friends too. I was there for a few days and had amazing fun. Try going to Avalon in Kiev, amazing place to get some prost. Other nice bars and clubs have face curfew so getting in is not so easy.

Going rate was about 900-11000 UAH for an hour which is super cheap comparing other cities.

    Have fun and stay safe,

    Cheers

Yes, they are good at that

I have trawled many of the Kiev parlours looking for full service but it never materialises. I note on the Relax web site they offer 'libertine' massage with the girl pleasuring herself with a toy. Is this a real offer do you think (or know) or just a teaser.

If you are concerned by your safety here, as well you should be given the current tensions, I have a suggestion. If your apartment looks out onto the street, tell the girl that she should call you when she gets to a landmark, a store, a kiosk, anything that you can see directly from your apartment, and call you from there. That way, you can see just who is calling and if she is who you want and who she says she is, you can then answer, go down and meet her and this is also in a public location. The same concept applies if your apartment faces the courtyard. Have her stand somewhere that you can see her clearly.

If it is a shakedown, then while she may still call you, but if you cannot see her, then you have no need to answer the phone. If you do answer and still do not see her, then just ask her to stand where you asked her to stand. If she does not show on that spot or hangs up, then you have been saved from a possible problem. It is not a 100% foolproof but it will help, especially late at night.

Do remember as CB said, police here are completely useless so you need to make sure that you take every precaution to ensure your safety. Kiev is generally a very safe city. However, since Maidan, a lot of very doubtful and criminal types have come into Kiev to take advantage of the situation. Foreigners are considered an easy mark but while chances are very slim that you will be a victim, it does pay to be aware.

This is good advice. Shakedowns are to be expected with lack of law enforcement. I recommend watching your building from the outside to do some recon. Never give out your apartment number.
