I think we read over here that often police stops (newly formed) couples checking if they are really a couple of just an occasional one (P4P) when the two are about to enter a building.

Whether it is a scam for bribery or there is some minimum substance to the case it is another story.

I would say this is happening only recently.

But it is what it is today. I would avoid walking with any girl who looks like a pro.

Well I can see the problem with picking up a 16 year old, its illegal for a start, and why would anyone want to be in company of a 16 year old? It can only bring trouble.

Not personally interested in 16 year old, but I found it hard to believe that a 16 year old is not allowed to walk with older men in Kiev.

One time I gave a 200UAH note and my change was 50UAH light. The other time I had to give a 500UAH and they "forgot" to give me a 100.

The bill was correct. I am only talking about the change. It appears most foreigners do not check bills carefully, and it's an easy scam to get away with.

Both times the waitresses did not even look at my bill when I complained. Just immediately went and brought the missing cash.

This currently Kiev number one scam, especially so with bartenders. Bring small bills and pay precise. I'm hearing about the want to be gangsters and their devious ideas to part you of your money.

I have a suggestion. If your apartment looks out onto the street, tell the girl that she should call you when she gets to a landmark, a store, a kiosk, anything that you can see directly from your apartment, and call you from there. That way, you can see just who is calling and if she is who you want and who she says she is, you can then answer, go down and meet her and this is also in a public location. The same concept applies if your apartment faces the courtyard. Have her stand somewhere that you can see her clearly.

If it is a shakedown, then while she may still call you, but if you cannot see her, then you have no need to answer the phone. If you do answer and still do not see her, then just ask her to stand where you asked her to stand. If she does not show on that spot or hangs up, then you have been saved from a possible problem. It is not a 100% foolproof but it will help, especially late at night.

All the above reason could be correct. The find day time is not so bad, but going out late at night is another story.

As I read the more and more recent reports of scams directed especially at foreigners, Kiev is off my list. Just not worth the hassle. Seems like most the regular guys who go more frequently are there for work related trips. To go there just for the girls. There are better options.

Don't want to stir things out of proportions but got a mess from a well traveled buddy on VK that had a bad experience in Kiev day before yesterday, involving an alleged student in need of gremlins and her giant militia dressed cousins, or maybe it was brothers or boyfriends. He talked himself out of it, but is paranoid now. The cat is away so take it easy with the rats.

gorgeous city, just visit for the architecture and museums, no need to spin stories like 'i am her on business'. for ee standards, a southern city with lots of greenery and an easy way of life in summer. rainy today though.

stories that kiev is not the location anymore to meet beautiful girls are plain nonsense. the fellows posting may have gotten older or may not have kept pace with inflation. anyway: scenery is varied, huge and at times stunning. mamba did not work at all for me. in touch cafe not far from arena is nice, lots of girls having fun, saw two wg that were hit upon by 2 not so bad looking foreigners but nothing materialized. fun to watch the posturing while reading a good paper. i get more kicks out of exchanging a view here and there with a regular girl than the jaded looks of the wg. all good fun. also fun to sit at arena outdoors and just watch.

security: in a nutshell, maidan is well organized by non governmental militias. partly neo fascist. lots of berets, breivik style fantasy emblems, crew cuts, very strong guys in military gear, some posing stallone style, others dacha style if you know what i mean. worn plastic slippers, military trousers, beer belly under scrubby shirt. stench of burned tire, no stench of [CodeWord109]. lots of military garb. tents, jumper boots, helmets, sticks, gas masks, wooden pallets. these campers are well equipped. they have their own security organized at maidan, non governmental. so, yes, maidan is not policed. it is a large yet well defined area, and after nightfall, when alcohol gets in the game, the security may fail. just walk quickly and distance yourselves from the paramilitaries. in the daytime, the atmosphere is great, great music, air of tragedy, so many men lost to non sensical posturing. politics of grief: oversize posters of the fallen, mostly men, mostly military garb, must have been a battle. i feel for the victims on both sides.

This story reminded of last year when I was stopped by the cops last year. When my 2 buddies arrived with the 2 girls they had just picked up in the club earlier, the cops asked I'd from everybody and turns out one of the girls was 16 thus creating even a bigger problem. The cops were going to take the 16 year old to jail and crowd formed. In the melee we were able to just walked away.

The conversation about approaching women on the street jogged my memory about a story an American colleague of mine told me over a Guinness a few weeks previous. He told me about a former colleague of his here in Kyiv who was transferred to Odessa. He said as soon as he arrived in Odessa, he checked into his flat and immediately headed to a nearby mall where he began handing out his business cards to all the young women walking by. Whether he realized it or not, he gave his business card to a sixteen year old girl. The girl went home and told her father. The father sent the man a text (pretending to be his daughter) and asked what he wanted. My buddies former colleague said he would help her with money in exchange for sex, if she was interested. The father, a big-wig in Odessa, apparently, contacted our office in Odessa and lodged a severe complaint and showed them the text message exchange. Outraged, our office sacked the man the next morning. Dude wasn't in Odessa for 24-hours and had his ass fired!

My colleague went further and told me the man was later deported out of Ukraine but for something unrelated to what happened in Odessa. No idea why he was deported but it must have been something serverly offensive.

Sex Ukraine is private. You don't hand out cards and you don't approach women on the street with offers. It's all in the eyes and subliminal messages.
