Something like this also happened to me in Bucharest, Romania, in 2004, when I was still a novice. I let a girl come into my apartment and said no thanks. When I opened my door to let her out, two local thugs pretending to be police officers stormed into my apartment! Not realizing that they were fake cops, I ended up giving them something like 200 USD.

So it's amazing to me what you did with a knife. Did you have your door locked from inside when this was all happening? So while grabbing the girl inside of your apartment, you yelled at the thugs in the hallway? Is this what was happening? I just want to picture exactly what happened.

I never displayed or mentioned the knife. It was hidden away and for use if the shit hit the fan. The door was locked from the inside with a key, no latch. All it took was dragging the girl to the door and having her, in addition to myself, tell the guys to leave the building. I'm no tough guy, but grabbing her hair gave notice people were going to get hurt.

Generally speaking, it's just money and who cares, I will make more. None the less, you still have to make judgement calls on the situation. Five gangsters walk up to you on the street and demand your wallet, just give it up. Two thugs get potential access to your apartment in a foreign country, well you better take control and be prepared while you can.

Also, I want to add that you should lock your apartment door from the inside and have a nice big knife at hand. I had something like that happen to me in Romania. First thing you got to do is ascert yourself. I grabbed the girls hair and dragged her to the door and told the guys leave the building or I would smash the girls head against the door. Moefoes ran like little pussies. It's amazing the fear that a mid aged man can instill in young punks with every thing to loose.

I like that, as it comes closer to the situation during my first vist to UA. 1996. Hopefully, the cost of girls will do that, too.

There is an unusual amount of discussion of scams and other security issues here, but maybe it is not so unusual.

In my experience, Kiev is a pretty safe place if you are not being stupid. As for bad guys, they usually have bigger fish to fry.

But like in any crisis situation, even a severe storm, people think the normal rules do not apply and their behaviour changes.

Formerly submissive taxi drivers, usually happy just to cheat you on the fare, now wonder if they can actually rob you instead.

Drunken gopniks, formerly content just to drink away their sorrows, now act on their bottle up rage and threaten foreigners.

It will cool down again, but until then we have to be aware that the old rules may have changed and anything can happen!

I will be in Kiev next week and will find out for myself!

the conversation about approaching women on the street jogged my memory about a story an american colleague of mine told me over a guinness a few weeks previous. he told me about a former colleague of his here in kyiv who was transferred to odessa. he said as soon as he arrived in odessa, he checked into his flat and immediately headed to a nearby mall where he began handing out his business cards to all the young women walking by. whether he realized it or not, he gave his business card to a sixteen year old girl. the girl went home and told her father. the father sent the man a text (pretending to be his daughter) and asked what he wanted. my buddies former colleague said he would help her with money in exchange for sex, if she was interested. the father, a big-wig in odessa, apparently, contacted our office in odessa and lodged a severe complaint and showed them the text message exchange. outraged, our office sacked the man the next morning. dude wasn't in odessa for 24-hours and had his ass fired!

my colleague went further and told me the man was later deported out of ukraine but for something unrelated to what happened in odessa. no idea why he was deported but it must have been something serverly offensive.

Not personally interested in 16 year old, but I found it hard to believe that a 16 year old is not allowed to walk with older men in Kiev.

Sex with a 16yr old is legal in most countries.

But paying for sex with a 16 yr old is illegal in most countries.

I just think its awesome that, even with all that's going on in the Ukraine, that punters are still out trying to get action. This is not a critcism, just a chuckling acknowledgement. I can understand why. In my opinon, Ukranian women are among the most beautiful in the world, right up there with French-Canadian and Japanese. Its a shame that the wellspring, including Kiev and Odessa, could be in turmoil soon. Pity I probably never shall be able to see it unspoilt. Ukraine will not explode. It is the penniless heavies that make the trouble. But on a wider scale nobody wants war. You are right about Ukraine's crown jewels, the pretty pretty girls. If you have got no game, go to Dolls Mens Club on Chernoarmiskaya. I have been there a while ago. The place has a cover charge of ca. 14 EUR, which is waived if you take a girl to your apartment. Taxi drivers always scam. Outrageous charges if you do not fix the price beforehand. Ask them for the fare. They will ask back what you are willing to pay. Then I count to three (in Russian) gesticulating with my fingers, turn around and walk. Then the taxi driver will throw a number at you, which often is acceptable.

Darkish figure tried to sell me football tickets. Likely a scammer. Got a distance between him and me quickly.

It may be better to wait outside, as someone else suggested below, and check the whole scene. For this purpose there is a good apartment I know of, with a nice cafe right across the street, but it is not in the center.

As I said, it is not 100% foolproof. But again, you assume the guys are smart. Don't. When they set this up, they expect you to be the idiot, not them. They are thugs and they don't have the brains to figure out that YOU may be watching THEM. If you use a public well-lit location that can be seen from your apartment, the advantage is all yours.

When she makes the call, if she is not there but two thugs, end of story. It is up to you to decide what and how you want to do depending on your location and view. In your case, what I suggested may be a lot of garbage, but maybe for others, it can save someone's ass.

In these uncertain times, the only thing I can say is for someone to use their apartment or location to their strategic advantage. If you choose to be a victim, then that is your choice.

Man, you guys should get out Ukraine. With the election later this month, from what I can tell on CNN, the country is going to explode. Maybe you know better, since you are on the ground, but it doesn't look good from here. Desperate times make people desperate, and nobody is a better target than a gringo with US dollars and access to them. Donations from the US and Russian governments is the only thing keeping the Ukraine afloat now.

A move like that would be extremely rare in Ukraine. Most thugs just want to intimidate and have no intention of hurting anybody or getting themselves hurt. Entering a building amplifies their personnel danger 10 fold.

All the above reason could be correct. The find day time is not so bad, but going out late at night is another story.

As I read the more and more recent reports of scams directed especially at foreigners, Kiev is off my list. Just not worth the hassle. Seems like most the regular guys who go more frequently are there for work related trips. To go there just for the girls. There are better options.

I have to wonder what to do in today's climate in Kiev.

I don't have a business in Kiev but have a half-time girlfriend. If I go there, I would like to hang with other girls as well.
