Looking back a few posts I saw a few posters describing this as a hidden gem and an alternative to AC.
I went to Subic to get away from some of the crazies hassling me at AC and wanted to get out of town. One of them texted me on the morning of my departure warning me not to go as the titties were smaller and girls were uglier out that way. It didn't take long for me to realise she had a point.
There were fewer bars (and the bars seemed smaller (there were no big bars there). I am generally picky and had been to several bars and was disappointed with the quality. I was ready to give up when I went to the bar at the bottom of my hotel (rascals) for a last drink. Found a 24 YO who was a little drunk and all over me. She said it was her first week there, and I believe her. I managed to get a BBBJ in the club after 1 DLD while the dancers were watching me from stage. Didn't take long for me to pay the 1500 p and go upstairs.
She turned out to be my favorite barfine of the whole trip. Kept her for 3 days. Wasn't hassled by friends / cousins / sisters. She gave me her full attention. And was most accommodating.
Other than that everything seemed cheaper in Subic. From drinks to barfines to shopping. Also much less beggars and street vendors. The beach was okay but not much compared to what can be seen elsewhere.
Swagmans had a minibus going there for 500 p from Angeles.

Posts: 178I just got back from Subic, stayed at the Pub hotel as the location was in the center of the action and rated reasonably well on tripadvisor.
The room was nice and had air conditioning. I did have to walk 2 flights of stairs to get to my room and there was no elevator. Wasn't a big issue when I was following my barfines ass up those stairs.
The odd thing about this place was that you had to keep handing your key back to reception every time you left the room. It had a room safe and nothing was stolen, however, I've never had to do this before.
I was also unfortunate enough to stay there during a 12-hour power outage. The taps don't work during the outage and without any fans or aircon, you get sweaty and smelly quickly. They did get generators a couple of times during the day and I eventually showered but it wasn't the most pleasant of days and I was very tired by night time.
Whilst I wouldn't mind staying there again, I'd probably try somewhere else out if I visit again.

Posts: 3262thoughts on Mangrove or Court Meridian Hotels
I am going to Subic for the first time in June for 3 nights. I would like a nice hotel with a non-smoking room. I also may be bringing a couple of girls from AC and am wondering if that would be any issues with the hotel. Thanks for your information on this.

Just in case nobody's mentioned it here yet, the new iCove along the strip in BB is pretty decent. Kind of basic rooms but comfy, and brand new, and cheaper than you might expect from the lobby.

Posts: 887Observations of Barrio Barretto from Last Week
- Many/most barfines/tips seem to be 1500 pesos.
- Note my reviews are from Tuesday to Thursday. The bars get busy on the weekends.
- A few years ago, I thought the best overall bar was the Wet Spot. What happened? The bar moved. It was semi-dead. Alaska is now at the old location of the Wet Spot. It was also semi-dead.
- Overall, I thought the best bar was Lollipop.

the lowest price room, which faces the street, is 2950 pesos (price you get from their website or the walk-in price; slightly cheaper than agoda).
decent bed, great pillows, clean, decent wood furniture/trim, large tv, inroom safe, nice pool, nice view from the pool area, and easy access to barrio barretto (with trike or a short walk).
cons: bathroom could be better. shower drain wasn't good. wi-fi was shitty; it was spotty and/or bad.
read the reviews on tripadvisor. the score would be better if you ignore the ones that gave bad reviews because it was in a sleazy area (no shit!)

food was a bit pricey, but there are plenty of other options like the blue rock, (btw, rooms there weren't too nice though). both have floating bars which can be fun, blue rock's is considerably larger.
one word of caution if you do stay there, watch when you're walking around the bed. it's on a concrete pedestal and you're likely to bang your toe or foot into it; painful as all hell. i think everyone who has ever stayed there, including me, has done it at least once, lol.

Posts: 169sometimes being on a $50 budget you have to accept blue walls. tomo and gavin run a 1st class operation at the arizona. i wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in subic.

Posts: 156anyone tried mangrove hotel? a search returned no results. i did email them and confirmed they are gf. just want to know the actual feedback from a fellow monger who has stayed there.
at$62, slightly out of my $50 budget but the shocking blue walls of arizona and other places make me sick. i am looking for something with a bit more elegant subtle and laidback decor. besides i like to practice portrait photography with the bar gals and i dont want a brothel look in my pics.
thanks.
