I've used the 7 day visa to enter Batam and leave through Semarang and Surabaya. At Batam you present the officers with the correct amount of money in US $ and they issue the visa without question. I think it's 9 years since the last rise in visa prices so can't really complain. Wish the price for P&P hadn't risen in 9 years.

Fair enough, then again anyone who has spend some time in Indonesia knows that with some money nearly everything is possible.

Brand new to your forum here so thought I would post a quick introduction before jumping in.

I am an older guy from the you S living in Thailand for the last few years. I don't live in BKK but get there on a regular basis for a bit of enjoyment.

Posting here instead of the BKK forum as I am planning a trip to Indonesia in a couple of months and am sure I will have some questions as the time gets closer.

I know the proper etiquette says to post a couple of trip reports before asking specific questions. However having never been to Indonesia no reports to post but can post a bit about.

Yes you should post in the BKK forum. At least get something down. Incidentally most of us are older guys, although that is a very subjective term. I'm 50 to give you a benchmark.

I'm not sure where the Globe got that info, but the only visa-on-arrival option is 30 days for US $35. I just sent a consultant through the process. The seven-day option may exist but the enterprising Immigration officials may just be ignoring it. Why sell something for $15 when you can collect $35? TTG.

The USD 15 (until recently USD 10) s / t visa is only available for certain locations such as Bintan or Batam Islands. For Jakarta and Bali you need to bite the bullet and buy the 30 day one.

Are you sure the 15 days visa is still being offer I have a US passport and I been to Jarkata twice the last 10 month the 15 days visa is not offer anymore only 30 days is avalible at the airport.

the immigration can and will turn you back on those grounds if they are suspicious that you are working.

I've been turned away myself after doing the visa run thing 5 months in a row with the normal Visa-on-Arrival + 30-day extension. It's worth noting though that I am still in my early 20s and they may have a bigger reason to suspect I am working than a 50 year old.

Some guys go from one country to another to evade this issue. But I like to keep my base in one country only.

Fortunately I did find an agent in Jakarta who got me a bogus KITAS with 12 months validity renewable once every year and I've not had any trouble with the immigration guys since then. It's not cheap though but it gives me peace of mind I won't be refused entry.

It must always be remembered that a VOA cannot be extended under any circumstances. Before it expires, you must leave the country. Many people wanting to extend their visit to Indonesia simply get a cheap flight to Singapore and return to Indonesia often on the same day. There is no problem with Indonesian immigration authorities with you doing this, as long as they do not suspect that you are illegally working here.

Thanks for posting this for the guys. However VOA's are easily and legally extendable, for another 30 days. A couple of things to take care of. Start the process about 10 days before it expires. Cost is 25 USD.

It involves 2-3 trips to the immigration office so easier to pay a bit more and use an agent thus more time for mongering.

In Bali you can often extend illegally for another month depending on your agent but cost rises.

Also another possible trap, if you are doing the one day turn around you should hold an onward ticket back out because the immigration can and will turn you back on those grounds if they are suspicious that you are working.

Most excellent summary Pete, thanks for offering the info. One final comment on the VOA.

Garuda now offers VOA as an in-plane service on its popular international routes. I think SYD-DPS, SYD-CGK, Tokyo-CGK etc.

All this does is saves you the line-up time at the airport, so saves an hour sometimes, an hour that could be better used for other purposes of course.

Before I got my Kitas I flew Garuda purely for this purpose (well plus the hostesses are much better than Qantas old ugly women).

This might help short-stay tourist mongers, makes immigration a breeze when you arrive.

Among the most frustrating issues for foreigners of living in Indonesia are the obtaining and maintaining of visas and work permits.

The amount of red tape and bureaucracy in involved in obtaining certain of these visas can be quite extraordinary.

These are the most common types of visas currently available in Indonesia:

&9702; Visa-On-Arrival (VOA)

&9702; Tourist Visa

&9702; Single Entry Social Visa (Sosbud)

&9702; Single Entry Business Visa (Business)

&9702; Multiple Entry Social Visa (MESV)

Other specialised visas for diplomatic staff, NGOs, journalists and artists are also available.

All of these visas have their own special requirements, however common to all of them is the requirement that passports have at least six month's validity past the expiry of the issued visa. Thus, a 12-month Temporary Residence Visa would require a validity of at least 18 months at the time of application.

Also, tourists from any country wanting to stay in Indonesia for longer than allowed by the VOA may also wish to consider this type of visa.

Single Entry Social Visa (Sosbud)

The Social Visa, or what was formally known in Indonesia as a sosial-budaya (social-cultural) visa, or sosbud, is issued for the purposes of:

Single Entry Business Visa (Business)

Business visas are issued for the following purposes:

Multiple Entry Social Visa (MESV)

Although Multiple Entry Social Visas are a theoretical possibility under current regulations, in the past year the immigration has made obtaining such visas difficult or impossible.

Normally, they are valid for 12 months from the date of issuance at the embassy, and are for visits of a maximum 60 days duration.

Visas such as these must be processed by the Immigration Office in Jakarta. Once processed. Usually taking three to five working days. A "telex" of the visa approval letter is sent to the Indonesian embassy where you wish to pick up the visa. You then take a copy of the telex, your passport and passport photos to the Indonesian embassy on the approval letter, where the pre-approved visa will be stamped into the passport. This process can take up to three working days, and from the Embassy varies from US$100 to US$150.

Multiple Entry Business Visa (MEBV)

Multiple Entry Business Visa (MEBV) are commonly used by people backwards and forwards doing business in Indonesia. It is strongly stressed that the MEBV does not entitle you to work in Indonesia. The term "work" is defined very broadly by immigration officials, thus great care should be taken when describing your activities while here. The word "work" should be temporarily expunged from your vocabulary.

MEBV are valid for 12 months from the date of issuance at the embassy, and are for visits of maximum 60 days duration.

Indonesia is now making a push to standardise prices, the Sharia police have recently been tasked with enforcing this.

Presidential decree number 46097/225 last week stated that bules, local's, Chinese, korean's and germans must now pay the gazetted PSK (sex worker) price of 450 000 per pop. Regardless of location in Indonesia. According to the Economists at the Sharia ministry, this should introduce 900 billion rupiah of new money to the economy next year.

So If papasan or mamasan or that winsome looking girl in CJ's are quoting you some astronomical bule price. You just look for the nearest police post and they will be able to assist you with this. Just look for the green PSK priceaware sticker on the window that the ministry has printed up. It looks a little bit like a penis with a question mark around it.

Unfortunately the economists just did another study and found that the injection of new money into the country will leave just as quickly as the girls buy new mobile phones and other assorted electronic devices. They are now suggesting that the amount be paid by purchasing local Indonesian goods as oleh oleh plus a balance as real taxi money. Oleh oleh in the form of imported goods will be deemed an incomplete and illegal transaction, even if accepted by the girls.
