HIV Elisa tests may have about a 5% false positive rate (95% specific after 6 weeks of infection). Thus, there is a chance the Carlos Collazos has not contracted the HIV virus. Unfortunately, this also means that a second test - still - has a greater likelihood of also being positive. After a positive ELISA test, it is important to undergo a follow-up Western Blot test (not ELISA), which, when combined with ELISA, is > 99.99% specific.

Has he seen a counselor for this? If not, he needs to see one. Is he truly a "doctor"? In addition, if his Western Blot is also positive, he does have HIV and should immediately obtain a CD4 count in order to determine the status of his HIV. More importantly, he needs to start on 2 nucleoside analogs (ie. AZT/retrovir/zidovudine and 3TC/epivir/lamivudine - a combination is commercially known at Combivir) and 1 protease inhibitor (ie. nelfinavir/viracept).

I am sorry that this has occured to him, and I sincerely hope that he gets the appropriate medical attention - ASAP. With treatment, he will live much longer (and more comfortably) than without treatment.


For those interested, here are the current "known" rates of transmission of HIV (in brief):

1:100 to 1:30 - for receptive, unprotected anal intercourse
1:1000 - for insertive, unprotected anal intercourse
1:1000 - for insertive, unprotected vaginal intercourse
1:10,000 - for receptive, insertive, unprotected vaginal intercourse
1:1000 - for receptive fellatio with ejaculation
very low/unknown - for receptive fellatio without ejaculation, insertive fellatio, cunninlingus

The odds are low, but there is always a life-changing chance. It's the 'chance' that we all take.

Yeah, they get a lot of false positives with the eslisa (sp?) test, so have to have a westin blot. Bet you it comes out negative. (At least I hope so)

Probably not circumsized....greater chance of catching it. The probabity of catching it having intercourse with an infected girl is about 6%. From a blow job, almost impossible.
