I did a quick 3 day trip to San Jose.

Arrived around noon and hotel was Morazan. Girlfriendly. Room Basic. Got it for $50 a night. I like this hotel because of location. Half a block to Del Ray.

Around the corner there is a massage place. 2 Girl massage cost $40.1 Hour. No extras although they would have done it. Went to Del Ray and picking were slim. All fuglies and old. Picked one reasonably young one, negotiated $50ST and back to the room. It was OK just to get the edge off. Done in half hour and she leaves. Some more gambling downstairs, made some money and room for a nap. Nice nap. Back to Del Ray in the evening. Girls were little better but not much. What happened to all Colombians I used to see?

Majority were local ticas. Some drinking, some gambling, some eating to while away the time. Got a girl (see Pic) . Very nice 31 year old, slightly chubby. Very good service, likes anal and very horny. She said she was horny because no sex for a week. Cannot imagine why one week is a big deal because some girls go whole year without sex. Did not find many young 18-23 year olds. Most were past their prime. Hard to find Nicaraguans, Panamaniams, Colombians coming to make some money. Economy must have improved. Somebody said it is better in Jaco. They also said girls are afraid of immigration check in San Jose.

Gringo Gulch probably comprises from about Calle 3 to Calle 11 and Avenida 1 to Avenida 13 but it's really more of a mental concept than a defined area. Mónica's is a pretty healthy walk from Hotel Del Rey, maybe about 20 blocks. Taxis are all metered and you can't spend much more than $5-$10 for a ride within the city. You can also take a bus for about 60 cents. That is what I do.

You will probably want to consider this, because that hotel is not even in the city of San José; it is in Escazú. Do note that there are numerous hotels around the Del Rey that DO rent short term rooms, if you want to go that route.

Hi guys. I get my first opportunity to come to San Jose, on business, July 31 and Aug 1. I arrive late in the day, and am a bit hesitant about venturing out at night. I'm not sure if my coworker is a monger too. I'll be staying at the Intercontinental, I guess it's by something called the multiplaza. I'm pretty sure it isn't tica friendly and it looks like the closest places to the hotel are M&S girls, Masaje Tantra and Athena 101. Any info on those places would be appreciated. Also reading back quite a way in the forum, I still can't figure out where Gringo Gulch is located exactly. I have recommendations for Pension Monica's, The Pantera Rosa, and LE Grillion strip clubs.

Also I'd like info on taxi rates. I really don't want to spend $50 dollars in taxi rides for a $40 dollar BJ.

I assume by reading the forum that HDR doesn't rent short time rooms, however, it does sound like a great spot to grab a beer and check out the scenery. So I guess my plan would be to take a cab on Saturday afternoon to the HDR, then walk to Monica's unless the places closer to my hotel are just as reliable.

There are a lot of choices for you in San Jose if you want to step away from the usual spots for gringos. Bring a pair of broken in sneakers with a lot of tread left and do some walking. For me that's half the fun.

You can start with this public Google Map that two gentleman were industrious and kind enough to create. Then ask questions if you like. I'd be happy to weigh in some and I'm sure others will as well.

The more English they speak, the worse service they give. Relatively more English speaking chicas hang out at both Del Rey and Sportsman's than in almost any other place. Therefore, the service in those two places tends to be the worst in town. But, if you don't speak much Spanish, you won't ever find out how much better the service can be in other places. That is why many people who can't speak much Spanish prefer those two places, and often have a good time there.

Pension 360 ripoff earlier this month.

I speak of the two story tan building in Paseo Colon a few blocks in behind the Toyota dealership. And for anyone who'the defend the place claiming they've had no bad experiences there, let me say that I could have said the same thing up until my latest experience. It's entirely up to you if you want to patronize them. I won't again and here's why.

Also while on vacation I uploaded a report about this in Spanish to the main Tico forum, "the foro" as it is often called by gringos. Yet two hours later it was deleted and my username was permanently banned. I was not at all surprised because I knew in advance that Pupys is an administrator and constant poster in the adult section of that forum. It's obvious that he abused his authority to protect his business interests.

He refused to discuss the matter face to face or in his forum even in his own language because he knew as well as me that the demand was ridiculous. And it's clear that supporting the girl's silliness was more important to him than my business or others that I may share my experience with. His choice. Other choices abound.

I called the deal off and she called down the stairs for one of the managers, Pupys. I'm BTW very familiar with both managers, Pupys and Chino. They had seen my face for years and I had spent a lot of cash there. Anyway the girl demanded a 5 mil payment because in the room before things went sour I momentarily saw her stripped down to her panties. Yes, I'm serious. LOL To quote Pupys, "because you saw her naked. ".

And management supported her in the nonsense. Both Pupys and Chino were in house. I tried to reason with both but there was no communication. They just recited over and over a canned response to anything I said, "cinco mil for the lady" even though both can handle a good amount of English. Had it been some real money I might have refused to pay and headed for the door, but as it was I just gave up the 5 mil and told them I would not be back.

Sorry I didn't mean to sound disrespectful to your post like that. That's great that you've been to CR many times and knows the place inside out and haven't got problem in too many places. I have not been to the strip club in CR yet but I have heard from friends and other reviews that recommended not to go in a certain strip clubs cause it is a danger trap especially when ordering drinks and that they can mess with your bill afterward at gun point and expect for a crazy amount of money before they let you leave. I haven't been to CR as much so I'm kinda new and don't have the right to say a lot so I do apologize for that. However, I have been to other Latin countries. And I think CR is a good place, I had my first experience there 2 weeks ago and planning to going back again so I think this is a good resource to learn from and great posts like yours. Anyway, in the future if I'm planning to hit up the strip clubs joint, would you recommend just enjoy the girls and don't order drink just to stay away from their trap on the bill?

No problem! I am far from an expert on San Jose strip clubs, by the way. The only other times I have even sessioned at a San Jose strip club was back when Club Kamur was around, 7 or 8 years ago, when I really was a newbie. They had some really hot dancers, including the famous CRT tica of the month Roxanna, whom I still have fond memories of. What ruined my enthusiasm for the place was that they began charging $13 or so for "premium" ladies drinks without telling you up front, when the price had normally been $8. A really dumb business move that pissed a lot of people off. I never bought more than one ladies drink a night anyway, but it was the principal behind it all. In the more recent past, I've hit LeGrillon and Pantera Rosa a couple of times each with friends but did not partake and can't remember the pricing. I do remember being much more impressed with Pantera Rosa as opposed to the dumpy LeGrillon.

The main rule to remember is: Never run a tab! Pay for the drinks one round at a time as soon as they arrive. The story you heard re messing with the bill at gunpoint is true, I believe, but I can't remember the club in question and it is hardly the norm. Padding the bill might be much more common for those who run a tab, I just don't know for sure. What I like about Alcazar is that they give you two beer tokens (or three for tequila shots) right when you arrive at the door that you have already paid for, as part of the cover. No bill comes with these drinks, and I don't normally desire more than two drinks anyway. I broke this rule my last night in town when I sessioned twice at Alcazar, with Rachel and Arianna. The additional beers (& bottled water) were 2,500 colones each. As a rule, I don't spring for the ladies drinks or table encounters. It's either la habitacion o nada!

I've sessioned with Del Rey and Sportsmens Lodge chicas dozens of times, and I've probably experienced over a 100 MP visits over this time as well. I've also been lucky enough to dally with more "normal" semi-pros introduced to me by people who actually live here. The strip club scene is just one more option that I occasionally enjoy partaking of. I never mess with strip clubs in the USA. What I like about them here is that you can actually bang a hot dancer on site literally minutes after taking a fancy to her. I spent less than a $100.00 per evening on my recent visits to Alcazar and had a good time.

I'd suggest you learn some manners and learn how to actually construct a useful post.

I've also been lucky enough to dally with more "normal" semi-pros introduced to me by people who actually live here. The strip club scene is just one more option that I occasionally enjoy partaking of. I never mess with strip clubs in the USA. What I like about them here is that you can actually bang a hot dancer on site literally minutes after taking a fancy to her. I spent less than a $100.00 per evening on my recent visits to Alcazar and had a good time.

Mr Jetsetter is correct. Pantera Legrilion and Alcazar. Are good options. Tango is well known as rip off. Did not scroll very far back but don't see mention of the shows found at these places. About midnight or so at least weekend nights. Involving toys and customers on stage whose "toy" gets used.

Why would you want to CR to go strip club anyway. Never heard of cases they would hold you at gunpoint until you pay whatever were charge on your tap even through you didn't ordered. I've been to Alcazar twice in the last few weeks, and I highly recommend it. My rating: two erect thumbs up. Simply take a taxi to and from, and you have absolutely nothing to worry about safety-wise.nt.

Thanks for the recommendations as to time and safety. For some reason, the pensions and hotels seem to get the lion's share of attention. I wonder why the strip clubs aren't more widely reviewed.

Your report and Tiger's make me think there are alternatives out there I haven't considered.
