I love Kiev. I plan to return as soon as it normalizes. It's a complex scene.

Their is no thread on ISG more full of propaganda than Kiev thread. It would have gone dead like the other EE cities if it were not for all the nightlife venues geared towards Westerners.

Do we really need referrals to Russian propaganda on this website too? This Russian run site funny enough do not mentioned about the fall in ranking of St. Peterburg and Moscow.

The downside of renting apartment in Kiev is that during your stay, the apartment can be WITHOUT WATER for a day or two.

If this happens, your apartment basically becomes useless for incalls / mongering.

My apartment has no water and I am right on Kreshschatyk!

Apparently this happens every now and then and quite frequently even in the upscale areas on and around Kreshschatyk.

This will never happen in a hotel.

Hahahahaha, great comparison. I loved it! But first of all I really appreciate your post, thanks a lot! However I actually do not consider Kiev traffic a major issue for me since I have driven I Kiev before and in even worst places like Santo Domingo and Nairobi as well as Moscow. Regarding parking Paris taught me to be quite "creative". Anyway thank you for the heads up!

Regarding taxis, I always had some uncertainty. Perhaps it's me but I had a quite a lot of bad experience also in western countries as well in my own home town. I always feel a little bit out of control and especially during night time. There is usually no problem if you are going to an address but the return home I sometimes find myself in an unknown area during late night. And my "famous luck" always arrange for absolutely no taxi for hours. In this perceptive I also imagine a bit unsafe for a girl to get her "favorite cabbi" feels a bit hazardous since she could call four big guys with nice metal bats. But perhaps it is just me but this is the way my thoughts are going.

Regarding finding trustworthy cabbie and have him show me the beauties and help finding a fair price and avoiding usual traps, but also show you some hidden locations, I would really appreciate tips on both hidden locations as well backyard brothels. A PM would be fantastic!

I am going to Kiev in about a week and besides renting a flat I have rented a car.

Bad idea. Kiew trafic is terrible. At least if you'are not used to local customs AND the area. Also parking in the inner city is not really easy. Unless you're fluent in Russian. Think of it like a combination of NYC space, Istanbul habits and Westen Baltimore security.

And frankly, you don't need it. During daytime public transit is great, all other times, take a cab. The only time I found a car useful is for a visit on the country side, and even for such occasions, ask the girl of the hour, she will have some friend willing to move you around the whole day for a rather low amount of money plus dinner.

My ambitions are to pick up girls in different areas and bring them back to my place.

That's what taxis are for. Every girl has her own preferred cabbie, and numbers of trustworthy agencies.

If you're thinking of picking street walkers, are you sure you even recognize them in time, while driving _and_ be able to negotiate in time?

Now, if you really like the thrill, find a trustworthy cabbie and have him show you the beauties and help finding a fair price. He will not only find the ones while avoiding usual traps, but also show you some hidden locations, you wouldn't even think of turning into otherwise. Not to mention all the backyard brothels in living areas like left beach.

Ten years ago, everything centered around Kiev and foreigners. Now, they are connected to the world. Kiev is still a pussy paradise, but you have to have friends. Few Westerners would want to embrace that culture and deal with the isolation.

I've lived and worked in Kyiv for a combined 18 months now. I've lived and hung out not only in the centre, but also in places that tourist never go to, like Shuliavska and Akademmistechko. I can honestly say nothing has ever happened to me. Not once. I've even walked around at 2 and 3 am.

Of course there is crime in Kyiv, as in all major cities. However, I don't think Kyiv is anymore dangerous than anywhere else. Most crimes committed are against opportune targets, like the gentleman walking home intoxicated from Ugly Coyote (I actually live 2-minutes from this club and have never had a problem as it's a well-to-do area). You can always get a taxi in Kyiv, just ask the staff at the restaurant or club to help you call one.

Yes, the economy in Ukraine is terrible right now. Times are tough. However, if you take some small precautions, you shouldn't experience any problems.

I was in Kiev about 6 months ago for a 3 days business trip. Something similar happened to me twice. I was at Coyote Ugly Bar, it was pretty late and I was very drunk. When I left the bar, I couldn't find a Taxi right away, so I walked a bit trying to find a Taxi. About 4-5 young guys followed me from the Bar and about 50 meter later they threatened me with knives. It was the first time something like this ever happened to me in Kiev and elsewhere. (I was in Brazil in the Favelas, at 4 am in Harlem, walked in some nasty places in Bangkok, Egypt, Ethiopia and some dangerous places I don't even remember.) I gave them all the money I had in my wallet, but they wanted also to search me and take my watch. I defended myself, pushed them away and yelled at them so they left. I am a big guy in the late 40's. But me being very drunk must encouraged them to attack me.

One day later, I was out with my Ukrainian business partner, I stayed at a flat in Krishiatek close to Arena. The entrance of the building was at the backside. So some guys followed me from the main street. I noticed this and walked faster with my Keys in my hand and ran the last 5-10 meters, opened the door to the building and was just fast enough to close the Building door without letting them in. So be careful out there, poverty in Ukraine increased and so also criminality..
