Check any good websites for ingredients of Tom Yam. You will not find coconut milk. I assumed that people noticed Tom Yam never tastes of coconut at all.

As BionicMan points out Tom Kha Gai is a different type of soup (Chicken Galangal soup). It does have coconut milk in it.

That is funny, because when I was in Berlin last year, I visited a longtime Bengali friend. I noted the abundance of Indian, Thai and Mexican restaurants and he commented that none of them were good. They all served bland food, because as he explained, "The Germans don't like spice. Sorry to divert from the Bangkok thread, but I suggest for real Thai food, you really have to get it in Thailand, or perhaps fluke someone who really knew how to cook Thai food and is not changing it drastically for the local preference. So called Authentic Thai food is very difficult to find OS, especially Germany, but I have found the odd passable to good restaurant. Its quite possible to get very bad inedible Phat Thai even in Bangkok, where the "chef" is not experienced and wrong ingredients are used.

This was last weekend, I didn't have a chance to sit down and write this as I was traveling around a lot.

My understanding is that coconut milk is used in quite some soups. Tom ka ga, for instance, a much milder soup vs. The over spicy Tom Young one. This is why it is never much recommended to farang not used to it. It might give some side effects you don't want to have during a mongering night.
