I am European guy, 35 year old, I've been living in Shanghai for over one year now, and had some mixed experiences here.

Sacrosa (now closed): IMO one of the best places at a reasonable price. They were charging 600 RMB before 6 pm, and the best option was to go around 14 or 15 pm during weekdays. Selection was not huge, but the place was nice, and there were some very nice lady too. The first time I went there (about nine months ago) I probably had the best girl. I came another two-three times but never had such a great experience again, however the girls were always very nice.

Both Dongguan and Red House are legit. They are in the upper end of spectrum so be prepared to pay a little more.

Prices are made absolutely clear and you pay after the service. Or were you ripped off by one of the touts along Nanjin Road? Read through this board and you'll come across pages of posts that scream to avoid these touts at all cost.

Shanghai caters to all budget and taste, from the RMB500+ lower end saunas (lower if you go for the barber shops) to RMB3000+ models. You just have to know where to look for them. Read up and PM some of the regulars if you need help.

Lots of scams in China. I have been there enough over the years to have "friends" that take care of me when I visit China now. But before I got to this point I got scammed a few times myself. Met a European guy in a bar in Beijing one night that talked me into going to this other bar with lots of beautiful women. Turned out to be a KTV and I got stuck with a $1500 US bar tab. Not easy to get around Shanghai without Chinese or local knowledge. Shanghai Nightlife Guide used to be a decent resource but it's no longer kept up to date. I've tried and enjoyed both saunas you mention but not in the past 6 months.
