And if nature is going to invest in any behavior at all, behaviors having to do with mating strategies are going to be near or at the top of the list. Nothing is more important to evolution than reproduction. So if evolution can create behaviors at all, sexual behaviors are sure to be impacted.

From the point of view of genetic competition men and women have nearly opposite optimal strategies for genetic proliferation into the next generation. The optimal strategy for males is to have as many partners as possible, and to spread their genes far and wide. Sperm are cheap, and once implanted need little further attention from the male. For females, however, every sexual encounter is a major investment of potential resources. Once pregnant other options are eliminated. Human females can have about one child per year, and so picking the right partner, and shunning others, is absolutely critical.

So if evolution can form behavior at all, it makes perfectly good sense that men would tend to play offense and maximize partners, and women would tend to play defense and minimize partners. And indeed that is what is mostly found around the world regardless of the particular culture at play.

So yes, of course women find prostitution difficult. They have to overcome their innate, hardwired, behavioral tendency to not act promiscuously.
