I'm in Havana right now. I've been here for 2 days now. I went to fantasy on a Monday and it was full with working girls. They were coming up to me left and right. I'm not saying it hasn't but we are relying mostly on the Chica grapevine which has been known to exaggerate.

In my opinion the law changed many years ago. The cat and mouse game with jineteras has come to embody the "dollar mentality" that the Cuban government perceives as a threat. Their ethic of consumption, entrepreneurship, and autonomy is perceived as capitalism. The Cuban government doesn't want capitalism, but it needs our money and tourism dollars. When Fidel experimented many years ago and did not bother the jineteras, tourism from Europe and Canada skyrocketed; isn't this ironic. They want the jineteras to create revenue for the revolution but not for themselves. For the revolution, "sacrifice" is a key buzzword. This is the problem here and why the pressure is on the girls. They won't harass you if you prove she is your girlfriend though.

I don't want to get philosophical by any means but so long as Cuba remains a hardline communist country, working girls will always be harassed, controlled, and some will be made examples of, its just a reality. With that being said, I do not think they are enforcing the laws as much, but certainly they are "trying to slowly tighten the noose "on the chicas in Havana. One of the girls from my last trip confirmed this, and while I was there most of the girls at Mangos were scared of the threat of police (sure enough it was shut down ) , and St. Johns realized the same fate. The law has indeed changed. A tourist can be fined thousands of dollars for participating in prostitution. If you are busted with a chica and can show you had ongoing contact with her, you'll probably be let off the hook. If she is checked in with out and shown in casa registries most of the days of your trip, you should be OK. Having a "puta" in Cuba is a bad idea. Having a girlfriend or mistress is A-OK. To be on the safe side, use a taxi and don't be seen walking on the street with her.

If a chica is going to be with me on my terms, she deserves the good stuff. One even had the nerve to email and ask for a specific brand of perfume when she knew I was on my way to Santa Clara. In the past, I have visited Santa Clara for three days. It was a weird place. When I walked the streets I always got a creepy feeling. No one would smile or say Hola!

You are absolutely correct; sounds like it is the new President who has stated he will push for 30 years sentences and although they may not enforce the law to this extent; it certainly has the girls scared. We were going to return to Cuba and now we are headed to Panama and Medellin instead. This is absolutely horrible news for us.

For a trip to Cuba through Trinidad and Viales, in which city is it easier to enjoy the company of a Cuban chick?

I am sure that you cannot come across these services in Cayo Santa Mara, where you could also spend a couple of days, as it has isolated hotels without any people nearby, right?

When I was in Havana back in February, my Cuban girlfriend told me that there was a big crack down on the chicas. The new El Presidente Miguel theaz-Canel is a hard liner commie and he has targeted any free market action.

She also stated that very few girls are traveling to Havana from other parts of Cuba like they have in the past. The new El Presidente has enforced the law, and carry's a 30 year prison sentence, no chance of parole. 30 hard years in prison for these poor girls. This guy sounds worse than the Castros.

Santa Clara and Holguin. As I have said in previous posts, the Cuban authorities consider a girlfriend or mistress one thing (legal) and a prostitute another illegal thing. Cubans are so wretchedly poor. A non-pro chica can be had for about the same price as a puta. The non-pros want plausible deniability to being considered prostitutes. This means getting them clothes, a load of groceries for their family, low end cell phones, etc should be substituted for cash. Tell the chica that you are on a "vacation budget" to signal what you're willing to spend. It works great for me.
