I haven't been back to Spring since they took the showers out of the rooms about 8 months back, any insights?

That's what I would have written two months ago after a previous visit. However I went last week and everything is different. The front desk staff were new and didn't really know the drill. The massage lady (more mature than the usual) turned up in the more traditional tunic found in veggie shops. The shower was still in the room, but I had to walk down the corridor to another room where all the furniture had been removed and use the shower there.

The massage, was excellent so I was beginning to think they had gone legit and, TBH, it was so good, I wouldn't have been that worried. However, after the flip, she started 'testing the waters' to see if I was interested in more. Then asked for a 400 tip. I managed to get that down to 200 and she gave me one of the best HEs that I've experienced at Spring.

So, physically a win-win but financially a bit of a fail. There's another place, not to far away that's more expensive than Spring where the service has been improving after the storms and where I have yet to be asked for tips. I'll go there for now. PM for details if you're interested.

Reading about Spring spa, I decided to go to the closest one, in Pudong Street.

I paid the 338 rmb massage version.

Very nice place, beautiful girl. But.

The girl asked for more other 500 rmb of tip for HJ, without any possibility to reduce the amount.

According to that I presume that there are different "categories" of Spring massage.

I have been to several Spring locations, and I always got the most expensive massage, around 336 rmb, and I always got asked for a large tip for HJ. I am pretty sure it is because I speak almost no Chinese and so the girl thinks I am a one-time client so she's got very little to lose by asking for a huge tip, like 300-500. At one place, the girl insisted on 500 tip and I said no and she strongly indicated it would be worth it, so I stupidly said okay because I was curious. I was at the Spring massage in Xuhui (there's 2 locations, I went to the wanping II location). If you tell them you want an oil massage, this location was 398, it comes standard with an HJ. That's interesting. I visit Shanghai very infrequently and for small periods of time, and I was so disappointed when SNG went out. Have tried Rain 2 times and I would rate my experience 7/10. Good attitude, but not much experience or much assets. But overall, shanghai has become expensive. I miss the 1000 specials of SNG.

Reading the Shanghai forum for the past couple months and thought I should start contributing.

Sauna's- The old Dongguan Sauna (Next top Merchant's Bank at Henan Lu and Zhoujin Lu) that got shuttered during the crackdown looks to be in the process of renovation. They look to be going for a bit less shady / more upstanding branding than the previous version (added glass doors and a large sign saying massage spa). I'm not concerned that the place has gone completely legit as a lot of goons I used to see around the Donguan version are back supervising construction. It looks like its getting ready to open any day so I'll report back.

On the down market end of the spectrum I've been noticing an increased number low end oil massage places north of peoples square. On Beijing Lu and the other on Xinchang lu. Standard tug shop experience, feels like you're getting a great deal until they start negotiating tips, and then you feel like an idiot for not going to spring on Maoming lu. If you find yourself in an emergency in that area.

A worker at 851 Shaanxi North Road spa told me it would reopen June 1st. I went by yesterday to check out the outside. The glass doors were intact with the usual bicycle lock. The video she sent of an MP glass front door getting smashed was another location. The outside steps and 7-11 type store next door looked similar. In my walk the other night, I went by the old Buddha and 851 Shanxia locations. Buddha is completely gone, 851 is still there but glass doors locked from the inside with heavy curtains so I could not see if the inside had been damaged. Other places on Changping Lu also closed with lights off.

Went back to one of my main saunas this week, 1st time back since the crackdown. Quality still high but pricing has skyrocketed. They said it's for protection, but who knows, might be lack of strong competition.

Anyway, experience reminded me why saunas can't be beat. Went with 900 series tall 22 year old from Hunan, 1 month in business.
