Having got so much valuable information from this forum, here is my recent experience of visiting Istedgrade for the first time.

A little geography if you've not visited. Istedgrade is quite a long street that runs from the central Copenhagen railway station. As you head from the railway station there are a couple of blocks of hotels, before you quickly reach the sex club area. Go further and the bottom of the street is a normal suburb with a few bars and restaurants.

In the sex club area there are guys on most corners pushing drugs I guess. They don't really bother you though other than quietly asking if you want something. A quick no and they leave you alone.

There are also streetwalkers (not my scene), sometimes just a few but at night numbers increase. Generally low quality but the odd better looking one. They can be a bit more assertive and may follow you for a short distance of even try to grab you. Not a problem though.

Overall I never felt threatened and felt safe.

I visited at the weekend so my experience is based on a Friday and Saturday.

First Thai corner. It's quite a small bar with a pole and very small dance area. The door is manned by an old Thai lady who seems to run the place. At certain times it was really busy (say 12 to 3 am). I was surprised how many ladyboys / tranvestites were there. Indeed although it's hard to be certain I'the say there were more than girls who seemed to be in the minority. They don't seem to mind you asking. I asked one and when I looked sceptical she grabbed my hand and put it up her dress, no underwear. They will talk to you but often asked for a drink which seems to have a standard price of 100 Kr which buys you a short time with them. If you don't come to an arrangement they move on and often don't drink most of the drink. I became a bit paranoid about the ladyboy thing, so many seemed to have deep voices and a slightly manly look. There are though some obvious girls.

Club 34 entrance is 60 Kr and beers are the same. You get a ticket and can come and go as you please for that day. The upstairs bar was deserted, no Thais just occasionally one or 2 customers. There were about 5 to 8 girls working the downstairs bar. Although friendly the conversation is limited. "Where you from? Do you want sex? Mostly Romanian, one Spanish. Not great quality with one exception, although of course everybody has different taste.

Club 18 / Candy club is also 60 kr. There is one main bar area where the girls hang out but also 2 or 3 that looked to me like transvestites. The girls were on average better looking than club 34 the nights I visited, with one stunner. They were also more friendly, beers were cheaper, and girl drinks the normal price. Very occasionally a pole dancer but not stripping. There's rooms / cubicles where you can go with the girls (have locked doors). I ended up paying 800 Kr for 30 minutes of Ok action, predictably pretty mechanic. Personally I preferred club 18 over club 34 - they both had a similar vibe. If you want to leave and come back you need to ask to get you're hand stamped.
