Sorry to hear about your problem with altitude sickness. I might be going to Bogota as early as Labor Day, and I am naturally concerned how altitude sickness can mess up my trip. However, I am thinking some of us might not have an issue with it. I spent a few nights in Mexico City with no problems. I just found out its up at 7300 feet, something I had not known before. I have also been to Taos, NM (7000 feet) numerous times without an issue other than a shortness of breath when walking up some steep stairs. I wonder what that extra 1500 feet in Bogota will do to me.

Now would someone try and clarify the climate in Bogota? What I read are a lot of contradictions. I keep seeing Bogota referred to as "cold" or chilly" (including the article above), with highs in the mid-60's and lows in the upper 40's year around. Though I come from a warm climate with a hot summer, I don't find that to be "cold". In fact, by Labor Day, 50 degrees Fahrenheit will sound great. I also understand that Bogota can be damp or foggy, and we know how humidity enhances the cold. Yet other travel related sources refer to it as being dry due to its altitude, admonishing the visitor to hydrate by drinking more water. I visualize wearing a light jacket or a blazer, long sleeve shirt with jeans and regular leather shoes. But, when I look around Bogota using Google Street View, I see a lot of guys in their shirtsleeves. I curious what those who have visited have to say about that.

One reason I definitely was using the escorts like crazy to come to my place when I went!! Hopefully you got your hands on some ibuprofen as that can take the edge off a bit. And one of the most helpful is no walking basically and limited moving, but sounds like you were venturing out which didn't help (I did the same).

I've gone to Medellin a couple of times with absolutely no side effects. The altitude there is 4,900 feet. Bogota is 8,700 feet. Perhaps a good idea is to start by going to Medellin for a few days to a week, which will allow your body to acclimate to 5,000 ft and then go to Bogota. By then the adjustment from 5,000 to 8,700 feet may not be as debilitating and you may surmount it in a day or two. I'm just throwing out an idea.

Then I had a beer. My heart began pounding. Then I went slightly uphill back to my hotel. It was a short one-block walk, but I felt exhausted. Got in the room, lay down for 15 minutes. My heart rate kept pounding. Accompanied by a headache and bad pressure around my temples.

The coco leaves tea did nothing for me.

Decided to take it easy and found a tantra massage called Mantra. $140 for (supposedly 1 hour 20 minutes. Had a very nice massage with a nice tantra-like finish, done by a girl called Carolina. Nice girl and not a bad finish, but I had much better in Siem Reap and Hamburg of all places. The receptionist never bothered to give me a change from 150.

Thought I'd call it a night expecting to wake up relaxed and recharged. No such luck. Today did some touristy things in Candelaria and Monseratte. Every step uphill was a challenge. Got back to the hotel, had a couple of drinks. As I'm writing this, lying in my bed, my heart is making 130 a minute. It's clear to me that I'm not capable of drinking or making any physical exercises tonight. Am I fucked or what? What if this persists for all 5 days I'm here?

Routard posted a nearly endless list and I looked through every one. Sunday was a wasted day as far as mongering but I made up for it today. Plenty of hot girls at Atunes and Fiebres. As far as flights are concerned, I think I tried with both LATAM and Avianca, and was getting the $100 each way price.

For the first couple days here before I got a SIM card and internet connection, I was getting screwed over by the taxis. They were charging me two to three times the uber price. Definitely use uber when your here.

With uber, it costs about 12 K COP to get from the north end of Bogota to the South. That's about US $4 to cross the whole city. I almost feel guilty paying so little. Another way to save money is to bring your clothes to nearby laundry mat. They quoted only about 8 K COP for a half bag of clothes. Contrast that to the hotel cleaning prices where a single shirt can cost more than that.

Was at Santa Fe Red light district last night (Saturday) but all clubs were closed due to alcohol ban for presidential election. This sucks. Looks like it won't be lifted until Monday Morning so I'm out of luck for today. There were a few girls working the hotel lobbys in the area but nothing to look at. If you hit the right day and time it's possible to get a BOG to MDE or vice versa, for 30 k on Viva Colombia. However, that price is usually a last minute offer. Avianca is definitely more comfortable.

Not to worried about comfort on an hour flight.

Wow that is cheap, thanks for posting that. I hope it's not a local rate only, where they would charge more for foreigners, but it doesn't seem like it. I could make a two day round trip flight to Medellin for only 340 K COP with that airline. I think I'll have my hands full in Bogota for the rest of this trip, but that's good to know for future trips.
