Puerto Velero is a local weekend hangout. A sheltered bay surrounded by "kioskas". It's only about a half an hour from the city on a toll road, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Is there any decent beach close to Barranquilla?

Depends on what you're looking for, but warm, tourist beaches with shade, pretty girls and drinks. No. Barranquilla is a port town on the huge, muddy Magdalena river. At the river mouth there are numerous dry salty marshes, which are full of fish and birds, but are not a place to hang out and relax. I've been to many of the beaches between Barranquilla and Cartagena. The coast is super windy about 2/3 rds of the year. The tradewinds blow from the E / NE at 25+ knots. The Magdalena is a muddy river full of debris; hence the beaches immediately to the west of town are brownish river sand and usually covered with tree branches (and huge logs), as well as an infinitude of plastic bottles. The sand gets whiter as you go west, and after Puerto Velero the beaches are more or less typical Caribbean, but with often howling wind (which diminishes as you get closer to Cartagena). Puerto Velero is a local weekend hangout. A sheltered bay surrounded by "kioskas". It's only about a half an hour from the city on a toll road, but I wouldn't recommend it.
