I too have not had any run-ins with them in years, since the one mentioned below. To be clear, the danger is mostly in getting pick-pocketed by them. Two or 3 will come running up to you, distract you, then another 1-2 will go for your back pocket looking for your wallet.

Many years ago I got robbed this way; but luckily they didn't get my wallet, just my electronic translator. (So long ago this was before smart phones!) I learned my lesson.
If a group of girls or trannies come running up to you, warn them off. I often carry pepper spray just for this eventuality. But again, I've not been accosted by them in many years. I just feel safer at night with pepper spray in my pocket. When I go into the Rey I just throw it in my underwear. They seldom search me anyway.

Wow, kinda glad to know I'm not the only one who's had this happen- though it was in Cali, Colombia, not Costa Rica. But yeah, the tranny gang robbery thing is crazy. I jogged away and thought I'd escaped, but two followed me and one pulled out a knife. Lost some cash, but fortunately nothing else. Good advice to not even get close and have a safety plan in areas like this.

I am not a very picky guy so my standards are way lower than most guys. So I have no problem finding girls at Monica's and some of the other MPs. As far as trannies go I noticed most of them tended to be hanging around the edges of the park or across the street and then up to a 2 block radius. I never saw a group bigger than 4 and they really didn't seem to be bothering anyone. In general I felt San Jose was very safe. I am sure if you travel around the city there are probably some really dangerous unsafe neighborhoods but that's the same in any City in the world. But generally speaking I felt much safer walking around in San Jose at night then I would driving through some neighborhoods in the USA During the day.

Okay then the police must have moved the trannies down the hill away from Morazan Park when I was there last; probably slacking off and letting them come up the hill again.

I'm like you, poonyd, I am not afraid of walking in San Jose. I have been in worse neighborhoods. I would NOT wander into the worst parts of San Jose but the area 6 blocks in every direction of the Del Rey isn't that bad.

So this advice isn't for you, but for newbies and also serves as a reminder for some not-so newbies:

One should never walk drunk or impaired, more than a block or two, and one should always remain alert of one's surroundings in San Jose.

Even during the day time, one needs to maintain alertness. Is it teeming with pickpockets and thieves? No, I would not say that. BUT it does happen. I was pick-pocketed once on one of the walking streets, Ave 1 I think it was. One guy bumped into me and another guy amazingly quickly got into my daypack on my back and grabbed what he hoped was my wallet. It was just my eyeglasses. A substantial loss anyway, but could have been worse. Now I carry my backpack on my front, kangaroo style in SJ.

At night of course there may be guys just looking to rob a drunken or semi-conscious gringo, hoping to score some crack or coke. So you just got to be aware of that and know who's around you and behind you etc, at night. If you see someone who might be following you, there's no shame in picking up the pace or running from them if you have to. If they're crack addicts they're usually too out of it to go fast anyway, so walking fast in general is another good practice.

By the way please NEVER GIVE THE BEGGARS IN FRONT OF THE DEL REY MONEY! Several are the same crack addicts that have been there for years. And if you stop to get your money out who knows what could happen. I just speed up and blow by them shaking my head no. I wish the police would drive them out of there but for some reason they don't.

I started giving daily updates on Monica's but I got lazy so here is my overall report. If it looks familiar it's because I posted it to a few other sites.

So I am not going to get deep into details. Just going to give you guys the highlights. I stayed at La Amistad paid the extra $10 for the all inclusive. Hands down the best monger friendly hotel I have ever stayed at. I can't say enough good things about these guys. And what an unbelievable deal the all inclusive is. All the like minded fellows who stay there are cool. Definitely like that clubhouse vibe. Castillo is also great too. Uber from the airport to the hotel costed $16. As far as the ticas go I sampled a wide variety of them. Definitely better off getting colones and negotiating with them. Sportsman had some very nice talent and del Rey was better on Wednesday and Thursday night. I think a lot of the top tier girls go to Jaco to get the big money. Still there was plenty of action. From del Rey and sportsman I was able to negotiate most pulls from 30,000 colones to 40,000 colones. Daytime action Monica's is a great value spot to bang decent young talent for 14 mil no haggling. Stopped in a bunch of other MPs and what not. Believe it or not or not my best session was on Calle 6 at a 6 mil MP. Girl's name was Melissa and she did not disappoint. She definitely seems to enjoy her work and I think she actually liked phucking me, or she is one hell of an actress. Either way I am not complaining. A decent Phuck for under $10 USA She was licking asshole and all without me even asking. I only spent $100 once the whole trip and that was by choice on my last night. I took a super plastic tica from del Rey. She was extremely hot to me. She had major work done. Fake everything. I'm pretty sure she had work on her abs and face too. Spoke good English. She started negotiations at $150 USA I told her $100 and she took it without hestitation. I probably could have gotten her lower if I used colones or felt like haggling because it was a slow night but all I had left in the safe was a $100 bill. So I just decided to make my last one a good one. She did not disappoint. No rush and good service. I know many guys aren't into the plastic Barbie dolls. I usually don't do them because they usually charge more. All in all it was a great trip. My first time in CR and I will definitely be coming back. Another quick note. Once I arrived to the hotel I went everywhere on foot and felt completely safe the whole trip. The only time I took a taxi is when I pulled a girl from the del rey. Otherwise I walked. Whether with other guys or by myself I didn't feel any danger at all. The way many people talked about the trannies near the park I had an image in my head of 30-40 trannies with crow bars and knives ready to jump out of bushes ready to and rob me. The truth is I only noticed a few of them and they seem to mind there own business. No issues at all with them or the local tico hustlers. After many trips to sosua dr San Jose feels like I am in the baby pool as far as safety goes. Obviously everyone's experience and comfort level is different and I am only sharing mine.

Did you actually see trannies near the park? Last time I was there it seemed they were only a few blocks south of there, kinda between the Holiday Inn and the Park.

However they did USED to be a problem and one should still be careful.

Once a few years ago they accosted my friend and me in front of the Holiday Inn and they tried to grab my friend's wallet. He took a swing at one and I had to pull out my pepper spray to get them to back off.

But that was years ago and like I say, as far as I have seen they now hang out further away, a couple blocks behind the Holiday Inn. I passed them as I walked from the Taormina to the Del Rey. One should not walk at night but I've always been brave that way. I don't recommend others do it.

When I was there I stayed at an upscale hotel in escazu and had a room at morazon (right next to Dr) for like $35 a night that I just used for bringing girls back from hdr. If I'm back in sj I will do the same thing again.

You must have been there a long time ago!

Last year I paid $55-60 a night, and right now the cheapest I could find was $73 a night so I took the Taormina at $76 a night which is way better.

Like I said though, I have heard you can sometimes get a room for an hour at the Morazan. BUT they have new management now and have done some renovation so not sure they even offer that any more. Certainly not if they're full which they seem to be a lot lately.

You do not have to tip at all. Some girls may not like it if you don't but others don't' expect it.

I live here and how I handle it is this:

If their service is good but nothing special I'll give them 2-3 mil extra ($3-5 at current exchange rates).

If their service is TOP NOTCH I will give them 5 mil which is about $8 if I feel like it, or whatever I have close to that.

If their service is average or less than average I'll give NO tip and if they ask I'll tell them why, as I never plan to see them again anyway.

Getting to the Del Ray or elsewhere in the vicinity seems pretty unlikely, is there a reliable website that one can order room service from?

Even a veteran monger who lives here can make a bad judgment call on occasion, and I am man enough to admit I did that recently.

I spent an hour talking with her at the DR and was convinced she was a good service provider but yeah, I misjudged this one big time! It happens. Rarely but it happens.

So if you see this girl with a Tazmanian Devil cartoon tattoo on her shoulder, tell her to eff off, that you heard she's an "engañadora", (cheater) and if you see a male friend with her, warn him she's a con artist.

I told her in no uncertain terms that she's playing with fire and some horny guy is liable to beat the shit out of her some day for trying to rip him off. I told her to look for another job because she won't last at this one and is liable to get hurt.

I told the hotel the same, that she is trouble waiting to happen and so they should ban her. They said they would.

Sorry, but this is just silly. The same debate, cien or no cien, was live and raging in 2003. Never pay cien. Never pay cien. It might have had some value back then; that is usually what a TLN / LT c, aost. That was 15 year ago. 15 years.

See what a price of a meal actually costs, not to mention rent and other expenses for the chicas. And cien is not the issue, for me. It is what you Get for the $100. If you have well honed negotiating skills, good selection criteria, and a bit of patience playing the game, you can increases in time / number of sessions instead of a small decrease in price. I would far rather pay 20 or 40 dollars more for a 3 or 4 hour, full GFE session than the lower amount with one pop.

If you know your business yes you can pay cien for more than an hour and I have no problem with that.

What I and other mongers have a problem with are amateurs who go in offering cien. Or more! - to every girl.

First of all no one should be negotiating in dollars! The dollar is worth 603 colones right now which means $100 is worth 60 mil colones!

So I offer and get girls for 40 mil which is generally speaking my top price. So 60 mil is 50% more than anyone should pay for just a room visit (an hour or two).

If you are negotiating for 3-5 hours that's a whole other ball game, and yes, GFE for that time is okay for cien. But for just an hour, cien is ridiculous!

And like I say, no one should negotiate in dollars, that's a newbie mistake.

Today, I visited Monica's. Its regarded as the best place. Owner remembered me from 4 years ago.

Arrived at 1000 am. 14 chicas. Average with tattoos. No smiling. Finally selected a newly arrived cute spinner named Daisy. Good attitude. Decent GFE. Licking balls was extra. 20 mil for one hour is great value. Nice ass. Great cowgirl performer.

Later numbered to HDR. There is a government worker strike. The government is trying to reduce pension benefits. Get this -- they are still getting PAID. They block traffic. My uber ride from the Sportsmen got jacked up to 3600 colons. The ride back was under 1000.

The chicas at hdr are too aggressive and hardened pros. Decent but not enough to get you to spend money. They all start at 100 and quickly drop to 80. There was a girl from Denmark seeking 300 us per hour.

Returned to SL. Younger and hotter chicas with nicer vibes. Accumulating numbers from young hotties. It's tough to pay their prices with Monica's around.

BTW some American amigo told me Alcazar strip club was incredible on a Tuesday.

I've been by Monicas 4 times. Every time I have checked it out it's got nothing but unattractive fat or ugly chicks there. Maybe I'm just unlucky? I doubt it. 4 times?! Never been there after midnight nor will I be: that's a dangerous area! And little police presence!

SL: Safe, at least. But in all my years of stopping by there I've never once found a girl that inspired me to go to my room with her.

DR: hardened pros? Some yes, but not all. The DR is still the best for anyone who knows how to deal with negotiating with the girls, IMHO. You can still get a good one if you don't but it's harder. If you don't speak Spanish and don't know how to negotiate, then maybe SL is okay for you. But the selection is 1/20th of what you get at the Del Rey.

Had some Southwest Airlines miles burning a hole in my account so decided to return to San Jose this past weekend after about a year and a half absence. While I had a decent time the first few days with an old favorita, I was on my own Saturday night and decided to check out the Halloween Party at Sportsmen's Lodge. Big disappointment. I would estimate there were at least three mongers for every chica, the majority of whom were very unfriendly. Attempted to salvage the night by taking a stroll through HDR. While the monger-chica ratio was somewhat better, I didn't see a single one that caught my eye or interested me whatsoever and I called it an evening around 11. It was great while it lasted, but San Jose is truly in terminal decline in my opinion, so I will stick with MDE, CTG, and PTY in the future.

Admittedly SJ is not what it used to be. But it ain't dead!

Here's the deal nowadays:

You got to pass a few hours there sometimes (not always! Depends on your luck and your pickiness) to find a girl.

If you get there around 8 pm and stay til 11 pm I can pretty much guarantee you can find what you are looking for!

In fact sometimes even more good ones come in after midnight. So you got to be patient. It's harder than it used to be to find a great one but it's still totally do-able!

I despise the Sportsmans Lodge! High priced shitty American food! WAY TOO LOUD MUSIC so I can't even hear myself f-ing think! Girls who are never as top notch as the top notch girls at the Del Rey (again, you got to be patient though.) And the manager of the SL kicks people off "that other forum" for giving any negative criticism. It happened to me just because I told the truth, that the waitress short changed me and the omelet I got was inedible, bathed in grease!

The Del Rey is the only game in town.

Key Largo. I heard they were going to close it. Unless they stop playing that HORRIBLE live music in the 2nd room and HORRIBLE dance music in the first room, they may as well close as far as I am concerned. I can't spend 5 min in there without it giving me a effin headache!

Also almost no good girls go in there any more, just chanchas.

If there is, I don't know about it. Why not take a taxi to and from the Del Rey. Taxis or better yet. Uber - are very reasonable here.

You have a couple options: you can rent an hour at the Morazan if they're not too busy (so I've heard). And there are places around the Del Rey (not far) that you can rent for an hour for a few dollars. They're not the cleanest but "probably clean enough" for a fuck. I've used them, never caught a bug.

Otherwise just rent the cheapest room at one of the monger hotels just to have it there for your hour of use. ?

The other option might be to look for girls on a "outcall" kind of site but now that Trump's admin has killed Craigslist and Backpage, I don't know where people find traveling girls.
