There is an easy workaround for Whatsapp. If you have Android, use Securefolder that gives you another virtual phone inside yours, register Whatsapp with the cheap SIM and then take the SIM out.

I am usually one of the leechers here (mostly because I don't have much interesting information to share honestly), but I thought you would enjoy this one:

So here I was, looking for some fresh options, been living in HK for a few years now, and it is always a bit hard to find (as in young&pretty) in the walk-ups, so I decided to try using some apps to find new contacts (namely Tinder / OkCupid etc).

Scanned threw the contacts in the vicinity, and found some advertising their wechat or Line or Ig contacts, so I decided to give it a go.

One wanted that I registered on some video webcam, and pay by CC to "vote for her" so we can meet.

Denied, obvious scam.

I wandered a bit much and In the end, after some small talk with another one, got a meeting during the day in front of a 7-11 at an MTR station (I thought, well why not, could be legit, plain sight, during the day, in a widely visible place.

Then they asked (because it was the first time I booked a girl) to purchase a cash card for the amount decided (about 800). I reluctantly did so, and send initially a picture of the cashier ticket.

Then they requested the whole thing, (which I denied, cause that was looking too scamy at that point).

Finally, after some time, they started to get menacing and threatening on the phone, saying they will send somebody to kill me etc. (OK, it was my mistake I should have stopped when they requested the phone number).

In the end, I gave up, and deleted / blocked all contacts. I am in for a card I could simply not use anyway, and some wasted time (and I count of another few anonymous calls I am sure. Maybe got to change my number for some peace).

So. I was obviously stupid, (I even read some other guys having some similar experience on another forum. But still somewhat different).

Lesson learned:

- do all your communications by means you can easily cancel (ex: wechat, line etc. Avoid whatsapp, it is bound to your number).

- if asked for payment upfront (of any kind), just cancel and walk away.

- just never give your phone number or anything too specific.

I know those are the obvious, and most of the veteran will just have a good laugh, but well. Now you know.

As for me, I am going to lay low for some time anyway, not really want to have similar experience a second time. Maybe I'll visit the usual places. (or if some mongers have good contacts for good quality, I am up for it.
