One different feature about Mongolian society is that a group of couples will go out for an evening and the girls will all sit together at one table and the guys will sit together somewhere else in the room. My guess is that in your case the guys were with the girls and were exhibiting this behavior; that is, the girls were chatting and enjoying time together while the guys were playing pool.

Your error (from my perspective) was approaching the girls. If they are genuine WGs then they will approach you, and in Naadam Bar they use various strategies to do this. If they were smiling at you or looking at you I suspect they were just having a game and teasing you and just wanted to see what would happen when you made their BFs jealous.

My experience in UB is to assume girls who appear to be alone are with someone else until they actually approach you in some way. Although Mongolian guys can get jealous of foreigners taking their girls they generally don't translate this annoyance into action unless they have been drinking. That scenario will always end badly for a foreigner, and best to hot-foot it out of the scene.
