How does one reach Katherine from Patong beach? What's the round trip fare for a taxi or bus?

I would recommend taking a taxi for speed and safety unless you are willing to drive motorbike by yourself. Compromise would be motorbike taxi there is slow travel buses that will take you to nearby area in Phuket town. Avoid tuk-tuk unless you know how to deal with them.

I found this on something called internet:

I was walking around in the Patong area of Phuket and whenever I saw a thin and attractive Thai masseuse I would ask if she offered full service. Couldn't agree with you more David. Patong doesn't do it for me as it did a few years ago. I head out to the suburbs. Karon, bantao. Bangtao is an absolute gold mine. There are several diamonds there who are so humble and treat you with respect, unlike the leeches in patong who are used to the usual tourists.

As David said I found a few diamonds in bangtao.

Treat them you would a Thai GF, take them for lunch, treat them well and pay a little over the odds (the extra 500 - 1000 THB is much more valuable to them than it us us) and it will reward you in spades. That's the game, pretty easy to learn how to play it. Also Phuket is just a much more pleasant location for when you're not mongering.
