As a frequent visitor here's a couple of things that might help.

Unless it's a very quick visit, the most economical and hassle-free way of travelling is:

* On arrival: get a one-way ticket for either metro (simplest) or airport bus.

The airport bus takes you to Syntagma.

The metro one-way ticket gives you access to all connecting metros from Syntagma.

* Once in town: get a five-day ticket. This gives you automatic access to all metros, city trains, trams and trolley bus (except for going back to the airport).

* Going home: choose what is most convenient and get a one-way ticket. A one-way bus ticket to the airport from Syntagma (runs all night) or a one-way Metro ticket (but check last Metro times. If using a taxi try to agree a price first.

Trash places: mileage varies. From countless visits, I find the area starting from Kolonou has given me the most memorable times even if it's the cheapest. Try going daytime. It is very convenient and also has many interesting places other than the houses. They are scruffy buildings but that doesn't generally reflect on quality of service. Filis occasionally has more stunners but tends to be more slot-machine service (there are many exceptions of course, as I said mileage varies). Indian men go round in groups not buying anything — silly, but not dangerous. If you don't speak any Greek and the mamasan doesn't either, just say "ten" or wave a ten euro note. It's standardised.

Remember Athens is a marvellous and very varied city, one of the most interesting in the world. It's worth doing other things as well as mongering!
