I just arrived to Monterrey and got a room at hotel Mexico for one day and I must say that I am very pleased, it may not appear it from the outside but the inside is spacious, new and friendly staff. I even got a receipt and for 26 dollars it beats any airbnb for what you get here. I will look around a few other hotels but this place is really all I could want. Thanks unstoppable for turning me on to this place.

Great reporting, Zygo. I am going to be checking back every day for your updates. I haven't been to Monterrey in while, but now I think I think I'm going to start going again, and as I posted before, the round trip bus fare on Greyhound from SA is the same to Monterrey as it is to Laredo, sometimes even less, at least for us senior citizens. I just have to get my new passport. Incidentally for those that don't know, if you walk back into the US from Mexico you can use an expired passport, just so the picture looks more or less like you.

Did you try to get a weekly rate at your hotel? Sometimes in Mexico they will give a discount if you pay a week in advance.

What is the longest period of time that you have spent in Monterrey and do you ever venture out to places like Alameda Park and last but not least do you find yourself having to dress down so you can blend in more with the locals?

Thank you so much Unstoppable, my fellow San Antonionian. I will probably try Hotel Plaza Arteaga and I like how close it is to a handful of spas, street activity and strip clubs. Regarding hotel Mexico, I like how much cheaper it is but I have never operated a mini split without a remote so I hope it is manageable. I always travel with a portable USB battery so I could always charge my phone that way but I also have a long usb cable as well. I found several other places from the web that I will be trying out. Since I will have a whole 2 weeks in MTY during my vacation the week after Semana Santa, I will be exploring many hotels and I am thinking about putting the hotel experiences in my reviews. A few hotels that I plan on trying out are Hotel 500 on Madero and Zaragoza which is also a new hotel, Hotel Apartamentos del Norte which is on Zaragoza and Reforma, Hotel Madero Express on Madero off Calle Benito Juarez, Hotel Latino which is listed on Airbnb and is on Vicente Guerrero off Colon, and maybe a couple of hostels. I am considering all of these Hotels for their cheap rates and new or renovated facilities. Maybe we can meet up sometime unstoppable, please feel free to PM me your number is you want to text. I plan on spending allot more time in Monterrey in the future as well.

Unstoppable, is it possible to get rooms for multiple days at hotel hacienda, hotel Mexico and / or hotel plaza Arteaga without having to pay one day at a time? The reason I ask is because I would like to leave my hotel around 10 or 10 30 and not have to come back before 12 to pay for another day. I like to stay out for a few hours which would bring me back to the hotel around 1 30 or so. Thanks, zygo.

Yes you can pay for multiple days in advance. If you stay overnight at Hacienda, you'll want to stay on the third (top) floor. It's quieter and has an outdoor seating area. At Plaza Arteaga, I like to stay on the third floor too.

I think the showers at Plaza Arteaga is better than Hacienda's. Arteaga is newer and cleaner but it's 70 pesos more expensive for a sencilla (simple) room compared to 720 for Hacienda.

Hotel Mexico is about 100 meters south of Hacienda and it's only 490 pesos a night. They remodeled a couple of years ago and it's clean and safe too. The only things I don't like about this hotel is they don't give you the remote for the mini-split and there's no electrical outlet by the bed so you can't use your phone while charging. You may have different preferences so those may not bother you so at 490 a night, it's a great deal.

I am going to be in Monterrey for 2 weeks in about 1 week and I was wondering if anyone knows if any hotel has showers comparable to hotel hacienda which has those awesome showers with high water pressure and endless hot water. I love those showers and I use them several times per day. I was hoping the hotel plaza Arteaga has comparable showers but since I am just starting to explore the hotels I am not too knowledgeable on the showers that they have in the hotel rooms. That is something that I will be looking into once I am there and can start trying out various hotels around the downtown area. If anyone knows, please let me know so I can plan early. Thanks.

These shootings happen all over Mexico from time to time, mostly in strip clubs that provide services. They are always blamed in the press as cartel related but they are rarely solved and prosecuted. They are likely a warning to pay protection money, the mordida, to the local police or to gangsters. Typically, they enter and spray gunfire killing employees and customers. The club reopens a few weeks later. In Monterrey these assaults are always blamed on the Zetas. There are still no prosecutions for the 2011 Royale Casino firebombing that killed 52. The #3 man of LOS Zetas, Carlos Olivia Castillo, was arrested then placed in a witness protection program a year later, and three years after that unrelated charges were brought but I can'd determine what became of him or those charges after 2014. More recently, in February of this year, the Gran Pastor Restaurant was torched a year after its manager was dragged out and shot in the head. Also blamed on the Zetas.

Shit happens and in Mexico with impunity for the wealthy and powerful. On the whole, it is extremely unlikely that you will be caught like Feerless Fosdick citizens in the crossfire.

I am not a fan of strip clubs but there are some very hot girls at the clubs in Monterrey. Below is Brianda of the Matehuala. I rest my case. The privados there are horrid but I did get to poke her with her leg up on a chair. I am an escort guy myself.

I have ran into a couple of guys on here who have asked me out for drinks but I don't drink due to an illness plus in the long run it is also healthier for me. I am also somewhat shy but I remember going to the strip clubs and having a decent time but that was before corruption and violence started to increase to frightening levels. I get this type of treatment allot in Mexico where I will be walking and people totally ignore me and that includes bouncers at strip clubs in front of the clubs, it includes border patrol agents checking people for documents, it includes security guards at the central bus station checking luggage, it includes Mexican border patrol agents checking peoples luggage and more. Maybe the best way to have fun is to fly under the radar and fuck as many girls as possible.

Next week, the word is that popular spas will be closed next week 4/15 to 4/21 due to semana Santa which is a week long holiday for allot of people in Mexico.

Correct the Strip Clubs suck in MTY, bad area of town, run down, a major disappointment. Online and street game is what works in MTY.

Unlike my man Zygomatic, (AKA the Budget Dude), I can only handle MTY for short periods of time, no way I could live there. I Like the girls and San Pedro, but that is about it.

Dramafree11 LOL, so in an effort to try to blend in better with the street people in Monterrey, I went to a few goodwill here in San Antonio to look for some jeans and found nothing so I went to a used clothing store called platos closet and found a pair of nice jeans and nice cargo shorts but instead of finding some pants that would blend in better with the street people of downtown Monterrey, I found pants and shorts that were much nicer than my old Levi's which are in themselves very nice. Oh well, I am saying screw it to trying to blend in and am going to pack my suite case with what feels more comfortable to me and for shoes I will take my sketchers LOL which for Monterrey are very high end. As of recent, I have been finding some really nice big booty girls at the spas so if my attire attracts to much negative attention where street girls hang out I may just focus more on the spas.
