Right-o then, it's years since I posted here, so having spent the best part of 6 months in Suva, I best give you a report. Where to start? Having come here from SE Asia, getting used to the slower pace was a bit of a headfuck. Nonetheless, my employer has been supportive and I found my feet quickly. I moved to a fairly nondescript neighborhood, preferring to avoid the expat gossip circuits of Domain and Toorak, my street is mostly Indian, but a few iTaukei around as well. I'm not far from a few suburbs that have a reputation for being a bit nasty, but I've walked all over and nobody has threatened me. On the contrary, Fijians are some of the friendliest people I've met.

Since I am away for work frequently, I have a bolt hole apartment, 2 bdr, kitchen, aircon for 1500 FJD a month. Power bills run about 50 a month and the only other expense I have is internet for another 50. That buys me 75 g day and 75 night, which is plenty since I download my shows while I sleep. I looked at plenty of places that were more expensive or the same price and nowhere near as comfy. It's not the Ritz, but it does the trick.

I'm only a 10 minute taxi ride from the city centre, such as it is, so if I want to go for a night on the tiles, the trip home is 5 FJD. Beer is not too expensive, depending where you drink, ranging from 18 FJD for a happy hour jug at Downunder to around 30 at O'Reilly's. The nightlife is pretty shit in Suva, from the POV of a well-traveled expat, but some like it. My main complaints (mostly about O'Reilly's) are the huge numbers of gays and transexuals (not homophobic, but I'm looking for vagina), staff who will rip you off without thinking of the consequences (got a bartender there sacked a few weeks back), thieving bitches on the dance floor (mate had his wallet lifted), violent drunken ethnic Fijians (twats, I'm one of the bigger blokes around Suva and although I don't go looking for trouble, I won't shy away from it) and the snobby off-shore civil servants and NGO types who think they are there to save the world. Give the place a go by all means, but I'd rather eat my own face than make it my regular. I haven't pulled from here, got a few numbers, but have had better success at Downunder. One caveat, this place is notorious for [CodeWord902] drinkers and many of my workmates have said they had their first beer here at age 14-15, so make sure you have your Department of Fisheries ruler handy so you can throw the jailbait back. You are more likely to find unpretentious office and shop girls here winding down and I've ended up taking a few home after plying them with cheap drinks. The only other places I've really tried are Traps on Victoria Parade, which I dub twatsville, and Temptation 1, a very local sort of a joint with plenty of potential on the female front, but I was so pissed the one time I went in that I couldn't pull if I tried.

Nadi is a different beast and somewhere I like to get away to for a night out. Work takes me there often and I enjoy the 3. 5-hour drive along the Coral Coast to get there. The club scene is much better with a better mix of ladies, locals and tourists (if you are the kind of depraved bastard that fucks white women) alike. The only other place where I have tested the nightlife is Labasa on Vanua Levu and as I write this, one of the barmaids I met at Feenix (yes, it's spelled that way) is sat on my couch after I flew her over for a 3-day holiday. All in all I can say I am not sorry for coming here, but it sure has hell ain't as promising as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. The Solomon Islands, more of which I will report on in the relevant section, has the best nightlife in the Pacific that I've encountered yet and although expensive accom and food-wise, is the real hidden gem of the region. Samoa is a find country with lovely people, but for me it's the travel equivalent of a roofie.

I'll check back in with why'all in a few months and let you know how my constant reshuffle of the roster is progressing. I know this probably hasn't added much to the greater pool of knowledge, being more a stream of consciousness as my nutsack refills for a third romp with the barmaid today ebbs closer, but I am happy to answer questions here and in PM if you are the shy type.
