There are tons of girls available in Parque de Novios, Bolivar, and the Malecon starting in the afternoon into the evenings. I actually like it as much as Medellin! Once you get some regulars you can have 24 hour service.

I always see plenty of working girls in Pqe de LOS Novios. In fact, I stayed in an apto in Pqe de LOS Novios for a few weeks. I could wave at the girls and ask them to come up.

Anyone that ever needs to extend their tourist stamp in Colombia, I def recommend the immigration office in Sta Marta. Calle 19, #9.

I wasn't sure what docs I needed, so went there expecting it to be a long process. When I arrived the security guard told me to go to a shop house 30 m away (in the small street immediately in front of the office). There the lady completed an online form for me, made photocopies for me; everything I needed (note: not an onward ticket. Not required). She charged me COP 4. 000. Superb. Also speaks Englsih, apparently.

Went back to the immigration office. 10 minutes and COP 99.000 later I had my 3-month extension.

The girls in Bananas are really pigs. A few months ago there was Paula. She was a doll and has left. The restaurants in Santa Marta are some of the worst I have ever experienced. Can't wait to get out of here in August after one full year. Why anyone would hobby here I can't imagine. And right now it is hotter than hell.

There are plenty of decent looking girls in Bananas. Maybe 5 or 6 on a busy night. They change quite a bit. But always a decent one to choose. But this is beside the point, and the reason I disagree with your comment "Why anyone would hobby here I can't imagine. " There are dozens of girls in Pqe de LOS Novios, Pqe Bolivar, on the Malecon, down the back streets (CL 18-11). Some of these girls are equally fine and charge COP 50.000. That seems like a good reason to monger in Sta Marta! Also there is Dubai club in Radadero, plus some pick up clubs in Sta Marta where working girls attend. I think it is a very affordable, safe and easy place to monger.

As for the restaurants. Have to disagree here too. I think the choices of decent restaurants on the 2 main walking streets represent a greater concentration than any place I have found in the whole of Colombia. Ok, perhaps Provenza / Poblado area is about the same.

So overall, I think PM gives an unjustly negative impression. Maybe after 1 year, you are burnt out and ready to move on! .

Actually, shipping and commerce are way more important to the local economy. Cartagena is the largest port in South America. Look East across the Bay, you'll see what I'm talking about. Container port, navy base, oil refineries. Santa Marta's economy is much more reliant on tourism (as a percentage of the total).

I think I would have preferred to see that authentic part of town than just the concrete maze of Bocagrande and the living museum of the old town! Probably would have been more decent looking women walking about at lunchtime from their jobs too, like I saw in Santa Marta for example all around the Banco de Bogota, all day long there in fact!

Just don't think there was much to like about Santa Marta. Crap beach for a start. The one redeeming feature was a pretty lively bar and restaurant area, but personally don't see why you wouldn't stick to Cartagena unless you intend heading out to Tayrona or elsewhere to the East.

I stayed in the old town in a nice boutique hotel. So living quarters wasn't an issue.

Bananas was about half full by the time I took a girl upstairs. A handful of tourists.

Well, personally unlike a lot of you guys I coudn't care less about a beach so that didn't bother me. Like you said it has decent hotels and a lively bar and restaurant area. My hotel also had a great rooftop pool where I could hang around. The average woman walking around Santa Marta was WAY better looking than Cartagena, and its an authentic small Colombian city that doesn't only count on tourism. That's what I liked about the place.

Cartagena on the other hand seems to rely entirely on tourism. I was only there for 5 days but wasn't sad to leave the place. Bocagrande had NO redeeming features to me whatsoever (as like I said I'm not into the beach), it's just a concrete sprawl of tourists, fast food joints, restaurants and pretty ugly locals. I can count the number of sexy looking women I saw there on one hand. The old town is pretty but packed full of street vendors and beggers, and the talent at the clocktower was pretty desperate the two nights I checked it out!

I don't agree with what you said about Bananas, there were some nice ones there. That's just your subjective opinion. I didn't have any trouble finding decent places to eat. Maybe you're looking for 5 star restaurants, I wasn't! Aren't you in Rodadero though, that's NOT Santa Marta and from what I saw on my way through it going to Cartagena, it's pretty boring! Hot as hell? Yes, but so is everywhere along that north coast at the moment. I suppose I would also complain if I was stuck somewhere for a year that I didn't want to be, but then again why are you still there if you dislike it so much?
