I have a hard time believing that a policy that originated in Tana and is apparently being followed strictly would not apply to other international ports of arrival. That said, coming from Canada there are almost no options that are easy (or easy on the wallet) for Majunga so it really doesn't matter to me.

If you arrive directly in Majunga you can get 3 months on arrival. It s probably the same in Nosybe so the issue of 3 months VOA seems to be in Tana only.

Think of all the high visa fees we've had to pay for so many other African countries, and all the former soviet countries, and you got nothing to complain about in Mada. Really appreciate the service of these fixers we used one to get a Thai visa for a girl: no fuss, door-to-door service for a mere 100 euros.

Ya. And not to forget. Get hold of any official Friday afternoon.

And of course you have to pay three people. The guy in the hotel, the policeman, and the Top Boss. Thats why it pays off to call a police general your friend. But for 1000€ you can get a 3 years residence. Transaction fee already included. And no need to leave Mada.

Quite a clusterfuck. I got help from the hotel and met some police flunky who then called his boss. This was Friday at 1 pm. After some dickering I agreed to pay 100 euro! Fuck me what a costly error.

Fuck me what a costly error. They then said I would have it back at 4 pm. Excellent. No way. Fuckers just lied. Friday night and I hear I won't get it. Now what. I go to the bus company and cancel my ticket to Diego and replace it for another to Tamatave on Wednesday because I have no idea how long it will be. To top it off there is a week long independence celebration on so many officials are on holiday. Monday afternoon and I got back to my hotel and was told I will have it back tomorrow morning. Well I finally got it after 1 PM thank fuck. It is a bit nerve wracking not knowing the outcome and not being able to go anywhere until you get it back.

It took 100 euro, 3 photos, a copy of my passport, a copy of my hotel registration, a copy of my flight ticket and a copy of my bank card (still don't know why that one) and all told 3 days but I suspect it could take anywhere up to a week if they drag it out. Not recommended!

As far as I know this is completely legit (except for the 100 euro part). They were real coppers and my airport visa was actually replaced with a new one signed and stamped for 4 days after I leave the country.

A couple other notes. I have learned that 3 days in Tana is plenty!

Don't go during "independence week" which is basically whatever week surrounds June 26. Tana crowds, noise, traffic and pollution at it's worst. And many places close according to a schedule that is random.

Anyway enjoying the relative peace and quiet in Tamatave for awhile. Rains plenty, as most already know but amazingly the last 2 days have been almost completely sunny.
