First, the naysayers. I do not understand. Maybe they are trying to keep you from visiting so you do not overpay and ruin the market. The best way to keep the prices down and the quality is to prevent newbies from coming and throwing around money like assholes. So, yes, it is really horrible in Ukraine!! Please stay home!

Second, there was a recent report of high numbers of girls over an entire month, with reasonable prices. If you know what you are doing, that will be your experience. In the past I attempted exchange back to USD, and it required local Ukrainian passport. My driver helped. Then I switched to spending leftover UAHs at duty free. Now I leave UAHs and even all USD+EUR cash with reliable driver. I know him for 4 years. He performs occasional transaction requests while I am away, sends out merchandise to me, etc. As I became more frugal, stopped ordering from GIA, and established a network of local regulars, I tend to leave more behind with every departure.

Did anybody establish a bank account, accessible from both Kiev and Italy or Germany or US? I know there are few international banks allowing that, but I never got a chance to follow through.

I also keep my SIM card for over 4 years with the same number, even when I am away for longer than 6 months, the typical period of time, when cellular carrier may sell the number to someone else. I can surely use Viber with my driver over Free WiFi at KBP, but I feel safer with having a working phone the moment aircraft touches the ground. If my cellular account gets depleted, I can contact driver over WiFi, and in Kiev he can transfer money from his bank account to my phone number while waiting for me.

Fluctuations do not concern me much, even though I have seen it going from 5 to 8 to 28 and now down to 25 UAH per USD. Price of commodities doesn't change radically in USD. If anything, quality of basic services improved and / or they became wider available.
