I made my first visit to La Zona in October 2004.

I found out about La Zona just one or two months earlier on the internet.

It was obvious to me that some Spanish was necessary, but not much Spanish was necessary. Before going to LZ I wrote down and memorized just a few Spanglish phrases. They were geared toward negotiating for sex sessions with street girls.

In all the major bars, the meseros pay the bar to work there. That is why there are 10 X more meseros than necessary. CC meseros are by far the most dishonest. You pay with pesos at HK / AB / TB and you have maybe a 5%-10% chance of getting short-changed. At CC the rate is literally 100%. Their posted exchange rate is 19:1 but the meseros charge you 20:1 and pocket the difference. They don't do it sometimes, or half the time, or most of the time. They do it every time.

If money is the primary factor then Chicago is the worst. But I have had HK waiters stare me down trying to intimidate me into another drink, asked if I wanted a boy instead, and Called me a faggot.

No wonder HK security searches guests so thoroughly for weapons. I would bet that a couple of irritated patrons have been pushed a little too far by waiters and came back to get even.

I have to disagree on knowing Spanish to finesse the girls.

Even as a newbie, I always got my point across. It most certainly helps to speak spanish but during that ficha, I never found the language a barrier. Touching my 2 fingers to my lips then hers, I waited for the kiss. See what happens. Lots of ways to communicate.

The more you are down there, the more natural the words begin to flow.

Now with google translate and other apps, the technical have become easier.

It really is a learning curve, a fun one.

In Canadian schools, French was required. Not much help down there.

After nearly 15 years of visiting la Zona, I maybe know about 200 to 300 words in Spanish. Not enough to be conversational in Spanish.

But honestly, Hong Kong really takes some finessing in order to get decent value. There's too much bullshit. Waiters, crappy girls, etc. You need to roll through a loooot of shit to find solid girls. There's a saying in Mexico: "El mariachi pagado toca mal son" = "The pre-paid musician plays badly".

It's a common enough saying that if the girl insists on getting paid in advance, you can just say "el mariachi pagado. " and she will likely get what you mean. Never pay in advance. The best you should ever do is show her that you have the money but put it back in your pocket or in an inconvenient place (not just on the dresser).

They would appreciate your caring gestures.

This is no end to greed. You have to set your limits with the girls. Make sure they understand you are not Jeff Bezos wooing Lauren Sanchez, or they would think you are an ATM machine and set goals for themselves to empty out your bank and investment accounts. 2 of my wingmen went dead broke being nice to the girls, buying them fichas all night, giving them loans of $200-300 for emergencies. One girl had 3 kids plus a husband in federal prison for drug charges. She did give him a few free sessions to make up.
