Yes just a personal record and yes I am over fifty.

It might indeed be unknown to the machine; your card company will convert. This is generally the best bet. Another idea is to buy some Euros, perhaps at your local bank, before you leave. Or travellers' cheques, but they are probably not worth the trouble. (The guaranteed-rate stuff is an attempt to get around the new law, which applies only when withdrawing local currency.
