Nope. If they do as well as Germany in limiting the rate of increase to 10%, they will reach 90% in 47 days time, and not in summer. Assuming they do worse and the increase is 15%, they will reach 90% by the beginning of May.

Current death rate in US is 2.7%, 8400+ dead of 310 K infected, as of this minute. The death rate is a bit of a lagging indicator. For example, even if not a single new person gets infected from now on, some out of the current 310 K infected will die, and hence the denominator stays constant but numerator will grow. We can only know what is the true death rate when this thing is completely behind us. Most experts think true death rate is between 0. 6% to 1%, and it is also quite clear that many infected people are never really counted because many of them are asymptotic and never tested.

I agree the low infection rates in poor countries mean nothing. There is no testing to speak of. I think in Italy there were many old people, and this virus is deadly for the old people. So that is one reason for Italy's high death rate. In all the regions badly impacted by Corona in Italy, there has been a huge spike in deaths in 2020 as compared to previous years. Only 1/3 of such deaths this year are being classified as Corona related. Many people are quietly dying at home, never got tested.

The other reason for high death rate May be that it was focused in one region. So, there was a large stress on healthcare system in that region and many infected people did not receive proper treatment. This happened in China too. Death rate in Wuhan was very high but outside Wuhan death rate was very low. Most of the infected people in Wuhan didn't receive proper treatment because the # cases exceeded local health system's capacity.

Even in US, death rate in NY is like 3.3%, higher than country's death rate. Part of the reason is that there are so many cases and putting stress on the care system. NYC has probably the very best healthcare in the world with Colombia Presbyterian, NYU, Weil Cornell, and so many other great hospitals with truly world class experts. But even the best expert can't care for so many cases at once and if sufficient number of ventilators and other equipment is not available.

I have no idea why death rate is high in France. Perhaps even over there, too many old people are dying? Havenot been following Corona issue in France, as most of our attention here has been on US, and then Italy and (Korea and China, to figure out lessons from their experience).
