Las Cucardas is the best known legal brothel in the Peruvian capital, founded more than half a century ago in Cercado de Lima and run since the 1990's by Víctor Hugo Shimabukuro Nakajima. This 55-year-old man of Japanese descent, branded several times as a mobster, now prefers to stay away from the press and lead a more 'discreet' life.

Victor Shimabukuro is talented with acoustic guitar and also with weapons. He confessed on camera to having shot to protect his life and defended his workers from lively boyfriends and other disrespectful individuals. You never travel without safety.

This property, with three floors, white walls and easy access, is located on a corner and is the same one that Victor reported as domicile in the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status. José, dressed in sandals, shorts and an open shirt, adds: "that is a screen", when consulting him about the foundation that his brother was going to create and his interest in Creole music.

Víctor is a man respected and feared by the prostitutes of Las Cucardas. For many of them, he is the person who gave them the opportunity to improve their economic stability; for others, a simple 'businessman'. Today 'Toño', a character with fair skin, black hair, slanted eyes and a thick build, takes command of the company that receives anonymous clients and figures from the public sphere.

"It's bullshit. Stay away from him. He is just like Victor Hugo ", said a prostitute under the pseudonym Nidia.

Nidia is 22 years old and did not come to Las Cucardas by chance. In 2013 she was already renting her body to exclusive clients.

In Peru practicing prostitution is not a crime, pimping is; that is, obtaining money through sexual exploitation, as Hugo Muller Solóand, colonel of the National Police of Peru (R) and criminal lawyer, comments in an article. Supposedly, Las Cucardas only rents the rooms and makes a profit from the bar.

Nidia's shift starts at four in the afternoon. She arrives at the place located in block 8 of the Ricardo Treneman shred, near Argentina Avenue and behind Las Malvinas (an informal market), enters and prepares for the customers that she will start serving from the next half hour.

Going through the door is a ritual and a forbidden daring for women, except for those who work there. Four security people monitor the entrance: one registers the taxis that leave the brothel, as it also offers the mobility service; two impose order in entry; and another checks customers with a metal detector.

Cell phones, suitcases and any large object are prohibited. At the reception, an old man with Japanese features keeps the devices and charges the entrance fee: 38 soles (approximately 12 USD) in cash or by card. The proof of payment goes out with the name of Rosa Hatsue Shimabukuro Shimabukuro S. A. see. Which has its fiscal address on Avenida Argentina, a branch and a warehouse on Avenida Guillermo Dansey, and the premises of Las Cucardas.

The entrance fee includes two complimentary drinks, a condom, and a control ticket. The goal: excite customers.

Las Cucardas is located in an area of ​8203;Lima with little security and desolate alleys. Private taxis abound in income, as do cigarette and gum vendors. The cold is not an impediment for them to work in the open until dawn. His clients are the same as the brothel: men well dressed and mostly in ties.

For those who prefer not to get into 'action' immediately, a well-stocked bar awaits them at the end of the entrance. There is no menu with prices, consumption is upon payment and there are no snacks. A personal beer costs 15 soles (4. 5 USD), more than double that of any store. Two waiters deliver the drinks. Paty is a former prostitute who agreed, from her native Ecuador, to talk about her stay in Las Cucardas. When she arrived in Lima, a taxi driver from the night club named Daniel helped her get her immigration card to work in Peru, without any kind of personal procedure. She worked under Victor Shimabukuro for three years, made money and walked away from the halls of the brothel. "I had a lot of problems and my life was in danger," he said. Today she is married and has a son.

Paty's life was not easy. Her economic situation forced her to migrate and take refuge in the first job she found in Lima. She attended 30 men on average every day, endured the indecency of many of them and the infatuation of others. She gave a percentage of her money to Las Cucardas for each service offered, something that Victor himself denied tirelessly.

"There are no cafes here (.) nor do we take 50% of their work," boasted Víctor Shimabukuro in an interview for Caretas magazine in 2009. The controversial character claimed at that time that he only rented the rooms for 100 soles. Today the story is different. Although the Las Cucardas administration does not take half of what prostitutes earn per client, it does receive 25% of that income in the end; that is, 20 soles.

In one shift, either day or night, each of the women serves 15 clients on average. The basic rate, which does not include unprotected sex or "special" requests, is 80 soles for 20 minutes.

In just one day, a prostitute like Nidia takes home 900 of the 1,200 soles she earned by pleasuring men; that is, 50 soles more than the monthly minimum wage of a Peruvian. Together, the 60 prostitutes generate 25.9 million soles (US $ 7.7 million) for sexual services in one year: 19.4 for them and 6. 4 for Las Cucardas.

Unlike the characteristic clandestine prostitution in the center of Lima and sometimes for sexual exploitation, in Las Cucardas each girl rents her body by her own decision, based on different circumstances. There are those who work for some years and others who have a life there.

In this swirl of clientele, 'Toño', who goes everywhere with her firearm, according to brothel workers, has a peculiar function: to collect the money paid by clients for sex.
