Gentlemen,

A buddy of mine from Sydney that frequents Dubai has landed himself in some shit during his last trip to Dubai. Actually it seems like he dodged a bullet but he is going out of his mind with paranoia and constantly bugging me with questions that I don't really have all the answers to, so I'm going to put them before you and explain as briefly as I can his predicament and my 2 cents on it, please do let me know your thoughts as I think this whole scenario could be beneficial for all punters in Dubai. Ok, here's the story, as briefly as I can remember from what he told me:

He was in Dubai and with his regular WG from Ukraine. They got into some stupid fight while in the hotel room. Apparently they are pretty tight and almost like a couple, so they got into an argument where my buddy didn't believe what the WG was telling him and he told her to leave, despite her pleas to listen to her. He insisted she get the fuck out and was ready to throw her out. The WG picked up an empty glass of champagne, smashed it and used one of the broken glasses to slash her wrist open! Can you believe that? She bled profusely and luckily my buddy was able to call an ambulance, take her to the hospital where she needed emergency surgery to repair her veins. It was a really bad cut apparently and she was there over night. The Ukrainian WG in question is apparently illegal in Dubai with no visa, and was using a fake Iqama of a Russian girl. She also had no insurance. Since my buddy took her to the hospital with the ambulance, he had to make an initial payment of 15,000 AED as a deposit for them to go through with the surgery, since she had no insurance. He said he was scared that she might die if the surgery didn't go through ASAP so he paid the amount using his credit card.

Long story short, the surgery was successful and the next day she was discharged. Now get this, the final bill the hospital put before him was a whopping 69,000 AED! After a lot of arguing and bickering, they asked him to pay another 10,000 AED and told him and her to come back 2 days later to discuss the remaining amount with the hospital higher authorities. So the WG was discharged and able to go home.

Positives: the hospital or the hotel did not call the police or involve them, they made up a story that it was a freak accident and I guess the hospital / hotel bought it, the WG got the surgery which went well and was discharged and able to go home. My buddy was also able to fly out of Dubai a couple of days later.

Now here's the question that's bugging him. Since he and the WG did not go back to the hospital after paying a total of 25,000 AED, is there anything the hospital can do against him? Note, the hospital does not have my buddy's name or his ID. They may have his mobile number but he said he managed to put the WG's mobile name in their system before she got discharged. The WG in question as I mentioned is using a fake Russian Emirates ID (She is actually Ukranian) so they do not have her real name or ID either, just a mobile number. The WG also apparently has now left Dubai and flown back to Ukraine.

Does my buddy have anything to worry about? They don't have his ID, he was a tourist in Dubai, and even if they did, what could they possibly do? He isn't the one who got the surgery in the first place. That's what I keep telling him, but I do not know the laws etc in DXB / UAE and hence why I told him that look, I'll put your situation and questions before this forum and see what the guys say and get back to you.

My personal opinion is that he should be fine. He is worried about whether it's safe for him to travel to Dubai again, blah blah. He did not sign anything for the hospital about the remaining amount, they let the WG get discharged after getting the 25,000 AED payment.

Sorry for the long post. This just shows the risks of punting in Dubai. If the hospital or the hotel had called the police, for sure they'd both be in jail since they'd treat the case as a suicide attempt or some shit, plus it's illegal for an unmarried couple to be in the same room in Dubai. Plus, she could have died as her cut was very deep and then he'd be in jail for god knows how long. So punting in Dubai carries significant risks if things go wrong, like they did for my mate.
