Yep, Lima's probably the cheapest and most diverse culinary mecca in the world. It's a shame people only treat it as a stepping stone to Machu Picchu (which I'd nominate for the worst food in Latin America).

The food in the culinary mecca is twice the price of food in Brazil right now, all things equal. As I pay restaurants by credit card I only need to look at my credit card reports. All amounts are roughly double compared to what I was spending in Sao Paulo. Real restaurants still functioning, as opposed to fast food outlets, are thin on the ground. Also, Sao Paulo supermarkets put puny Vivanda & co in the shade in terms of quality and quantity.

Sao Paulo hotels had reduced "Covid" breakfasts but in Lima breakfast have undergone a further reduction. Scrambled eggs without cheese or ham, coffee without optional milk, butter only no jam for your bread. Reminds me of the scrimpy breakfasts they served in African hotels pre-Covid.

I can confirm the betting shops and casinos are up and running in Lima. It seems to be the last kind of business they want to restrict here.

Also I think if you stay in Mira Flores then you are also in the safest place in Latin America.

It is called the Corner Bar. It is on Larco close to the ocean in Mira Flores. It has two parts. The bar in front has the sports book and the building behind it has the horse betting room. The horse room is great. They give you free copy's of the racing form { racing forms cost $12 in the US } and if they see you betting half decent some food is free. Very friendly girls who work there { not hookers }. They use American money for betting.

Totally agree, the food is unreal at least compared to the rest of South America. I have heard that Sao Paulo / Rio is good too but I haven't been yet. I also stayed for a bit at the JW Marriott in Miraflores and it was the nicest hotel I've been to in South America, and cheap too like 130 a night. What sports books do you like in Lima? Any idea if they are open right now? I have a ticket to Lima in a few weeks, still not sure if I want to make the trip.

I love table gaming in Lima. Quiet tables (play BJ for hours 1 v 1 on a $5 table), lowest limit craps I've seen, and you can always get a slot at the table (every table is $5 or less. The S/5 tables make it like a $2 min bet so 32 across costs like $10-15 LOL). No hassling for tips.

There was nothing 3 star about Maria Luisa. I stayed at that place one time. There was so much dust and allergens in that place that it did fuck with my asthma. I have never had a problem in Bogota.

Almost 16 years of going to Santa Fe and I have never been a victim of anything. And the only thing I have seen happen is a ladyboy trying to pickpocket another board member when he was drunk as a skunk. I pulled him to safety though and told him it was time to get out of there. And it was about 4am at the time.

I have met up with board members of several races and nationalities in Santa Fe. None of them were shaking in their boots. It is a neighborhood with streets and establishments and people about. It is not Mad Max and anarchy.

Cost of a room at one of three Doubletree hotels in Bogota hotels in Bogota ranges from $52 to $55 a night on hotels.com. Cost of one night in Lima Doubletree is $108 on hotels.com. It is $109 a night in Santiago. In Mexico City $80 and in Sao Paulo it is $65. Everyone of those locations save for Santiago has better looking women.

I really do not even know why you guys are arguing this point. Maybe once Peru devalues its currency again, it will be a bargain, but it sure as hell is not now.

For me. Pretty much.

Lodging, I'd never look at something high end as Doubletree. When I started going to Lima, it was staying at 3 stars like Maria Luisa when it was S / 70 a night and always kept my accomodation costs under $40 a night.

Flights, it's all the same to me, I fly into Santiago/BA from Australia.

The main thing that scares me about Colombia (and what I like about Peru. And Ecuador when I finally get there) is that there is a safe environment where you can have cheap sex. I am scared shitless about going to Santa Fe in Bogota or Centro in Medellin, having to negotiate with a woman on the street and follow her to a dodgy hotel. However I feel very safe going to 90% of chongos in Peru and having sex on the premises, something I've done hundreds of times.

If someone can suggest a safe way to do it in Medellin, I'm all ears, but I'm too weary reading stories of being drugged, boyfriends walking in and blackmailing/threatening violence, holes / doors in the wall where people can steal your items, etc. All this stuff does NOT happen in a chongo in Peru, but does happen when dealing with street girls anywhere in the world (same stories around SW in Tijuana etc).

In this Doubletree dump, you're not even allowed to open the entrance door to the hotel yourself. Peru had good and cheap mongering available when El Trocadero and Las Cucardas were open. Lima was in no way a poor mongering destination like Santiago.
