A few years ago the mechanic at a shop in centro Medellin did all my sound system on my car and some other electrical add-ons, he worked at the shop, and he is a really cool costeno about 40 yo and for hours as he worked on my car we talked and I never laughed so much with him when he tells me about his life growing up as a young kid in the coast areas.

He still has fond memories of his favorite donkey 25 years later, he was serious, they come to have such an affection and emotional tie with their "first love" no different than us gringos thinking back of our high school sweetheart whom we lost our virginity to back in our teens.

This year right before the China virus I needed to replace my light bar on my car so went back to this shop, as soon as I pull into the shop I see my costeno friend and we both start laughing. He promised to share 30 yo photos with me of his favorite donkey from back in the day.

You can't make this stuff up.

I rented an apartment near the clock tower and made sure they allowed visitors. I only asked about visitors and did not specify hookers. After confirmation I read the house rules, different than website, that they do not allow sex workers or "friends", as they put it. Do you think the warning is generic and does the government really have a law against it? I am wondering if that is the case and try my luck bringing in a woman. I also considered bribing the security people during my stay. What would be an appropriate bribe? Do you think I should do that?

This is the way I roll nowadays. The majority of these punks know only threats and dominance to get them to back off, they have no respect for anyone other than when someone likes me puts them into their place, you all can take the 'oh I just tell them no gracias and they will understand my kind gesture' but this is bull shit, these are punks who you all have been allowing them to grow in their aggressive and unrestrained behaviors.

Like I said these lazy ass costenos are the typical 5'-4" and 135 lbs mama boys who prey on the weak and timid, don't play into this, stand your ground, be firm with them otherwise they think they can continue to be overly aggressive and intimidating to any gringo or gringa.

And yes they typically work in a group of 2 or 3 but the others are just as puny and scared when they "get it" that you don't put up with their shit.

I got some Mexican friends back in my day from East LA and these guys you don't dare fuck with but they, right or wrong, earned their respect but not these costeno sad fucks that roam the beaches and streets of Cartagena.

To each his own my brother, but I have managed to go 25 plus years without anyhting other than minor hassles here in Asia simply because I have a smile on my face to everyone.

Conversely, I have seen many furriners take a nice beat down in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. And unless the ATM is opened wide, guess who goes away in cuffs in the bed of a pickup truck. And hope that the cops have even gotten there in time. And they really don't have to concept of machismo as we understand it.

So its a lot easier to smile and be happy. Its their country, their people, their rules. You are a guest. The cost of your airfare can feed one of the bottom feeders for a year, if you can't deal with the fact that in these countries, you are seen as a walking ATM, you shouldn't be there.

Is Hollywood Beach open? Any action there? Would to have a beach bunny at least once while there. Also, what kind of prices should I be looking at. I am not one to negotiate so it would be nice to know if I am paying too much.

Not many people on the beach. Still quite hot during the day and may be more comfortable and slightly cooler with breezes in January and February. Maybe more people after the virus scare is over. Last weekend I had 2 girls come up to me in Laguito, conversate and offer me their phone numbers. They were asking 200,000 pesos for their company. Both were doable, but 8's and not 9's. One (Victoria) had a herpes blister on her lip, I asked her about that and she said she had a fever a few days before- no thanks.

I'll be in Cartagena on January 11th for a birthday week trip. Been trying to get there for forever LOL. Super excited. Been doing a little Tinder thumping and met a few to save some time in the beginning. Just curious, Are the Hilton / Hyatt hotels girl friendly? I don't recommend ever getting into a confrontation with any Colombian in Colombia. I usually say "no gracias" a few times and they leave me alone. Also if you don't make eye contact it discourages them. No reason at all to get anywhere near physical. I've seen locals surround a tourist while one of them takes out his frustration. It always looked scary.

Cartagena touts are a very special breed, but even they will leave you alone eventually. One "no gracia" and keep walking.

Yes I have come to detest those aggressive guys with the "Mister or Hello Sir or My Friend", they are usually costeno jack asses who if you don't set them straight right away will walk and pester you for 3 blocks.

My rule with these punks after 2 of my polite but firm "No Thank you amigo" is to say "Fuck Off you maricon, get the fuck away from me you costeno piss ass", it works. And should they come back with something I will get right into their sorry brown ass lazy costeno face and threaten them, these guys stand about 5'-4" and weigh in at about 130 lbs and size matters especially in Colombia.

For many of them this is the only thing that will keep them in check and just maybe they will not harass the next gringo that they encounter.

Tallman, you've been around this hobby for a while so I know your an experienced traveler. But even a 5 foot nothing can pull a Triger. I've travel thru out Latin America for years and I have never seen it so dangerous as it is today. My MO is to say nothing and just wave my finger back and forth in a no thanks fashion, that way they never hear my gringo accent and it has worked beautifully for me. From the pain in ass vendors in Copa as it does with the Venezolano beggars on the streets of Bogota. Us stand up guys always feel like we need to teach these punks a lesson but most of these outcomes will be bad. I remember coming out of Help a few years ago at 5 or 6 AM and a drunk Russian asshole decided to bad mouth a gringo coming down the steps toward TA. The gringo could handle himself and clocked this guy and he feel down the steps unconscious. The cops came and if you know the Rio cops, they just took him to jail, no questions asked. Long story short, he spend 3 of his 7 day vacation in a Rio jail so what did he prove. When I'm traveling, I try to avoid any confrontation, I know I can handle myself, so I don't need to prove I'm a stand up guy to anyone in another country. Life is cheap in Colombia, you can get somebody dumped for less than 300 k cop. So best is to avoid it all. Peace brother.

Amigo, there is no curfew in Cartagena for tomorrow, bar and clubs are open until new notice from 05 am to 01 am, events in public places are prohibited.

I had a great time in Cartagena. Colombian families are not in Cartagena because of the virus, they are staying home completely. About 20% of the number of people that normally come for the Christmas season. Streets are vacant except for the taxi drivers and annoying street vendors.

Many girls at the clock tower. Some are 8 and 9's. Many are hardened, experienced pros. Also there are many Colombian men around the clock tower trying to intervene and collect a fee for introducing you to a woman-they are interloper pests and will try to get money from you for introductions, if you let them- avoid them. "My friend" is usually what they say or "What do you want, my friend. " "No moleste" is a good phrase to repeat and they will counter with "its my job", or "this is not your country" and then leave you alone. Most of these aggressive men come by launch from the island of Baru and are trying to sell something during the daytime and are pests. They are low lifes but you are a rich man if you can afford an airplane ticket there and look like a gringo, and their job is to get easy money from a stupid tourist..

I had a short experience with one of these assholes in the clock tower area. Someone needs to remind them that pimping is illegal in Colombia the last time I checked. I do not know how to say "pimping" in Spanish. I told this one asshole this is English and then with my limited Spanish I insinuated by asking "quieres hablamos con policia"? He got the message and stormed away. Assholes!
