Well I wouldn't go that far. Westerners should save money but 70% live paycheck to paycheck, those who work at least. Social security and other such benefits are there for westerners, there's nothing for the elderly in third world countries. Only a small percentage of westerns could live solely on their savings. I can understand the reason for a large family, there's always someone with a little bit of money who can help feed the family. One reason why so many Filipinos come to the states and work ten years and then head home, this gives them social security benefits which will go much further in their country.
