I'm with you on the flights. Once you've experienced first and business class travel it's really, really hard to go back to economy / coach. At this point in my life, when it comes to leisure travel by air, I will be sticking with at least premium class seats. Economy / coach or "cattle cabin" class is simply too uncomfortable. No more landing with a sore neck! As for hotel rooms, I tend to stick with 3-star to 4-star hotels. You can find some of those near the hauptbanhofs in the big cities, which is where I prefer to stay in Germany since I take the train a lot, and it's easy to find a taxi too if you need one. Although, I have Uber and Lyft, and will be seeking to utilize those services more often.

A $4000 ticket now at this point in my life is worth $12-20 K by the time I reach average retirement age. That's $4000 gone in 8 hours that will cost me 3-5 x that 20-25 years from now.

That being said, I can't wait for the life occasion that warrants the purchase of a transpacific first class ticket with a flat bed in a semi-private cubicle.

Returning to subject of long-haul travel. Back in 2018, low cost carriers like WOW Air, LEVEL and Norwegian Air were offering dirt cheap flights to Americans wishing to cross the Atlantic. This forced traditional carriers like United and Delta to lower their pricing to remain competitive. So a lot may depend on if these budget airlines can stay financially afloat. And if Norwegian Air collapses like WOW Air did in 2019, will other low cost carriers emerge to replace them? From a regulatory standpoint, I am not sure what the barrier to entry is like. Governments could choose to lower the taxes and bureaucratic red tape. Governments still own and operate some of the world's major airports, so in theory NYC could lower the fees they charge to airlines that land in JFK.

I've taken 8 legs of domestic flights during this past year and have paid the lowest prices I've ever paid (except in college with the $49 one-way standby transcontinental tickets offered by AirTran).

The 6 times I flew with Delta, I was upgraded every time. One flight carried a total of 12 people. Took 2 legs of a 1 hour flight with Spirit Airlines (The cheapest carrier in the USA). The round trip ticket to Tampa, FL and back was $36.

I don't think anyone ever likes these intercon-trips (especially the east bound) but having sampled the goods up at the front it's even harder. The same goes for the hotels too. These 2-star hotels near the Hauptbahnhof are impossible to stay at these days and don't get me started on older 2-3 star hotels in the US. I don't need 5 star but the level of what's acceptable is obviously higher these days.

That means that even when I'm travelling for pleasure I try to find a way to move myself up one class.

I mean, I'm not against the luxuries in life, not at all. Everyone must judge for themselves how to get the most joy for your money. I'm sure my pre-pandemic $30 thousand plus holiday budget is sinful even for the average upper middle class person.

For me, it's just that the airline first class price points are absurd to me. I have never ever ever ever ever paid for a full priced first class ticket, or business class for the matter. My status with Delta does allow for routine upgrades to business class on domestic flights and to economy comfort+ on international travel (over 50% occurrence, probably 75%.

While I do enjoy the perks, if I was forced to actually shell out the cash at the going rates, would I? Nope (except for the few times when I was offered a heavily discounted upgrade offer.) Take a look at prices for transcontinental business class prices in the United States. An economy ticket from east coast to west coast is somewhere around $400. A business class ticket costs around $2000. That's an extra $1600 for a four to five hour flight, $400 per hour for extra leg space, comfy seats, and not having to deal with loud children and passengers with poor airplane etiquette. That's just too rich of a luxury expense for me to reason, as frankly, I judge the value of service purchases based on my personal working rate, and I am well shy of being a $400/ HR earner.

For transatlantic travel (for me to get to an FKK), the economy prices are $800 compared to $4000 business and over $7000 for first class.

This is another way I look at it, for the price difference of a business class ticket, I can have 64 Cheap Charlie half-hour FKK rooms, or 32 half hour CIM rooms, or 32 hours of a continuous blowjob. As a value travel shopper, I fear that your assessment may be correct. Without airlines benefiting from high-profit margin tickets, the cost might just be transferred to economy class ticket purchasers.

I do hold out hope due to one phenomenon. The median income of my peer group is somewhere in the low 6 figure range. That's a fairly high number although hardly wealthy. That being said, for personal travel, most of them rarely purchase first class or business class tickets for long haul flights. Even my $200 K+ earner friends rarely purchase those tickets. The ones who do fly business and first class are usually a special group. They are the weekly business travelers in consulting and perhaps sales. Due to their frequency of travel on company dime, they manage to achieve platinum / diamond airline status meanwhile accumulating up to millions of frequent flyer / reward miles / points. Because of this, their seats are frequently upgraded while traveling for business and when "purchasing" a ticket for personal use, they just use their rewards points / miles to be upgraded to business and first class.

I suspect that a large chunk of business and first class travelers are upgrades and rewards users. If this is true, then perhaps the loss of business class revenue may not be as great as it may appear on the surface.
